A COLLEGE THAT IS GOOD FOR UNDER GRADUATION
The college has a vast infrastructure and brand image. But, education is extremely costly as compared to the quality of student output.
I got admitted in this college through Tamil Nadu common entrance test. And, I had three reasons to join the college. 1. Cost of tuition fee, it was 25k per annum in 2009 2. The college is part of SRM campus. 3. The college is located in Chennai suburb.
FEE STRUCTURE AND FACILITIES
The fee varies based on the admission type. There will be 5X difference between management and counselling admissions. I completed my course with a tuition fee of 50k. wherein, for the same course my friends spent 2.6L since they are inducted through management quota.
Since I did MBA in this college, I can comment only about MBA program. But, as compared to MBA, engineering placements are better. MBA campus placements are poorly organized in this institution. Out of 57 students in our, batch only 2 got placed through campus interview, that too in BPO's. The average salary per month will be around 18k.
I was placed in the college through TANCET exam, and the admission process doesn't involve any interview process, students were admitted to the college only based on the mark they score in TANCET. I scored 37.4 which was around 400th rank among 40,000 students who had appeared in it.
Hostel and mess are common for both SRM and Valliammai, so the quality of food and hostel facilities were excellent. Free wifi was available during 2009. And students grievance in regards to safety, health, and food were swiftly addressed by the management.
We have an alumni network and we gather on and off. But, we are associated purely based on our own kinship. We are no way connected to the college management.
As compared to the faculties in the government college in Chennai and faculties of private colleges in other metros, the knowledge level of the staffs is not so appealing. The problem with the quality of staffs could be because of the low salaries, the average experience of the faculties will be less than 10 years and ratio of faculties with PhD to non-PhD faculties would be 20:100.
The college is like a mini-metropolitan, you could see students from all states and countries. Gender ratio would be 30:70 F:M, relationship between the students is very cordial. Sexual orientation is very healthy. Almost all students studying in the college are from upper middle-class family as they alone can afford the cost of education. In terms of debates and political events, the college/students must improve a lot.
Exams are conducted in semester pattern during our stint. Since that we are not engineering graduates, we didn't have much of practical classes, except computer practical session. Industrial visits were arranged once in a year. And, guest lectures will be arranged once in a quarter. However, we were allowed to attend guest lectures arranged by SMR university as both the institutes (Valliammai & SRM) are located within the same campus.
COURSE CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
The course curriculum is set by Anna University which is set based on the needs of the local job market, the course and papers are designed by experts such that it even meets international standards. But, the papers are theoretical. A classical example is ERP paper in systems group.
No, the college doesn't provide internship. Students have to find out options on their own. However, there are faculties who arrange for internship program through their own network.
There’s no annual cultural events specific to Valliammai, the events are organized collectively between SRM & Valliammai. Events will be arranged in grand manner. During management meets, professors from foreign universities will be brought for guest lectures.
LOAN/ SCHOLARSHIP PROVISIONS
No scholarship facilities were arranged by the college management. But, the college founder gives free admission to the students from his village. At least, 25 students will be admitted in an academic year under this system.
