IIT BHU, Varanasi
ONE OF BEST AND OLDEST IIT
1)Best in terms of placement in 2015 and 2016. In 2017 on day 1 of final placements, the highest package offered was 1.39 crore by Microsoft. 2)Established in 1919, it has the largest and very supportive alumni network among all IITs. 3)All departments are well established. 4)It has almost all types of machines in the mechanical department.
FEE STRUCTURE AND FACILITIES
From this year onwards the “annual” fee for undergraduate courses at IITs has been hiked from Rs90,000 to Rs2 lakh(tuition fees) from the upcoming academic session, sources in Human Resource Development ministry said today. There would also be a full fee waiver for SC/ST, differently abled students and those whose annual family income is less than Rs1 lakh. Also, two-thirds of the annual tuition fee would be waived for students with annual family income up to Rs5 lakh. The remaining students would be provided for easy loans.
faculty, again with the exception of few, is bordering on the line between average and below average. Many professors are incompetent when compared to that of sister IITs. Hence, the teaching, in general, is poor. The majority of the professors are downright arrogant and instead of delivering quality education they like to believe that they have a bunch of idiotic, drunkard and irresponsible students to teach to.
Thus my rating would be 3.5 / 5.0. I have tried to judge on the basis of general observation, as far as possible. Exceptions are and will always be there. Do add any point which I may have overlooked.
Sports facilities - All kinds of sports facilities are available including basketball, tennis, swimming, etc. Other plus points - You can have your own bike or scooter on the campus which is not allowed in any other IIT. You can do an additional course on finance or learn a foreign language from the departments in BHU. Which is once again unique to IIT BHU. We also have a large, beautiful and very famous Vishwanath temple inside our campus.
COURSE CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) MAIN will be conducted by the NTA from 2019 onwards. This Examination was being conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) until 2018. JEE Main is applicable for admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs participating though Central Seat Allocation Board subject to the condition that the candidate should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST candidates the qualifying marks would be 65% in the 12th class examination.
Many festivals like Technex(Techno-management fest) | Spardha (One of the biggest Sports fest in India) | Kashiyatra (Cultural Fest) are hosted by IIT BHU. It has various councils ranging from social, cultural, film and media, sports to science and technology. Each council has a number of clubs that have their own specialization. For eg, the astronomy club has such types of equipment which are even missing in old IITs. The clubs are the best place to be if you want to do something other than academics.
LOAN/ SCHOLARSHIP PROVISIONS
Following scholarships are available on the basis of merit(Assuming you are a trying for a scholarship purely on the basis of merit) : The scholarship test happens only for the respective toppers of certain branches and the institute rank holders in selected institutes throughout India. You can visit the above link for the scholarship amount (Amount INR 65000 for engineers during my time)and the selection criterion. In IIT (BHU), there is a Tata Steel scholarship, amounting to INR 25000, given to the person who is among the top 5 toppers of the Institute. This was before the conversion of IT to IIT. I am not aware of this scholarship is still there. Many of my friends got a scholarship amounting to INR 36000 based on their AIEEE ranks/board percentages from CBSE. You can check out this. I guess they have reduced the per year amount now.(Citation needed)
