JGU: A Place to Learn, Lead, and Succeed

I feel that through this program, i can happily explore my imagination and ideas. Curriculam wise, the first year is entirely devoted to basics such as audio visual storytelling, history of films, and traditional narrative forms. From the third semester onwards, i get to choose a major specialization like Direction and Screenplay, Cinematography, Sound Design, or Editing. The classes beautifully blend technical filmmaking with liberal arts traditions, and i spend my time making actual short fiction films and taking unique cross listed electives across the university.

To earn my degree, i have to complete four mandatory internships totaling 14 non academic credits. Thankfully, the university connects us with major media houses, PR firms, and social sector NGOs. I have already seen my seniors intern and land actual jobs at major networks like NewsX, India Today TV, and PTI. Getting this kind of real world experience will let me build a solid portfolio and connect with industry pros way before graduation.

At JGU, the Office of Career Services puts a lot of effort into preparing us for the competitive industry in digital media, podcasts, investigative reporting, multimedia storytelling, and data journalism. We have an exceptional alumni network with students who have graduated from our college and become political reports at The Hindu or media consultants for the UAE-India council, or even bagged the role of anchors at NewX and ET TV. The intense training that we get makes us ready for the industry. The institution helps us a great deal in shaping our resumes.

Instead of worrying about hidden monthly costs, you pay a fixed annual amount that takes care of everything. What really helped me was their merit cum means scholarship program. They offer fee waivers if your family income is their cap and you have scored well on your boards or entrance exams.

I absolutely enjoy being such a huge campus. The whole campus is air conditioned, and it helps a lot during hot summers. Being a student of film, i get to work in state of the art editing suites and sound studios for long periods of time. However, when i want to take a break, i go the main library since it opens till late and provides a very calm environment. There is always some event going on somewhere on the campus grounds in the form of film shows or music festivals.

I gained admission to this film course through an all round admission process, and this was a great relief because they were not just considering my boards marks. I started by submitting a personal statement of my interest in media, and passed the aptitude test conducted by the university with above fifty percent. This was followed by a short written test on the spot and an informal interview by the lectures. They cared more about how creative i was than just my bookish learning.

I am deeply inspired by the professors who teach us in the media school. They are not just traditional teachers reading from textbooks; many of them are active independent filmmakers, sound designers, and national award winning editors. I love that the class sizes are small because it allows me to get direct, one on one feedback on my scripts and rough video edits. The faculty members are quite accessible, and i can always visit them in their offices during off hours.

The nightlife here is quite dynamic too. As all students reside within the compound, it ensures that there is never a dull moment after midnight either. My friends and i often take the time to eat at the late night restaurents or truck shops during the nighttime study sessions. While shooting our films, my team always ends up filming outdoors in and around the illuminated buildings. The nightlife is completely safe with 24/7 security.
