Singapore Student Visa: Types, Document Required, Cost, Application Process, and Study Work Visa

Singapore student visa really means the Student's Pass, sponsored through your university on the SOLAR+ portal. Budget about SGD 45 to apply and SGD 60 at issuance. Processing runs 2 to 6 weeks. It is one of the cheapest and fastest student visas anywhere. Recent guidance flags one silent change: the processing fee now shows as SGD 45 on current schedules. Many older guides still print SGD 30. Getting the sequence right protects your course start date and your deposit.

• Tourist entry cannot convert to a Student's Pass later.

Singapore Student Visa Types Explained

Three situations exist, and only one needs the full Student's Pass. Full-time students at approved institutions need it. Short courses and some pass holders do not.

The types:

• Student's Pass: the main visa for full-time degree and diploma students at approved institutions. It covers NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD, SIT, SUSS and registered private schools.
• Short-course route: standalone courses finishing within 30 days can run on a visit pass. No practical training is allowed on this route.
• Existing pass holders: Long-Term Visit Pass holders can study without a separate Student's Pass.

Two documents confuse everyone. The IPA letter (In-Principle Approval) is the approval that lets you travel. The pass itself is issued digitally after arrival formalities, through the FileSG site or Singpass app.

Documents Required for the Student's Pass

The file is short but strict: passport, photo, offer letter, the Form 16 application and attested academic records. Funds evidence follows your university's checklist.

The document set:

• Passport bio-data page, valid well beyond the course.
• Recent digital photograph to the stated specification.
• Offer of admission from the approved institution.
• Completed eForm 16 on the SOLAR+ portal.
• Academic records: CBSE and State Board marksheets need attestation before upload.
• Funds evidence: commonly first-year tuition plus SGD 8,000 to 10,500 for living, around INR 5.9 to 7.8 lakh.
• Medical: an examination of about SGD 50 to 100, per your checklist.

What the visa file covers and does not:

• Covers: identity, admission and the immigration form itself.
• Does not: IELTS. The pass has no English test. Your university's offer already settled that.

Two timing notes protect the file. Attestation for board marksheets takes its own days, so start it before the offer arrives. And dependants cannot ride on a Student's Pass, so family members need their own visit arrangements.

Cost and the SOLAR+ Application Process

The all-in visa cost lands near SGD 185 to 215. Australia charges AUD 2,500 and the UK over GBP 1,300 for the same door. The process runs in six steps.

The sequence:

• Step 1: accept the offer and pay the deposit. Your institution registers you on SOLAR+.
• Step 2: complete eForm 16, upload documents, and pay the SGD 45 processing fee.
• Step 3: file within 2 weeks of the offer. July and August are peak processing months.
• Step 4: receive the IPA letter, typically in 2 to 6 weeks.
• Step 5: travel on the IPA. You enter on a 30-day visit pass.
• Step 6: finish ICA formalities, pay SGD 60 for issuance plus SGD 30 for the Multiple Journey Visa. The digital pass follows.

If your application sits beyond 8 weeks, then do not write to ICA yourself. That means asking your institution's international office to raise the inquiry through SOLAR+.

Note: An expired IPA is the expensive mistake. A resubmission restarts the full processing clock and can push you past orientation. Book travel within about 2 weeks of the IPA arriving.

Rules While Studying and the Work Visa After

During the course, approved-institution students may work 16 hours a week in term and full-time in vacations. After the course, Singapore now offers a real job-hunt window.

The rules and the after:

• Work in term: 16 hours a week at approved institutions, including the public universities. Many private-school students have no work rights.
• The job-hunt pass: graduates of eligible universities can apply for a Long-Term Visit Pass of up to 1 year. File within 2 months of the degree.
• The work passes: the S Pass floor is SGD 3,300 a month in 2026, rising to SGD 3,600 from 2027. The Employment Pass starts at SGD 5,600, higher in finance.
• The bond route: Tuition Grant holders already owe 3 years to a Singapore employer, which doubles as a placement plan.
• Longer term: Employment Pass holders can later pursue Permanent Residence.

If your budget assumes part-time income, then confirm your institution's work-rights status first. That means checking before accepting the offer, not after landing.
