Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, known as TIFR is a reward of commitment and dedication. The founder of the TIFR is HOMI J BHABA who has a great contribution in developing the Indian Atomic Energy Program. The University has established on 1st June 1945 by huge financial assistance of J.R.D Tata, then chairman of Tata Group. It is a national center of the Government of India. under the Department of Atomic energy, as well as a deemed university awarding degrees for masters and doctoral programs. 

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Key Points

  • The institute began its journey in the campus of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore but later it has been moved to Mumbai
  • In Colaba, TIFR has appeared with a new campus, designed by Chicago-based architect Helmuth Bratsch was launched by Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on January 15th, 1962
  • TIFR has achieved grade “A” by MHRD
  • TIFR has been marked as one of the best institutes in Asian top 100 institutions

TIFR Courses

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research is the institute for advanced research in fundamental sciences. TIFR runs a graduate programme leading to the award of Ph.D., integrated M.Sc. degree in certain subjects.

The Graduate programme at TIFR is classified into the following subjects- Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer & Systems Sciences, Mathematics (including Communications and Applied Probability) and Science Education. Following TIFR courses/programmes are conducted at the Mumbai campus and various National Centres of TIFR.

M.Sc./MS in Physics or equivalent, on completion of programmes of duration not less than 5 years in total

 

I-Ph.D.

ME/M.Tech/B.Sc./BS/BE/B.Tech/B.Chemistry Physics, or equivalent degree on completion of programmes of duration not less than 3 years in total.

Chemistry

Ph.D.

M.Sc/BE/B.Tech/ M.Pharm or equivalent degree

 

I-Ph.D.

B.Sc./ B.Pharm/ B.S degree or equivalent degree

Note: Candidates with BE/ B.tech. degrees can optionally opt. for M.Sc. degree by fulfilling necessary requirements.

Biology

Ph.D.

Masters in Basic Science (M.Sc. Physics/Chemistry/Any branch of biology) or any professional Master’s degree (M.Pharma/M.Tech.), or a 4-year degree program (eg. MBBS, BDS)

 

I-Ph.D.

Bachelors in any Basic Science (Physics/Chemistry/Any branch of Biology) or any 4-year bachelors degree program including B.Tech, B.E, B.V.Sc., B.Pharma. (4-year course).

Computer & Systems Sciences (including Communications and Applied Probability)

Ph.D.

Candidate must have B.Tech./ B.E./ M.Tech/M.E/M.C.A/M.Sc. or equivalent degree in Computer Science/ Electronics and Communications Engineering/ E.E or related branches. Exceptionally well qualified students with B.Tech./ B.E./ M.Tech/M.E/M.Sc. degrees in other disciplines may also be considered.

 

I-Ph.D.

Exceptionally well-qualified students with a three-year degree in related subjects may be considered for I-Ph.D.

Brilliant Contributions in the field of mathematics is known to the whole world from its inception, which has come from the school of Mathematics, TIFR. The memorable contribution from TIFR mathematics experts are:

  • C. S. Seshadri's work on projective modules over polynomial rings
  • M. S. Narasimhan's results in the theory of pseudo-differential operators

VSRP

 

The Visiting Students Research Program (VSRP) is organized per year in the summer season by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.

VSRP is imparted in the subjects Physics and Astronomy, Biology and Computer Science, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

There is a medical center for health needs of members. 

It provides good treatment to Institute member, official visitors, research fellow, VSRP students &research scholars.

Life in a research institute, a personal view of JRD and Bhabha's legacy, TIFR

Remarks -

Good points: Exceptional faculty and environment World-class research facility Modern coursework and brilliant exposure Stipend and zero fee Academic, cultural and social variety and a harmonious unity amidst all these diversities ZERO politics Bad points: Lack of accommodation space, and food All in all: 'Ao kabhi TIFR mein!' :) My conclusion: Its a privilege to be a part of this legacy.
