Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936. It is one of the premier institutes in India which offers education in the field of Social Science, Public Policy, Human Development, and Economics. The Institute, at its Mumbai campus, offers Postgraduate (MA) and Research (M.Phil-Ph.D.) courses.

TISS 2020 Quick Updates 

  • TISSBAT Registrations for admission in BA at Guwahati and Tuljapur Campus will start from December 1. 
  • Last Date to Register for MA programs at all campus is extended till November 30.
  • Last Date for M.Phil & Ph.D. Registrations is December 10.

TISS begins the admission process for Master’s programs at its Mumbai campus by the end of November each year. The admission process for Research programs begins in the month of January. The application process is online and a candidate can access the application form from the institute’s official website. The academic year usually starts by the end of May and beginning of June.

  • Admission to MA, M.Sc, MPH, LL.M, M.Li.Sc & MHA is offered on the basis of score in Tata Institute of Social Sciences National Entrance Test (TISSNET) followed by Pre-Interview Test (PIT) & Personal Interview (PI).
  • M.Phil-Ph.D. & Direct Ph.D. admission is based on the performance in Research Aptitude Test (RAT) followed by evaluation of Academics, Research Proposal & Work Experience.
  • Minimum eligibility for M.Phil-Ph.D. is a pass in Master’s degree in the relevant discipline while for Direct Ph.D. entry, Master’s degree along with t least five -year of work experience is mandatory.
  • TISS also offers BA in Social Work in off-campus mode. Students have to qualify in TISSBAT to secure admission to this program.
  • Application process for BA is completely online. For PG and M.Phil & Ph.D. courses, the application form can be filled online followed by online or offline submission.

TISS Mumbai M.Phil & Ph.D. Admission 2020

The institute offers Integrated M.Phil.-Ph.D. and Direct Ph.D. programs in various disciplines at its Tuljapur, Hyderabad & Guwahati campuses. Integrated M.Phil-Ph.D. is a full-time program. 

The application process for the research programs begins in the month of January. The entrance exam for research programs is conducted in the month of February. The admission will be offered on the basis of score in RAT followed by the performance in Academic Qualification, Work Experience & Research Proposal.

TISS M.Phil & Ph.D. Selection Criteria

  • RAT would comprise of two parts. The first part will have questions pertaining to quantitative or qualitative research while the second part will have program-specific questions. Based on performance in RAT, selected candidates will be called for a personal interview.
  • Final seat will be offered on the basis of candidates’ performance in Academics, Work Experience, Research Proposal & Statement of Purpose.
  • The candidates who will be selected in the final list are required to bring a hard copy of their duly filled application form, Fee Receipt, Degree & Caste/ Income Certificate for verification.

Key Points:

  • Submission of Research Proposal is the primary requirement to secure admission in these programs.
  • For M.Phil-Ph.D. in Disaster Studies, the candidates with Disaster Studies at PG level will be preferred at the time of admission.
  • GATE & JRF qualified candidates are also expected to appear in the Written Test & Interview conducted by TISS.

TISS offers MA, MPH, MHA, LL.M. M.Sc & M.Li.Sc courses in various specializations. There is a single entrance examination (TISSNET) for admission to all the PG courses offered under 12 schools of TISS. On the basis of marks scored in TISS NET, candidates are then called for a Written Test and Personal Interview. TISS BA (Hons.) Admission 2020

TISS, Mumbai also offers BA (Hons.) in Social Science at its Tuljapur, Guwahati & Hyderabad campuses. Tuljapur campus also offers BA (Hons.) in Social Work (Rural Development). Students have to qualify in TISS-BAT to secure admission.

TISS BA Application Process: Students can apply online for TISS BA through E-application process. Fill the application form and submit the application fee of INR 1025 (INR 275 for SC/ST/ OBC (NC)) by Credit/ Debit Card or through Net-Banking.  The application fee can also be paid in cash through Challan.

In case of fee submission through Challan, the students have to download the challan followed by submission at any branch of SBI. The bank will return two copies of challan, i.e, TISS Copy & Student Copy. The students have to scan the TISS copy of Challan, log in again to the Online Application System & Upload it.

TISS BA Selection Procedure: TISS BAT will consist 100 questions for the duration of 90 minutes. Part A will be of 60 minutes duration for 60 marks with MCQs related to Current Affairs, Logical Reasoning & General Awareness while Part B will be a Written Test (two descriptive questions) for the duration of 30 minutes for 40 marks. Final selection will be done by evaluating candidates’ performance in both Part A & Part B tests. TISS BAT is a computer-Based Test (CBT).

TISS Application Process 2020

The application form can be filled Online followed by offline or online submission by following the given steps:

  1. Visit the official website of TISS.
  2. Register online by clicking on ‘Apply Online’ button.
  3. Fill the form and pay the fee by Credit/ Debit Card or through Net-Banking.
  4. Application fee can also be paid through challan along with Bank Processing fee of INR 50 in any branch of State Bank of India.
  5. Submit the duly filled application form after uploading the desired documents.
  6. Hard copy of the application form can also be submitted through post along with required documents (attested by Principal of School/ Director of College or Gazetted Officer)
