Ans. No, BHU and IIT BHU are not the same institutes. Previously IIT BHU used to be a part of BHU and even after it became IIT, it still shares the same campus but IIT BHU is an autonomous institute. To go into detail, BHU stands for the Banaras Hindu University. Clearly, as the name suggests it's a University that comprises 6 institutes, 14 faculties(streams), and 140 departments. It has over 75 hostels for the resident students. The well-known institutes include Indian Institute of Technology(IIT BHU), Institute of Medical Sciences(IMS BHU), Institute of Agricultural Sciences(IAS BHU), Institute of Science(I.Sc. BHU), Institute of Management Studies(IMSt.-BHU) and Institute of Environmental and Sustainable Development(IESD BHU). The faculties are as diverse as Faculty of Law(FL-BHU), Faculty of Arts(FA-BHU), Faculty of Performing Arts(FPA-BHU) and Faculty of Commerce, etc. The departments are really diverse as well; the Department of Journalism, Department of Linguistics, Department of Mass Communication to name a few.  It is a well-known fact that there is no other university in the country that offers as many courses as the Banaras Hindu University does.  On the other hand, IIT BHU is the Engineering institute. It was formerly known as IT(Institute of Technology) BHU. It was designated the tag of an IIT in the year of 2012. The admission to IIT BHU is based on the JEE(Advanced). The institute has 11 Engineering departments, 3 dedicated Science departments, 3 Schools and a Humanities department. It offers courses across undergraduate and postgraduate streams. IIT(BHU) is known for offering very diverse UG and PG programs. For example, it is the only premier institute in the country to offer courses in Ceramics Engineering.Read more

Ans. There are not many discriminations in the facility between BHU and IIT BHU students as such. However, there might be a few things that would become observable in the coming years. That would be the infrastructural progress of the IIT’s campus, and that’ll purely be because the Govt. issues a separate fund to all the IITs and the University doesn’t come under that clause. Also, being an IIT, it has to show significant improvements facility-wise in order to remain an institute of that stature. For example, the indoor sports complex of the IIT campus will be a world-class facility for the sport-enthusiasts. Also, there are a couple of hostels under construction, and they’ll be facilitated with the latest technology, and that won’t be the case for any other hostel on the University campus.Read more

Ans. Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is a university that constitutes of several institutes. IIT BHU used to be one of them. Before 2012 IIT BHU was known as IT (Institute Of Technology) BHU, a engineering course that used to come under the administration of Banaras Hindu University (BHU). But in 2012 IT BHU was designated as an IIT and therefore is no longer a part of BHU. Both are now independent institutions. Now all decisions of IIT BHU are taken like any other IIT in the country. The admission procedures are also different for the two institutes. BHU conducts its own admission test. Whereas, admission in IIT BHU can be taken by JEE ( B.Tech) and GATE (M.Tech). The only thing that is common is that the campus of IIT BHU is inside BHU. There is no wall separating the two campuses. In fact, the Metallurgy department of IIT BHU is still using the buildings of the BHU campus. The building is named Swatantrata Bhavan where all the functions and programs are held and actually shared by both campuses.Read more
