Entrance Preview

I had to sit for a CET (Common Entrance Test) for this program. After completing my masters in arts, I wanted to pursue my higher studies in International Relations from Jadavpur University. I had chosen this program because it will help me in my future research work. In this CET, I scored 63 out of 100 and secured 5th rank in order to merit.

Admission

It is an easy process of application. I had applied online with all my details (including demand draft) and then received my admit. After 1 month sat for the CET and then result came out and got selected. Then the university asked for the counselling and interested students were present and smoothly got admission.

Ques. How is the faculty of IIEST’s CST department? Is it worth joining over Jadavpur’s IT or IIIT Allahabad/BITS Pilani’s ECE?

Ans. The IT courses at IIIT Allahabad are top-notch unlike CSE at BITS, Pilani’s. As CSE and IT are different courses and since you say that college doesn't matter to you it comes down to choosing between the subjects. IIEST Shibpur is doing great too in its infrastructure; placements and alumni base. The CST department has done great in the field of placements with 90% student placements in IIEST Shibpur. The highest was about 48 LPA from DirectI and the average package was around 8 LPA. Ans. Choosing the college depends upon personal preference. If you have any skill for either of the subjects, go for it irrespective of the institute. Both of the institutes are good and will provide you with tremendous opportunities. The table shows a brief overview of the institutions. Particulars JU IIEST Median Salary 19.96 lakhs 6.5 lakhs Highest Salary 58 lakhs 39 lakhs Fees Rs. 9,600 Rs. 5.36 lakhs However, if you don’t have a subject preference then here are few things that you should consider. Electronics as a specialization has got a booming market, which is demanded to create a lot of jobs presently. Ans. To decide which college is better than the other, here are some things that you should consider. These parameters include the following. Ranking: If you check the latest NIRF ranking, IIEST Shibpur ranks at 43rd position while Jadavpur University ranks in 12th position among the other institutes. Top University: Jadavpur University has got the tag of “University” but IIEST Shibpur does not have any tag as of now. Curriculum / Culture: Coming on to the important parameter, Jadavpur University has a very rich coding culture. This has helped in brushing up the skills of students up to a greater extent. Placements: Jadavpur University has a very strong placement cell and this is the reason for their outstanding placement stats year after year. On the other hand, IIEST Shibpur has an average placement stat. Accommodation Facilities: IIEST Shibpur provides you with better facilities. There are separate hostels for separate batches and from 3rd year onwards, you can choose a single room. At Jadavpur University you might need to compromise because all the batches get the same hostel. Ans. First of all, never compare Jadavpur University with NIT Durgapur for the Engineering stream. Second important thing is, people usually prefer B.Tech and M.Tech students over the one who has opted for Dual degree program. The reason for this is dual degree programs are not valuable in industry or research. Talking particularly about CSE, Jadavpur University is quite good and even better than the new IITs and most of the NITs. Among the given options, CSE at Jadavpur University is the best option to opt for. You will enjoy your studies here. You will have a good range of research projects. You will get abundant internship opportunities from here. Although placements at JU are not as great as compared to IITs, NITs, BITS, and IIITs.Read more

Ans. IIEST Shibpur offers integrated MTech for engineering streams. So, first, be clear if you want to pursue MTech from an institute that does not have a record of producing post-grads like IITs or other universities abroad. Comparison: In academics, there is not much difference between JU CS and BESU CS. In fact in the present scenario, JU CS has better placement statisticsas compared to BESU CS.For this reason, sometimes BESU CS/IT graduates join IITs after the completion of their course and often end up in the same firms their fellow JU mates are working in for 2 years. BESU got updated to the status of IIEST quite recently. It will take some time for the institute to improve its infrastructure and academics. Being an institute of national importance, the institute is attracting good facilities and campus recruits. The bottom line is if you are sure that you want to pursue integrated MTech, IIEST CS is not a bad option. Be it JU or BESU, the institute does not matter that much. Yes you can pursue this course from Jadavpur University as you are satisfying the eligibility criteria required for the course.

Eligibility criteria

• The candidates must have passed an Undergraduate or a Postgraduate degree in a relevant stream from a recognised institution.

• The candidate must have scored an overall aggregate of 50% (40% for SC/ST and 45% for PD) in the qualifying exam with all the subjects put together.
