The University of Calcutta, Kolkata is also known as Calcutta University is a public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal. It was established on 24 January 1857 by the Act of Legislative Council of British India. It is the first institution in South Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and western-style university. The University began functioning on the pattern of the University of London initially but eventually introduced its own modifications. The University still commands one of the top positions in the country providing quality education in UG, PG and Research Courses.
At present, the University is considered Asia’s largest University based on the strength of the students. The University was awarded 5 stars by NAAC in 2001 and in 2010 NAAC ranked the university as 'A’ grade in 2008, UGC declared Calcutta University as "University with Potential for Excellence".
There are 164 Colleges Affiliated to Calcutta University, which run graduation degree programs in various streams. Out of these 164 colleges, 19 are self-financed institutes. These colleges are situated across the city of Kolkata, Howrah, and South 24 Parganas. Currently, the university has more than 18,000 students enrolled at both graduate and post-graduate level through the various departments and affiliated colleges.

Calcutta University has a total of 14 campuses spread across the city of Kolkata. The University has a total of 8 faculties and 21 Centers through which it offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in a variety of disciplines in Arts, Commerce, Law, Education, Journalism & Library Science, Science, Social Welfare, Engineering and Technology, Fine Arts, Music, and Home Science.

The University of Calcutta conducts separate admission cycles for UG, PG and Research courses. The application process is majorly online, however, for certain research programs, it is offline too. The general cycle for admission to UG courses is in May every year.
The admission to most of the UG and PG courses is based on merit. For admission to UG Courses at Calcutta University, each affiliated college with the University of Calcutta releases its own cut-off score and candidates who have scored marks equal to or more than the cut-off score is granted admission. For admission to PG Courses at Calcutta University, the merit list is declared by the respective departments at the university. However, Calcutta University B.Tech. and M.Tech. admissions have different criteria from other courses.

For a majority of UG and PG courses, the admission is merit-based. However, for certain PG courses such as M.Sc., MCA, M.Sc. M.Ed. etc. the University conducts its own entrance exam.
Calcutta University grants admission to B.Tech program on the basis of marks scored in WBJEE Exam. For M.Tech, the university conducts its own entrance exam and also gives weightage to GATE scores of a candidate.
For admission to the MBA program, applicants should have a valid CAT/ MAT score. Similarly, for BA LLB, the University conducts a separate entrance exam. The admission to research courses is also through entrance exams which are conducted by the separate concerned departments of the University.
The university declares two types of results: Entrance exam results and University exam results.
The university conducts entrance exam for admission to various research courses. The result of an entrance exam for the research courses is declared by the concerned department and is made available on the official website as well.
The university exam results for UG courses are declared on the official website for West Bengal Results maintained by the National Informatics Center. The results for Honors, Major, and General Exams are declared separately. A student can access their result by visiting the official West Bengal Results website and entering their roll number.
The cell continuously coordinates with various industries and organizations for placement of the students. It has already successfully placed a number of students in Industry. It actively obtains feedback from organizations and conveys it to respective departments which, in turn, train students accordingly, thereby increasing their employability.
The University of Calcutta has a various number of Scholarship Programs being run under the curriculum of the university. It provides various types of scholarships for its students on merit and needs basis. Ans. A lot of students apply every year to the MBA programme for the available 33 seats. The placement rate is around 25% with a minimum CTC of 1.8 lakhs per annum. About 66% students are recruited off campus while 34% are recruited on campus. Out of this, 29% are placed through international on campus recruitment i.e. international brands recruit them, while 71% students are placed through Indian firms. The selection process includes: MCQ test and Interview. Though some companies can adopt other ways of recruitment such as Assignments or Group discussion. Before the entire process, Calcutta University organizes Industry- Academia Interaction program, under which students get exposed to the industry requirements. It helps in preparing for the entire placement process. Also, the University provides internship opportunities to the students before the placement process to give professional knowledge. The average gross salary of MBA from Calcutta University is around Rs. 4-5 lakhs per annum. It is quite a satisfactory package for a fresher. The median salary is about Rs. 8.3 lakhs. As compared to the B.Tech students, the MBA students receive less salary as the B.Tech students receive about Rs. 7-8 lakhs as the average gross salary.
