University of Calcutta, also known as Calcutta University is a public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal. It was established on 24 January 1857 by the Act of Legislative Council of the British India. It is the first institution in South Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and western style university. The University began functioning on the pattern of the University of London initially but eventually introduced its own modifications. The University still commands one of the top positions in a country providing education in UG, PG and Research Courses.
At present, the University is considered Asia’s largest University based on the strength of the students. The University was awarded 5 stars by NAAC in 2001 and in 2010 NAAC ranked the university as 'A grade' in 2008, UGC declared Calcutta University as "University with Potential for Excellence".
There are 168 Colleges Affiliated to Calcutta University, which run graduation degree programs in various streams. Out of these 168 colleges, 19 are self-financed institutes. These colleges are situated across the city of Kolkata, Howrah, and South 24 Parganas. Currently, the university has more than 18,000 students enrolled at both graduate and post-graduate level through the various departments and affiliated colleges.

Calcutta University Courses
Calcutta University has a total of 14 campuses spread across the city of Kolkata. The University has a total of 8 faculties and 22 Centers through which it offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in a variety of disciplines in Arts, Commerce, Law, Education, Journalism and Library Science, Science, Social Welfare, Engineering and Technology, Fine Arts, Music, and Home Science. Calcutta University Admission
The University of Calcutta conducts separate admission cycles for UG, PG and Research courses. The application process is majorly online, however, for certain research programs, it is offline too. The general cycle for admission to UG courses is in May every year.

The admission to most of the UG and PG courses is based on merit. For admission to UG Courses at Calcutta University, each affiliated college with the University of Calcutta releases its own cut-off score and candidates who have scored marks equal to or more than the cut-off score is granted admission. Calcutta University Entrance Exam
For a majority of UG and PG courses, the admission is merit-based. However, for certain PG courses such as M.Sc., MCA, M.Sc. M.Ed. etc. the University conducts its own entrance exam.
Calcutta University grants admission to B.Tech program on the basis of marks scored in WBJEE Exam. For M.Tech, the university conducts its own entrance exam and also gives weightage to GATE scores of a candidate.
For admission to MBA program, applicants should have a valid CAT/MAT score. Similarly, for BA LLB, the University conducts a separate entrance exam. The admission to research courses is also through entrance exams which are conducted by the separate departments of the University.
Calcutta University Results
The university declares two types of results: Entrance exam results and University exam results.
The university conducts entrance exam for admission to various research courses. The result of an entrance exam for the research courses is declared by the concerned department and is made available on the website as well.
The university exam results for UG courses are declared on the official website for West Bengal Results maintained by the National Informatics Center. The results for Honors, Major, and General Exams are declared separately. A student can access their result by visiting the official West Bengal Results website and entering their roll number.

Calcutta University Facilities
Library: The university started its first library in the 1870s. Now the university has 39 department libraries, central library, 2 campus libraries and 2 libraries advanced centres. University library has 10,00,000 books,20000+ bound journals etc.
The Library has a collection of more than 42,000 manuscripts including quite a few on palm leaves, including 20,000 in Sanskrit, 12,000 in Tibetan and Bengali and also several Persian and Arabic manuscriptsManuscript Library
Hostel: Calcutta University has 17 halls and hostels which accommodate a total of 2000 students. Out of these 17 halls and hostels, 8 are for female candidates and the rest are for male candidates.
