VISA & Work Study

As an international student at IU, it is most likely that students will have one of two types of nonimmigrant status: F-1 or J-1.

As a nonimmigrant student, students will face certain restrictions:

  • They are limited in what they can do while in the United States.
  • They will have to follow certain regulations to maintain their legal status.
  • They will have a date by which they must leave the country or apply for further privileges.
  • They must have a home outside the United States to which they intend to return.

Work Study

  • Students with exceptional financial need will be considered for work-study eligibility. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have previously worked in work-study positions will be given first priority.
  • Work-study jobs are part-time jobs available on and off-campus. If students have a work-study job, the U.S. government pays part of their wages. How much they earn depends on how many hours they work and their hourly pay rate.
  • Students can find work-study positions as well as other jobs through the Career Development Center. If they decide to change work-study jobs or take a second job, contact us. A federal work-study coordinator will work with students to make sure they stay eligible.

Career and Placement after Course

IU has several resources to help students find a job on or off-campus:

  • Job fairs – The Career Development Center (CDC) and other offices sponsor job fairs at various times during the year.
  • Classified ads – The Indiana Daily Student (IDS) newspaper lists jobs in its classified section. Look for hourly, on-campus jobs (unless they qualify for off-campus employment).
  • Academic departments – Many IU departments and offices fill their open positions directly (rather than listing their job opportunities with the CDC). Contact their academic unit and professors for possible job openings.
