Boston University admissions run on Common Application deadlines for undergraduates and per-school portals for graduate students, with an institutional English floor of IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90. Indian applicants generally need Class XII at 85 percent or higher for competitive undergraduate consideration and a four-year Bachelor’s degree with a strong B average for master’s programs.
- Next live deadline: Early Decision I for the Fall 2027 intake closes on 2 November 2026.
- Base tuition and application fee: undergraduate base tuition is USD 73,024 (around ₹69.63 Lakhs) for 2026-27, and the Common Application fee is USD 80 (around ₹7,628).
- Eligibility floor: Class XII at 85 percent for UG plus IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90; a four-year Bachelor’s plus the same English scores for most PG programs.
- Acceptance rate: around 11.1 percent for first-year applicants and near 50 percent for graduate cohorts.
Popular Indian-applicant tracks include the MS in Computer Science, the Questrom Full-Time MBA, and the BS in Business Administration at Questrom. Student reviews rate the Charles River campus highly for research access and Boston’s biotech and finance recruiting depth. Boston University Application Deadlines for Indian Students
Boston University runs three undergraduate cycles through the Common Application and per-school graduate cycles through Liaison CAS portals. Dates below are drawn from the official BU deadlines page, the Questrom Full-Time MBA admissions page, and the College of Engineering graduate deadlines page. All decisions in the table are for the Fall 2027 entry, Boston University’s primary intake.
BU’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall 2027 — every school and college opens seats here, and the Class of 2031 undergraduate pool and all master’s cohorts feed into this September entry.
| Intake | Level and Round | App Opens | Deadline | App Fee | Portal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | UG Early Decision I | 1 August 2026 | 2 November 2026 | USD 80 (₹7,628) | Common Application |
| Fall 2027 | UG Early Decision II | 1 August 2026 | 5 January 2027 | USD 80 (₹7,628) | Common Application |
| Fall 2027 | UG Regular Decision | 1 August 2026 | 5 January 2027 | USD 80 (₹7,628) | Common Application |
| Fall 2027 | Questrom Full-Time MBA Round 1 | Rolling | 7 October 2026 | USD 125 (₹11,919) | Questrom Portal |
| Fall 2027 | Questrom Full-Time MBA Round 2 | Rolling | 14 December 2026 | USD 125 (₹11,919) | Questrom Portal |
| Fall 2027 | Questrom Full-Time MBA Round 3 | Rolling | 3 March 2027 | USD 125 (₹11,919) | Questrom Portal |
| Fall 2027 | Engineering MS Priority (Scholarship) | 1 September 2026 | 15 January 2027 | USD 95 (₹9,058) | Liaison CAS |
| Fall 2027 | Engineering MS Standard | 1 September 2026 | 15 March 2027 | USD 95 (₹9,058) | Liaison CAS |
| Spring 2027 | Transfer January Entry | Open | 2 November 2026 | USD 80 (₹7,628) | Common Application |
| Fall 2027 | Transfer September Entry | 1 August 2026 | 15 March 2027 | USD 80 (₹7,628) | Common Application |
Two dates carry the highest merit-aid weight for Indian families. Undergraduate merit scholarship candidates must submit the full application by 1 December 2026, and the CSS Profile plus FAFSA files run on the same deadline as the application itself. Engineering master’s applicants must file by the 15 January 2027 priority deadline for automatic scholarship review — the 15 March 2027 deadline no longer feeds merit consideration.
Planning note: Early Decision I at Boston University is binding. Apply ED I only if BU is your firm top choice, since accepted students must withdraw applications elsewhere and post the enrollment deposit by mid-January 2027.
Boston University Eligibility for Indian Students
Boston University uses a holistic review model — meaning admissions officers weigh academics alongside essays, activities, recommendations, and demonstrated interest rather than applying a fixed cutoff. That said, the school publishes clear institutional floors. Full detail sits on the official BU international undergraduate applicant page and matching graduate school pages.
- UG academic floor: Class XII from CBSE, ISC, or a State Board with predicted results at or above 85 percent for competitive review.
- UG English floor: IELTS 7.0 overall, TOEFL iBT 90 with 20 in each section, or Duolingo 125 to 135.
- PG academic floor: a four-year Bachelor’s from a recognised Indian university with a minimum B average, roughly 65 to 70 percent depending on the school.
- Engineering MS English floor: IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90.
- Questrom MBA English floor: IELTS 6.5 per band, TOEFL 90, or Duolingo 120.
Boston University IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
Boston University does offer waivers, and the routes matter for Indian applicants because CBSE and ISC students often qualify without a formal test. Undergraduate waivers are granted at the discretion of the Board of Admissions — you submit the request alongside the application, and it is reviewed with your academic transcripts. Students whose full secondary curriculum was taught in English typically qualify.
Questrom MBA applicants receive an automatic waiver with two or more years of instruction in English at the undergraduate level or two or more years of full-time work experience in an English-speaking country. Because most Indian engineering and commerce programs teach in English, this waiver applies to a large share of Indian MBA applicants — attach a letter from the Indian university registrar confirming medium of instruction.
Insider note: A predicted 90 percent from a strong school with clear English medium of instruction and a well-argued essay has cleared BU with a waiver, but the College of Fine Arts and journalism programs still expect tested English scores.
Boston University PG Programs and English Scores
Boston University offers master’s programs across seventeen schools and colleges. The most India-heavy tracks sit in the Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Questrom School of Business. Base tuition for most graduate programs runs from USD 30,000 to USD 74,472 (around ₹28.60 Lakhs to ₹71.01 Lakhs) depending on school and credit load — see the funding for Indian students page for scholarships that trim this figure.

| MS Applied Data Analytics | 1 to 2 years | Bachelor’s with quantitative coursework, calculus and statistics preferred | IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90 |
| MS Data Science | 1.5 years | Bachelor’s with linear algebra, calculus, and programming | IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90 |
| MS Electrical and Computer Engineering | 2 years | Bachelor’s in ECE, CS, or allied engineering discipline | IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90 |

| MS Robotics and Autonomous Systems | 2 years | Bachelor’s in ECE, ME, or CS with control-systems background | IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90 |
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Boston University page for your chosen program before applying.
Boston University Undergraduate Programs and IELTS Minimums
Boston University offers over 300 undergraduate programs across ten colleges that admit first-year applicants directly. Indian applicants concentrate in Computer Science, Business Administration, and Data Science, with growing interest in Biomedical Engineering. Base tuition for 2026-27 is USD 73,024 (around ₹69.63 Lakhs) — for the complete cost of attendance and per-credit breakdown, check the course-wise fees breakdown.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| BS Computer Science | 4 years | Class XII with Mathematics; predicted 85 percent or higher | IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90 |
| BS Business Administration (Questrom) | 4 years | Class XII with Mathematics recommended; predicted 85 percent | IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90 |
| BS Data Science | 4 years | Class XII with Mathematics; predicted 85 percent or higher | IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90 |
| BS Economics | 4 years | Class XII with Mathematics; predicted 85 percent | IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90 |
| BS Biomedical Engineering | 4 years | Class XII PCM or PCB with Mathematics; predicted 85 percent | IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90 |
Standardized tests remain optional through the Fall 2028 cycle, but Indian applicants with SAT above 1450 or ACT above 33 tend to strengthen merit-scholarship consideration. Self-reported scores are accepted for review; official scores are required only before enrollment.
Boston University Questrom MBA Rounds and Requirements
Questrom School of Business runs a three-round Full-Time MBA cycle for Fall 2027 entry, with rolling review after Round 3 on a space-available basis. Base tuition is USD 74,472 per year (around ₹71.01 Lakhs). Round decisions and financial-aid awards are released together, so an earlier round improves scholarship odds — merit awards averaged more than half tuition for Fall 2025 admits.
| Round | Application Deadline | App Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | 7 October 2026 | USD 125 (₹11,919) |
| Round 2 | 14 December 2026 | USD 125 (₹11,919) |
| Round 3 | 3 March 2027 | USD 125 (₹11,919) |
Questrom MBA Work Experience and Test Requirements
GMAT and GRE are test-optional — applicants can request a waiver, but competitive submitted scores unlock additional merit-scholarship consideration. Admitted students hold at least two years of full-time post-Bachelor’s professional experience on average, and the class median sits close to five years. There is no MBA variant that fully waives the work-experience floor. Read the MBA at Boston University page for the full class profile.
MBA Essays and Interview Format
Every candidate submits either three video essays or one 750-word written essay. Interviews are invitation-only after application review and can be completed on campus, off campus, or virtually — Indian applicants typically take the virtual slot. Interview shortlisting is based on the full submitted file, not test scores alone.
Insider note: Indian MBA applicants who wait for Round 3 have historically seen tighter scholarship budgets. If your GMAT is above 650 or your GRE quant is above 165, target Round 1 for the strongest merit outcome.
Boston University PhD Admissions Pathway for Indian Students
Boston University offers PhD programs across engineering, arts and sciences, public health, and business at Questrom. Fall 2027 is the primary PhD intake, with application deadlines running from December 2026 to January 2027 depending on department. Doctoral admits typically receive full tuition remission plus a stipend of approximately USD 40,000 for the 2026-27 academic year, subject to departmental variation — see the funding for Indian students page for stipend detail by school.
Boston University PhD Application Steps
- Identify one or two faculty whose research aligns with your intended dissertation before applying.
- Submit the online application through Liaison CAS with a Statement of Purpose capped at 1,500 words.
- Provide two to three letters of recommendation, ideally from research supervisors.
- Submit GRE scores where the department still requires them; many BU PhD programs have moved to GRE-optional review.
- Pay the USD 95 (around ₹9,058) application fee per program.
PhD English and Academic Requirements
PhD applicants meet the same institutional English floor of IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90. Academic eligibility is a four-year Bachelor’s with strong research signal — an Indian Master’s degree with published research or an integrated Bachelor’s-Master’s from an IIT or IISc counts favourably.
Planning note: Contact prospective faculty by October 2026. Doctoral admissions committees weigh a professor’s willingness to advise you before financial packages are finalized in February 2027.
Boston University Application Process Step by Step
The Boston University application process runs in a fixed sequence for undergraduate applicants and a parallel per-school sequence for graduate students. Steps below walk through the Common App route for first-year undergraduate applicants — the most India-heavy pool.
- Create a Common Application account at commonapp.org. The 2026-27 Common App cycle opened on 1 August 2026. Add Boston University to your list of colleges.
- Pay the application fee of USD 80 (around ₹7,628) on the Common Application portal at submission.
- Draft the Common App personal statement and the Boston University supplemental essay. Both are required.
- Request one teacher evaluation and a school counselor recommendation through the Common App School Report form.
- Upload official Class XII transcripts with predicted results plus first-marking-period grades for ED, or first-semester grades for RD.
- Submit English proficiency scores — IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo — using BU institution code 3087 for TOEFL score reporting.
- File the CSS Profile and FAFSA if you are applying for need-based aid, by the same deadline as the application.
- Await decision — ED I decisions release on 15 December 2026, ED II on 9 February 2027, and Regular Decision on 28 March 2027.
- Post enrollment deposit — for RD this is due by 1 May 2027; ED I deposits are due by mid-January 2027.
Graduate applicants apply directly through the school-specific Liaison CAS portal rather than the Common App. Questrom MBA applicants use the Questrom portal, engineering master’s applicants use the College of Engineering CAS portal, and arts and sciences applicants use the GRS portal. Offer letters name any conditions and the acceptance deadline — most graduate offers require reply within 30 days, and BU permits a one-year deferral request in genuine cases such as visa refusal or a medical emergency.
BU Documents Required for International Applicants
Documents for Boston University are submitted through the Common Application for undergraduates or through the school-specific Liaison CAS portal for graduate students. The list below covers paperwork only — academic thresholds and English scores sit in the Eligibility section.
- Passport bio page: PDF copy of the photo and data page.
- Class XII transcripts: official secondary school transcripts with English translation and predicted results where applicable.
- Bachelor’s transcripts (PG only): semester-wise mark sheets and degree certificate from your Indian university.
- Statement of Purpose: Common App personal statement plus BU supplement for UG; Statement of Purpose capped at 1,500 words for graduate applicants.
- Letters of Recommendation: one teacher evaluation plus one counselor recommendation for UG; two to three academic or professional recommendations for PG.
- English proficiency score report: IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo score sent directly by the testing agency.
- Resume or CV: required for all graduate programs and for MBA candidates.
- Financial documentation: Confidential Statement of Finances plus a bank verification letter covering the first year’s total billed cost.
- School Report form: Common App counselor form for undergraduate applicants.
- Portfolio or audition materials: required for College of Fine Arts applicants and for the College of Communication film track.
Boston University Acceptance Rate Trends
Boston University’s undergraduate acceptance rate has trended down over the last five cycles as application volume climbed above 76,000 for the Fall 2025 first-year class. For Fall 2025 the overall undergraduate acceptance rate was 11.1 percent, with 3,450 students enrolling from that admitted pool. Graduate admissions run materially more open at roughly 49.7 percent across master’s programs, though selectivity varies sharply by school — Questrom Full-Time MBA and the MS Business Analytics program admit under 30 percent, while several engineering master’s tracks sit closer to 60 percent. Cross-reference with BU’s ranking band to see how the acceptance rate maps to the QS position.
How the Rate Splits Across Rounds
Early Decision admits carry a materially higher rate — around 25 to 28 percent — because the binding commitment signals BU is the top choice. Regular Decision hovers close to 10 percent. Indian applicants concentrated in Computer Science and Data Science face tighter odds than the overall figure suggests because those programs draw heavy volume.
What Improves the Odds for Indian Applicants
Class XII above 90 percent from CBSE or ISC, IELTS at or above 7.5, a strongly reasoned BU supplemental essay, and demonstrated interest through campus visits or admissions events all correlate with admit outcomes above the base rate.
Insider note: ED I applications from Indian students with predicted 92 percent plus a considered essay have historically seen admit rates near double the RD pool, but ED is binding — commit only if BU is your firm first choice.
USA F-1 Student Visa Process for Indian Students
Indian students admitted to Boston University apply for the F-1 student visa after receiving the Form I-20 from BU’s International Students and Scholars Office. The I-20 is issued once you post the enrollment deposit and clear the financial documentation review — typically 4 to 6 weeks after acceptance. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around ₹33,373), then complete the DS-160 form and pay the visa application fee of USD 185 (around ₹17,640) to book a visa interview at a US Consulate in India.
Bring the I-20, DS-160 confirmation, valid passport, admission letter, tuition receipt, and financial documents covering one full academic year to the interview. On arrival in Boston, complete SEVIS check-in with the International Students and Scholars Office within 30 days and register for orientation. F-1 students may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during term and apply for Optional Practical Training after program completion — STEM master’s graduates qualify for a 36-month OPT extension.
2026 update: US Consulates in India have opened additional student visa slots for the Fall 2027 intake between March and July 2027. Book the earliest interview window that fits your timeline to reduce reschedule risk closer to program start.
Tips and Checklist for Boston University Admissions
The following tips and steps draw on Indian-applicant patterns at Boston University over recent cycles. Items are ordered by timeline so you can lift them into your own calendar.
- Start the Common App by mid-August 2026: the platform opened 1 August 2026, and account rollover retains your essay drafts if you began earlier.
- Register for IELTS or TOEFL by early September 2026: the score-reporting cycle takes 10 to 15 days, and Duolingo results ship in 48 hours if IELTS slots are full.
- Request transcripts eight weeks before your target deadline: CBSE and ISC schools take longer to issue predicted results with English translations.
- Draft the BU supplemental essay in October 2026: BU asks a specific "why BU" prompt, so name programs, faculty, and student groups rather than campus features.
- File CSS Profile and FAFSA on the same date as your application: late aid files can push you to needs-aware review even if the academic file is strong.
- Send teacher evaluations by mid-October 2026 for ED I: your counselor and one subject teacher submit through the Common App School Report and Teacher Evaluation forms.
- Book the US visa interview by April 2027: Consulate availability tightens through May and June for September-entry Indian students.
- Complete SEVIS check-in within 30 days of arriving in Boston: failing to check in voids your F-1 status and requires reinstatement.
The list above covers when and in what order to act. Documents themselves are listed in the Documents Required section above and should not be re-collected here.
Boston University suits Indian applicants who value a large private research university with deep Boston recruiting access, especially in computing, life sciences, business, and communication. Apply Early Decision I only if BU is your firm top choice, target the Fall 2027 intake for the widest program set, and layer merit scholarship consideration into the priority deadlines rather than the standard ones.

- BU supports diversity and inclusivity. There is a large International population which gives the opportunity to meet and interact with people from different culture and backgrounds.
- BU's campus is spread across charles river, so you get to roam around and attend classes in prestigious historic buildings.
- The academic programs are diverse and very well structured.
Dislikes
- It is way too expensive. The food, groceries etc and especially the utilities and rent is too much for a student
- The tuition is extremely expensive with challenging time constraint assignments
- There is less city life as it a part of college hub so people tend to face mental health issues - depression anxiety, loneliness due to academic pressure and harsh gloomy winters
Scholarship
- There are no scholarships for international students from Boston University. However, there were people who were there on scholarships from their own government.
- Students need to show funds, be it their own—father, mother or any family member who is sponsoring them—or via a bank loan or any of the other organisations. One needs to show around $100,000 approx. in funds, which include the tuition and living expenses.

- Well, Boston University has its own Merchandise shop where you can buy Huddies, T-shirts, stationery, Planners, Books, electronics, and more, but it's quite expensive.
- Boston University does not offer financial aid to international students, and you cannot work off Campus.
- BU conducts lectures even during nights and many a times you have attend lectures till 9:00 PM.
Overview
In a nutshell, the admission process consists of IELTS / GRE --> Wes Course Evaluation --> Application --> Results. Here my IELTS, undergrad grades and strong application were the key things for my selection to Boston University. I started quite early to build my strong research-oriented profile for my master's in computer science. I come from a Mechanical Engineering background and did my research in computer vision, Predictive maintenance and implementing computer vision Algorithms in the Manufacturing sector. I presented my 1st research paper at the IIT BHU international conference in 2023 and submitted 2 more papers in international journals. We designed and built a Hexapod Robot with an innovation to resist the impact, Got selected for the Gujarat Council of Science and Technology and filed a patent for the design. I also hold one more patent with my professor during my undergrad for designing a welding machine for micro-welding. I highlighted all these in my resume during my application.

- I like the Part-time job at the campus system.
Dislikes
- I do not like self-registering to the class system. If a class is full and I want it, I will fail to get it.
Overview
I chose this university as this university is globally known and had a good academic curriculum. Professors are full-time professionals and part-time, helping us require an up to date practical knowledge.
Likes
- Very safe city and campus + very diverse crowd
Dislikes
- Very very expensive tuition + cost of living too unaffordable + not the best career resources
Overview
I applied to 8 schools, and got in 7 of them. I chose the top-ranked one out of the 7. Wanted to be on the East Coast because of my aspiration to work on Wall Street. Overall experience was average, I wish I had gone to a cheaper school.
Likes
- The people are very accommodating and friendly, the academics are strong and the program is well-known and reputable.
Dislikes
- Low stipend, less freedom to take courses outside the university.
Overview
I chose this university as I was familiar with the city, the reputation of the program, the professors aligned with my interest, the people seemed nice, the stipend is livable (barely), and the proximity to other big economic departments (Harvard, MIT, NBER).
Likes
- I really liked the city as it is safe and one of the biggest hubs in US. And the university was very well ranked especially for my program.
Overview
Overall I am having a great experience so far and one more thing I’d like to highlight is Boston University has a lot of opportunities for on-campus jobs so you can make some money to pay your rent and have some fun as well.
Scholarship
I received a $12000 scholarship from my program, but I didn’t have to apply separately it was given on the basis of merit.
Likes
- Course and curriculum is updated and the professors are very helpful. Most professors are part time and work in organizations during the day so some professors also refer you to their organizations. Also, we are close to MIT and Harvard and are allowed to attend their events which is a plus.
- I got 4 admits and out of those, BU’s curriculum was the best. Also, it was the highest reputed University out of my admits. My other admits were from UIC, SJSU, Santa Clara University and IIT Chicago.
Dislikes
- Campus is in the city. It has its pros as well like transportation is easy and there are a lot of off campus housing nearby. The only thing I dislike about the the university is that its very expensive. And as a city, Boston is expensive so off campus housing is also very expensive.
Overview
It was a really good and different experience. At first I thought it was very stressful but then you start liking the life here. It is definitely an experience that everyone should have once in their lifetime.
