Boston University admissions run through three undergraduate rounds and program-specific graduate deadlines. Indian applicants typically need Class XII near 85% for BS entry and a Bachelor’s plus IELTS 7.0 for graduate programs.

  • Next live cutoff: Fall 2027 Early Decision I closes Nov 2, 2026 (primary intake).
  • UG base tuition USD 69,870 (INR 66.66 Lakhs), Common Application fee USD 80 (INR 7,632).
  • Eligibility floor (recommended): Class XII near 85% for UG. PG needs a Bachelor’s with IELTS 7.0.
  • Acceptance rate: BU does not publish an official figure. UG admits reportedly near 12%.

Popular picks among Indian applicants include the MS in Computer Science, MS Applied Data Analytics, and the Questrom Full-Time MBA, drawn to Boston’s biotech, finance, and consulting pipelines. Reviews from Indian students at Boston University highlight strong faculty access and a large South Asian community, offset by high cost of living in the city.

Status. Open. Primary intake: Fall 2027 (September start). Nearest live cutoffs are the Questrom MBA Round 1 on Oct 7, 2026 and undergraduate Early Decision I on Nov 2, 2026.

Boston University Application Deadlines for Indian Students

Boston University runs three admission tracks. Undergraduate applicants file through the Common Application across two Early Decision rounds and one Regular Decision round. Graduate deadlines sit with each school. Questrom, BU’s school of business, runs a three-round Full-Time MBA cycle. Fall is the primary intake, and most Indian applicants target it. Confirm each date on the BU Fall 2027 deadlines page.

Boston University Eligibility Criteria for Indian Students

Boston University evaluates Indian applicants against school-specific academic thresholds plus a common English language floor. Undergraduate review is holistic and considers essays, recommendations, and extracurriculars alongside grades. Graduate review weighs prior coursework, research fit, and standardised scores where required. All test minimums and waivers are drawn from the BU English language proficiency page.

  • UG general entry (recommended): Class XII around 85% with strong subject-relevant grades.
  • PG general entry (recommended): Bachelor’s degree, competitive GPA equivalent to around 70%.

English proficiency minimums vary by school. Undergraduate applicants and most master’s programs across the College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Engineering need IELTS Academic 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 5.0.

Boston University Application Process for Indian Students

Indian applicants complete the process end-to-end online. Each track uses a different portal, but the underlying documentation is broadly the same: transcripts, English test scores, essays, recommendations, and financial proof for the F-1 visa. Steps below cover the Fall 2027 cycle currently open.

  1. Create a Common Application account (undergraduate) or a MyBU Applicant Portal account (graduate).
  2. Select Boston University and your target programme, then fill in personal, academic, and family details.
  3. Upload Class XII or Bachelor’s transcripts with a certified English translation where the original is not in English.
  4. Submit official IELTS or TOEFL scores through the test provider using BU’s institution code.
  5. Complete the essay or Statement of Purpose per your programme’s word limit (Common App essay for UG, up to 1,500-word SOP for graduate).
  6. Request recommendation letters from two teachers or professors and one school counsellor for UG.
  7. Upload a signed Confidential Financial Statement plus current bank documentation covering first-year costs.
  8. Pay the application fee of USD 80 (INR 7,632) for undergraduate on the Common App portal, USD 95 (INR 9,063) for graduate, or USD 125 (INR 11,925) for Questrom MBA.
  9. Track status, upload missing documents, and view decisions through the MyBU Applicant Portal.

Before you apply: Set the passport-issued name in the Common App to match the passport data page exactly. A mismatch delays I-20 issuance later.

Boston University Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline

BU releases decisions on fixed dates for undergraduate rounds and on rolling schedules for most graduate programmes. Undergraduate Early Decision I decisions release around December 15, Early Decision II around February 9, and Regular Decision by March 28. Admitted UG applicants confirm by May 1. ED I and ED II offers are binding for admits, meaning you must withdraw applications elsewhere and enrol at BU.

Graduate offers arrive one to three months after the priority deadline. Master’s admits typically have a four- to six-week window to confirm and remit the enrolment deposit. PhD admits at CAS receive fellowship terms alongside the offer and are asked to reply by April 15 under the standard US doctoral timeline. Questrom MBA admits from Round 1 typically hear back by December, with Round 2 decisions by early February and Round 3 by April.

Deferral policies are conservative. Undergraduate deferrals are considered only for compelling personal, medical, or national-service reasons and require written approval. Graduate deferrals are decided programme by programme, most often for one term rather than a full year.

Boston University Documents Required for Indian Students

The document checklist splits between academic paperwork and visa-supporting financial paperwork. Assemble the set below well before the deadline. Certified English translations are needed for any document not originally in English, and the College of Engineering does not require WES evaluation for translations.

  • Passport: Colour scan of the data page, matching the applicant name field.
  • Academic transcripts: Class X, Class XII, and Bachelor’s transcripts in original plus certified English translation.
  • Degree certificates: Provisional or final Bachelor’s degree certificate for PG applicants.
  • Statement of Purpose: Up to 1,500 words for graduate programmes, aligned to programme fit.
  • Common App essay: Up to 650 words for first-year undergraduate applicants.
  • Recommendation letters: Two teacher evaluations plus one counsellor report for UG; two to three academic or professional recommenders for PG.
  • Resume or CV: One to two pages covering academic, work, and extracurricular history.
  • English test score report: IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, or Cambridge, sent directly by the test provider.
  • Confidential Financial Statement: Signed form plus current bank statements covering first-year cost of attendance.
  • Photographs: Recent passport-sized colour photo where the online form requests it.

Boston University Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

Boston University does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Publicly reported figures estimate undergraduate admission around 12%, based on Class of 2029 admit data across all applicant pools. Master’s programmes across schools typically report acceptance near 45 to 55%, based on program-mix estimates. Explore detailed acceptance rate trends for year-on-year movement.

Boston University Acceptance Rate for Indian Undergraduates

Indian applicants are reviewed in the same holistic pool as domestic applicants, with the same academic benchmarks. BU is need-aware for international applicants, meaning the ability to pay influences the admit decision. Around 25% of BU’s undergraduate body is international. Early Decision rounds carry noticeably higher admit rates than Regular Decision because the pool is smaller and binding.

Boston University Acceptance Rate for PG Programs

Master’s acceptance varies sharply by school. Highly quantitative programmes such as MS Computer Science and the Questrom MBA sit at the lower end of the range, while professional master’s at MET and SPH sit at the higher end. PhD acceptance is significantly lower, often under 15%, because seats are pegged to funded assistantships.

Insider note: Indian applicants applying through ED I with strong Class XII grades (above 90%) and IELTS above 7.5 see materially better odds than the general 12% figure suggests.

Boston University admissions reward strong Class XII grades, IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 5.0, and a well-argued essay. Indian applicants get the best odds by applying to Fall 2027 through ED I or Round 1 of Questrom, with financial proof ready before the deadline. Confirm current dates and score bands on official BU pages before you file.

Scholarship

  • There are no scholarships for international students from Boston University. However, there were people who were there on scholarships from their own government.
  • Students need to show funds, be it their own—father, mother or any family member who is sponsoring them—or via a bank loan or any of the other organisations. One needs to show around $100,000 approx. in funds, which include the tuition and living expenses.

Overview

In a nutshell, the admission process consists of IELTS / GRE --> Wes Course Evaluation --> Application --> Results. Here my IELTS, undergrad grades and strong application were the key things for my selection to Boston University. I started quite early to build my strong research-oriented profile for my master's in computer science. I come from a Mechanical Engineering background and did my research in computer vision, Predictive maintenance and implementing computer vision Algorithms in the Manufacturing sector. I presented my 1st research paper at the IIT BHU international conference in 2023 and submitted 2 more papers in international journals. We designed and built a Hexapod Robot with an innovation to resist the impact, Got selected for the Gujarat Council of Science and Technology and filed a patent for the design. I also hold one more patent with my professor during my undergrad for designing a welding machine for micro-welding. I highlighted all these in my resume during my application.

Overview

I applied to 8 schools, and got in 7 of them. I chose the top-ranked one out of the 7. Wanted to be on the East Coast because of my aspiration to work on Wall Street. Overall experience was average, I wish I had gone to a cheaper school.

I chose this university as I was familiar with the city, the reputation of the program, the professors aligned with my interest, the people seemed nice, the stipend is livable (barely), and the proximity to other big economic departments (Harvard, MIT, NBER).
