VISA & Work Study

VISA

The Office of International Services (ISSS) helps international students who have been admitted to a program of study at the University of Maryland, College Park, through the process of applying for either an F-1 or J-1 visa.

  • The F-1 visa is the most often used visa by international students to study at an accredited U.S. college, university, or English language institute. Students on F-1 visas come to the United States for a full degree program.
  • The J-1 visa is used for educational and cultural exchange programs at the University of Maryland. Students on J-1 visas typically come to the United States to study for a shorter period of time - one to two semesters.

Work Study

  • Jobs on campus are a wonderful source of employment and experience for students.  Schedules are usually flexible in order to accommodate the student’s school schedule. They also offer students a comfortable, familiar and supportive environment to cultivate important skills future employers will look for such as leadership, problem-solving, communication and working as part of a team.
  • Federal Work-Study is a federally funded employment program available to both undergraduate and graduate students who have financial need. If students receive Federal Work-Study as a part of their financial aid packet, they should definitely check their website for postings of part-time employment opportunities.

Career and Placement after Course

The University Career Center hosts several career fairs during the fall and spring semesters for UMD students and alumni from all academic backgrounds. Fairs offer opportunities to network with employers from a wide range of industries and are great avenues to make connections for internship and full-time positions.
