Doane University was established in the year 1871. The college officially opened its doors to students in July of 1872. Doane changed its name from Doane College to Doane University in the year 2016. It is a privately run, non-profit institution offering undergraduate, graduate, professional and online programs in non-traditional fields. The main campus of the university is located in Crete city of Nebraska.

Doane University has four campuses. The main campus in Crete comprises of several buildings, dedicated to different functioning and offers only undergraduate courses. The other campuses are situated in Lincoln, Grand Island, and Omaha, providing undergraduate and graduate programs in traditional and professional study areas.
More than 75% of students live on campus. The main campus has four residence halls for first-year and transfer students. Students are also given three dining options with different meal plans ranging from 100 USD - 1000 USD. Doane University does not provide any housing or dining facility on the other campuses. Names of these halls are Frees, Sheldon, Smith, and Hansen Halls.
Doane University offers undergraduate, graduate, teaching endorsement and non-degree programs in several different study areas. It also offers professional/non-traditional degree programs. Though the international student population at Doane is quite less, students from any country in the world are allowed a place in the university. Undergraduate programs have an acceptance rate of 68%, while the graduate schools have an open admission policy. Upon admission decision, the designated school official will proceed with the I-20 form.
