Founded in 1972, by Walter Cudnohufsky, the Conway School is a nonprofit, graduate school of ecological design. It offers a 10 months Master of Science in Ecological Design program. The MSED (Master of Science in Ecological Design) is the only specific program offered by the school and is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges since 1989.

There is an international representation in the student body on campus, with students hailing from - Norway, Morocco, Canada, Mexico, Chile, and Panama. Applications are made online and documents may be submitted via email and international students need to be fluent in English. International students are granted both need-based tuition grants and federal loans provided they meet the eligibility requirements and submit the relevant documents.

The Conway School as a unique school for ecological design stands apart from other schools due to some of its special features as listed below –

  • Being a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-Certified School, Conway school welcomes international students from all over the world.
  • The school has a partnership with nonprofit organizations, The Ecological Landscape Alliance (ELA), which allows its students and alumni to participate in summer workshops.
  • Conway School has an alliance with the Yestermorrow Design/Build School, which gives students of Conway to participate in workshops and certificate programs offered by Yestermorrow, at discounts of 10-25%.
  • Conway has a partnership with The UMass Amherst Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning (LARP)
    • Offers professionally accredited (MRP, MLA, BSLA) and also Ph.D. degrees to alumni of Conway School.
  • The school has a partnership with the College of Environment and Design, University of Georgia
    • Offers Conway School students seats in their MLA program as well as transfer credits to the University of Georgia’s Master of Environmental Planning and Design (MEPD) program.

The Conway School Programs, Campus and Accommodation

Campus and Residence

The school previously had a campus at Easthampton and currently operates out of its new campus in Northampton, Massachusetts. The campus has access to natural spaces for learning purposes such as – wetlands, public parks with green infrastructure, both traditional and urban agriculture, suburban residential settlements, rail-trail bike path conversions, and conserved wildlands.

The Conway School offers a Master of Science program in Ecological Design (MSED) with a special focus on both ecological and social responsibility. The program is offered only full time and there is no option for part-time classes.

  • Application: International applicants can apply online. Apply now
  • With effect from the 2020-2021 academic year, there shall be no application fee.
  • Application Deadlines: Applicants can apply by the following deadlines:
    • Early action: November 6
    • Regular: January 22
    • Late application: May 8
  • General Requirements: Application form, official transcripts, LOR (two), resume.
  • Additional Requirements: Design portfolios, interview
  • English Language Proficiency: TOEFL scores may be required for international applicants.

The Conway School Cost of Attendance

On enrolment, students must pay a nonrefundable deposit of 750 USD and this is adjusted with the first installment of tuition fees to be paid. The tuition fees a student pays at Conway School is of 2 kinds as follows based on whether they receive need-based tuition grants or not –

Students need to bear additional costs for equipment, school supplies, and their own laptop.

Note: Applicants must note that the first installment of the tuition fee must be paid by September 1 and the second installment must be paid by February 1.

Living expenses

Living costs including accommodation, meals, mandatory health insurance, and other miscellaneous expenses vary approximately between 15000 USD to 30000 USD for the 10-month program at Conway School.
