University of Hawaii, Hilo, USA enrolls international applicants for undergraduate and graduate courses in more than 50 programs mainly in the areas of Agriculture, American culture, Women studies, Business Administration, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Marine Sciences, Communication, Computer Sciences and Informatics, Education, Linguistics, Liberal Arts, Natural Sciences, Environmental Science, General Studies and Health and Related professions. 

The University accepts the application all year round but allots the seats on the basis of availability for Fall and Spring semesters for undergraduates and graduate programs. All applicants need to fulfill the requirements of admission detailed by the institution.

The requirements include completing an application, uploading the required documents, and providing the financial worthiness to attend the institution as a full-time student.

The international students have to obtain a study visa before they can reach the desired country and start their studies hence their admissions are subject to a grant of visa which is entirely dependent on the US Embassy.

Admission Requirements for International Students

  • Complete the International student information supplemental form.
  • Submit official (translated in English) copies of all Academic records starting from High school and above through the institution directly in a sealed envelope at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, 200 W. Kāwili St., Hilo, HI 96720-4091 USA, Attn: Admissions Office. A GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4 is recommended for both undergraduate and graduate applicants.
  • For graduate admissions, the transcripts are required to be evaluated by authorized agencies like NACES or WES.
  • English language proficiency test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or other accepted tests).
  • SAT /ACT scores are for undergraduate admissions and GMAT/GRE scores for graduate programs are recommended.
  • For graduate admissions, two letters of recommendation from academic counselors/teachers and Resume are needed.
  • An essay stating why you want to join the College in around 500 words.
  • Submit a financial statement with original supporting documents from a reputed financial institution confirming that the applicant has sufficient funds to cover tuition, boarding, lodging, transportation, books and supplies, and other miscellaneous expenses to cover the period of study at the university. Financial statement/evidence must be notarized and needs to be accompanied by the bank statement or the letter from the Employer or the sponsor. The Financial worthiness of a minimum of USD 37,200 per year is required to be demonstrated successfully.

Issuance of I20 or IAP 66 may take 6 to 8 week’s time. Applicants need to keep this in time and must start the application process keeping in mind the start date of the session they are applying for.

Visa Process for International Students

Applicants must submit a complete application with all the documents after which they will receive Form I-20 or IAP66 from the Institute. The documents needed to receive I-20/IAP66 are :

  • Application form, Resume, Essay, and recommendation letters.
  • Copies ID pages of the passport
  • The official copy of the academic Transcripts of all qualifications achieved prior to seeking admission
  • Proof of financial support (Bank statement/ Sponsor letter)
  • Passport pages showing identification, date of birth and residential address information

After receiving I-20, the applicant should apply for a student visa (F-1 visa) at the US Embassy by fulfilling the Embassy requirements of filing a completed application form and depositing the fee.

For obtaining a student visa to study in the USA, In-person interviews and Biometrics are compulsory, which should be scheduled and attended by the applicant at the nearest Embassy office.

Maintaining the timeline is extremely important and always factor in a week extra to avoid last minutes contingencies.

The international students have to maintain the full time student status according to the laws of the country. Once the applicant completes all requirements for admission and is in receipt of the letter of acceptance, he /she should begin the I-20 and visa process.
