Lock Haven University commonly abbreviated as LHU was established in 1870 and became a part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher education (PASSHE) since 1982. Pennsylvania state offers international students great opportunities to explore its many historical sites and culture.

Programs, Campus, and Residence

Programs

LHU offers programs at bachelors, masters, and majors and minors in many fields online and on-campus. Lock Haven University offers 49 undergraduate majors and certifications with 47 minor programs. 

Master's programs are offered in education, counseling, sports studies, actuarial science, athletic training, physician assistant, and health sciences. Out of the graduate programs, Actuarial Science, Alternative Education, Counseling, Health Science, Sport Science, Teaching and Learning are offered online.

The most popular majors at the LHU are Education, Sport, and recreation, Management, Criminal Justice, Business, Communication media, Biology, etc.

Campus

The main campus of LHU is located on the west branch of the Susquehanna River in the scenic mountains of Pennsylvania. 

  • The LHU campus has 3 colleges:
    • The Stephen Poorman College of Business, Information Systems, and Human Services
    • The College of Liberal Arts and Education
    • The College of Natural, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
  • LHU provides SMART classrooms and virtualized computer labs for effective learning.
  • State-of-the-art recreation facilities are offered to students - including pool and climbing walls.
  • All of the campus buildings have internet access and over 90% of classrooms in LHU are wireless.
  • The LHU campus offers various support services including tutorial services, writing, and math centers.
  • Career development and professional advisement are provided to all the students.
  • There are over 150 clubs and organizations for the students to get involved in and earn enriching life experiences.
  • Activities at LHU include club and intramural sports, movies, theatre, jazz, and marching band, student government, cheerleading, dance, the student newspaper, ROTC and many more.

Residence

Over 1700 students can live on campus in LHU. Students can have their choice of residence from the traditional residence halls, suite-style halls, and apartment complexes provided at the LHU. Residency costs and living configurations vary depending on the number of roommates and the type of space you choose. Students can also look for off-campus student housing to stay in the US.

The types of residence halls in LHU are as follows:

  • Fairview Suites; provides suite-style room options. The building houses more students than any other hall.
  • McEntire Hall; a traditional style residence hall with co-ed rooms by the wing. It provides a scenic view of campus and the Bald Eagle Valley.
  • North Hall; a co-ed hall by a floor that accommodates 208 students with modern facilities and a scenic view of the campus. 
  • Smith Hall; a co-ed hall by wings with an accommodation of 248 students with single or double rooms
  • Woolridge Hall; accommodating 210 students on a co-ed hall by floor with many areas newly updated.
  • Campus Village; saved for upper-class students that house 170 students in one, double or triple occupancy rooms.
  • Evergreen Commons; 2-4 bedrooms apartments located near the university.

Students can choose their meals from over any of the 12 meal plans available.

Admission Process

Lock Haven University offers admission to students twice a year in the fall and spring semesters. The university offers a wide variety of programs to choose from. The admission process for international students is as follows:

The application deadlines are as follows:

  • Fall semester: June 1
  • Spring semester: November 1

Applications are accepted up to 1 year prior and have to be submitted at least three months before the intended enrollment date. The admission requirements for a prospective student is as follows:

  • Submit Official All-Academic Transcripts
  • Submit English language test scores from any of the following: TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, Pearson: PTE Academic, Cambridge English (CPE), GTEC, and Duolingo
  • Submit ACT or SAT test scores
  • Copy of passport
  • International students require F-1 student visa to study at Lock Haven University

Financial Aid

First-year traditional undergraduate international students can apply for the You Are Welcome Here scholarship. The scholarship is applicable to all undergraduate academic majors and fields of study. It scholarship covers a minimum of 50% tuition and has to be renewed annually.  

  • The application form has to be downloaded from the official website and mailed to internationaladmissions@lockhaven.edu.
  • Students have to demonstrate interest and personal initiative in activities involving intercultural learning and exchange to be selected for the scholarship.
  • Student essay or video is required demonstrating why you must be selected for the scholarship.
  • Must be able to fund the remaining expenses not covered by the scholarship.
  • The scholarship is offered for Lock Haven University tuition only and does not cover other expenses such as university fees, parking permits, books or supplies, etc.
  • The scholarship is non-transferable and has no cash exchange value.

Work While You Study

Students can work upto 20 hours per week on-campus while school is in session. Students are allowed to work 40 hours per week when school is not in session i.e, during summer or intersession breaks.

  • The 20 hours of work include the work done for an assistantship, if you avail one.
  • Students are not allowed to work off-campus without receiving prior authorization from the U.S. Federal Government and/or the Center for Global Engagement depending upon the visa status type.
  • There are very limited employment possibilities. J-1 Scholars are permitted to work as stipulated on the DS-2019 for Lock Haven University.  If such opportunities arise, the student has to schedule an appointment with a Center for Global Engagement advisor.

Alumni Network

The Lock Haven University Alumni Association serves the alumni of LHU by connecting them with the university, current students and their fellow classmates. It offers opportunities to student mentoring, participating in LHU events and also for finding job opportunities.

The Professional Resource Center helps LHU alumni by providing transitional career advising support.
