Located in the center of Manhattan, Sotheby’s Institute of Art-New York offers students easy access to the city's rich cultural and historical resources.

It is based in one of the most vibrant global art cities with thousands of auction houses, blue-chip and emerging galleries, world-class museums, etc. Being the largest art market in the world, New York accounts for the majority of all art market sales internationally and also is home to Wall street-the financial hub of the world.

New York attracts top faculty, leading art market professionals, established and emerging artists, and experts from various cultural backgrounds.

Sotheby’s faculty are dedicated to teaching professionals with deep knowledge of art history, art objects, art theory, art law, art business, international art markets, art valuation, and professional practices in the art industry today.

Housing/ Residence Facilities

Currently there are no housing facilities for graduate students enrolled at Sotheby's Institute of Arts. However, SIA helps students find affordable student housing options in New York which are close to the college campus.

Students can look for homestays or shared or rented apartments that are affordable and pocket-friendly.

ApplicationDeadline: The application deadline for Fall 2020 at Sotheby's Institute of Art is January 15(Early Decision) and March 2(Regular Decision).

Eligibility: To be eligible for admissions at Sotheby's Institute of Art, a student must have

  • Earned a bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • An applicant is expected to have knowledge of art history (applicants without art knowledge can be admitted on a conditional admission based on completion of prerequisite coursework.

  • Payment of non-refundable application fee

Cost of Attendance

Sotheby's Institute of Art tuition and fees are annually updated depending on the curriculum and field study destinations. The program course work is completed in semesters 1 and 2 for 30 credit hours. This is the minimum required credits for a Graduate Certificate.

For students pursuing a Master’s degree, a thesis or capstone project is required. To get a master’s degree a total of 36 credit hours are a requirement that can be undertaken in the third semester (either independently off-campus or alongside continued coursework on campus).

Students are required to pay a non-refundable deposit of 1,500 USD upon acceptance which is applied to the Semester 1 tuition.

Scholarship and Financial Aid

Qualified domestic and international students enrolled at Sotheby’s Institute of Art are eligible for partial-tuition scholarships towards full program tuition. The scholarships awarded are based on the student’s need and merit. To be eligible to get financial aid, students are required to submit a Master’s or Graduate Certificate program application. Students will receive the scholarship confirmation along with the admission confirmation.

Documents required for applying for the partial-tuition scholarship include:

  • Scholarship Form
  • Equivalent of proof of income (additional documentation may be required including parents’ financial information)
  • Indicate they would like to be considered on the application form.

Deadlines: Early Decision: January 15 and Regular Decision: March 2.

International students can also apply for independent international scholarships or other financial aid options such as education loans to finance their studies at Sotheby's Institute of Art.

Work while you study

International students on an F-1 student visa to the USA might have to face some restrictions regarding paid on unpaid work. This also includes the enrollment in the internship elective within the MA curriculum.

However, students are eligible to work for a limited of 20 hours per week. Limited on-campus employment options are available for international students.
