Oberlin College and Conservatory is a type of private co-educational institute, established in 1833 by Rev. John J. Shepherd and Philo P. Stewart. Its main campus is located in Oberlin, 35 miles southwest of Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The city has a population of 8,300 and known for this college, with a high standard of living.

Oberlin College and Conservatory has two major institutions, which includes an undergraduate college of arts and science and a school of music. The college is well known for its excellence in arts and music, all around the world.

It is one of the oldest liberal arts colleges and is known to be the first college in the United States to adopt a policy regarding the admission of black students in 1835 and granting undergraduate degrees to women in 1841, under the coeducational program of the College.

Campus

Oberlin College has a 440-acre vibrant campus in a suburban setting, that provides students with a peaceful space to learn and grow. The college has also won Prestigious Awards for its library academic excellence.

There are many conservatories and key attractions located on the Oberlin Campus. Some of them are Oberlin Campus Library, Oberlin Conservatory, Allen Memorial Art Museum, Richard D. Baron ’64 Art Gallery, Apollo and Kander Theater, and Chapels.

Housing Facilities

Oberlin College provides on-campus living facilities for students coming from all around the globe to study there. It offers two housing facilities, namely the campus-owned housing or in Student Cooperation Association co-op.

College has the following housing programs, based on the parameters of space and level of study of the students:

  • First-Year Residential Experience: It is only for the first-year student in which the institute provides support and resources to their needs.
  • Traditional Housing: It is a classic college residential program in which 11 halls, which are available for students of any year. Rooms with singles settings, doubles, and quads settings are available.
  • Co-ops: They come under the Oberlin Student Cooperative Association, a type of non- profit student-run organization, where students take the responsibility of cooking, cleaning and financial planning of the house, nearly 200 students lives in these houses.
  • Village Housing: This program is for a fourth-year student, who wants to experience post-college life under college maintained property.
  • Program Houses: These are provided for a student who shares a common interest, background, culture, and language, facilitating them to live together. 10 Program houses are given including houses based on language(French, Russian, German, Spanish), cultural and identity-based houses (Hebrew Heritage, Afrikan Heritage, Asia, Third World House, Women and Trans Collective).
  • Theme Living: It is for students who want singular, individual housing experiences. It includes the Brotherhood wing(creating an equal society for everyone), EARTH wing( Work to bring down carbon footprint) and the Sci-Fi wing, etc

Programs

Oberlin College has two main institute divisions, one for the College of Arts & Sciences and the other of Music Conservatory. A number of programs are offered by each one of them.

Programs offered by the college of arts and sciences, mainly include the following courses in the fields of natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, and mathematics:

  • A five-year dual degree program for BA and BM degrees
  • A four-year program for the BA degree.

Also, a number of programs in the fields of drama & instrumentation, music, and artistry, are offered by the Conservatory of Music, which includes:

  • Two-year programs for Performance or artistic diploma.
  • A four-year program for the BM degree.
  • The five-year dual degree program for both BA and BM degrees.

College also offers admission in a number of postgraduate level courses. The famous master’s programs provided by the Oberlin College are Master of Contemporary Chamber Music (MCCM), Master of Music (conducting, performance on historical instruments, opera theatre, MM) and the Master of Music in Historical Performance (MM).

Application Process

Application Portal: Oberlin’s College accepts international students through a Common Application or the Coalition Application. The student can fill and submit the common application form, after fulfilling the minimum academic and eligibility requirements of the intended course of study.

Application Deadline: January 15 for regular admissions.

Admission Requirements: Following are the requirements for admission in the Oberlin College:

  • Completed Common Application or Coalition Application form
  • A Personal essay.
  • Official Transcript of grades, exams, and courses pursued by the student.
  • 2 teacher evaluation by the teachers of academic subjects
  • International Certification of Finances Form
  • Interviews from Initial View or Vericant(optional)
  • Standardized Test Scores(SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IELTS).

Scholarships and Financial Aids

Oberlin College offers scholarships and financial aid to nearly half of the international students, which take admission to the institute, each year. Applicants requesting a scholarship must indicate their need for financial aid, in their scholarship application.

Oberlin College provides different kinds of financial aid including scholarships, loans and student employment to international students, which are as follows:

Scholarships:

  • The Eduardo Mondlane Scholarship: An amount equivalent to the total tuition fee of four years is provided, which is given only to a citizen of a sub-Saharan African country. A student does not need to submit any other application, the are auto-considered for this through regular admission. It is a merit-based scholarship.
  • Edwin O. Reischauer Scholarship: In this, an amount equivalent to the tuition & fees for four-year is provided to any student having Japanese Citizenship. There is no need to fill any application for this.
  • Yakubu Saaka Memorial Fund: Award equivalent to 10,000 USD for four years, is provided to an excellent academic record-holding student of African origin.

Loans:

  • Global Student Loan Corporation for International students.
  • The Leo S. Rowe Pan American Fund: Latin American and Caribbean country’s student can apply for this.
  • USA Funds: Only for USA green cardholders.

Work While You Study

Students with F-1 visas are allowed to work on-campus, under the work-study program of Oberlin College. No student, without any permission in their first year, is allowed to work while school is in session. A minimum of 20 hours per week is allowed, which can further be extended to full time when the College/School is not in session.

Students who work full-time, on-campus, can get temporary-off from college to gain off-campus work experience, through the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) program.

Alumni Network

Oberlin College has its own Alumni Association Network, which connects any former student of Oberlin College and conservatory, fellow alumni, and current students. This provides many benefits to the alumni of Oberlin College and provides a way to connect them with the current students of the college.

Every year, Oberlin’s Alumni Association Members celebrate the reunion, where each alumnus, enjoys facilities of college and discounts at Oberlin theatre, along with many other events, including a special discount at Wyndham Group of hotels and The Hotel of Oberlin worldwide!

    PROMISING PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES AT OBERLIN COLLEGE AND CONSERVATORY

    After I decided to pursue my undergraduate studies from the USA, I did a lot of research. I had selected this college as it naturally allowed me to follow my passion. I had applied to this college through an online common application form along with an essay. There was no application fee for the form. I had obtained a GPA of 8 in high-school.


    Course Curriculum - 

    My subject provided me with an introduction to kinds of mathematical and quantitative thinking for the contemporary world. As a technical and cultural field of study, the coursework ranges from introductory level math to applied math to statics and operation research. The courses included were- calculus, discrete mathematics, and statistics.
