The University of Arkansas is a public university situated in Pine Bluff. The University was intended to a historically black college initially authorized in 1871. It was built after the American Civil War to serve the blacks primarily. In 1927, it tied up with the University of Arkansas and became what it is known today.

UA is currently the largest and oldest HBCU in Arkansas. It is also the most reputed research University in the field of aquaculture with an approx. worth of 1.2 billion in the whole delta region. The university had an endowment of 3.9 million USD in 2019 serving higher education for students to study in the USA.

Programs, Campus, and Residence

Programs

There are mainly undergraduate and graduate degree programs at UA available here with a combination of majors and minors chosen by students from an array of options. 

Majors like Business and Management are studied by most with around 12% of the population opting for it while Biology and Medicine come second with 11%. 

Subjects like elementary education, bioscience, agriculture, nutrition, fisheries, economics, management, marketing, financing, English, music, mathematics, nursing, etc. are some of the majors. 

Many major subjects are included in minors as well with subjects like psychology, philosophy, sociology, mathematics, accounting, political science, statistics, wellness, etc as minor subjects.

Campus

The campus is large and vivid with hi-tech classrooms, libraries, student lounges, etc. Important sites include:

  • John Brown Watson Memorial Library provides support and information to students and fellow researchers. The staff here organize, store, preserve and provide information to students whenever asked for. This is an important piece on the campus which acts as a crucial resource. The library has an extensive collection of prints and e-books to support all kinds of research taking place in the University. 
  • University Museum & Cultural Center, situated in Childress Hall. This a public museum, which means it’s open to all. The L.A. Davis Historical Collection has a rich heritage from the last 140 years and more like photographs, catalogs, yearbooks, letters, artifacts, portraits and other ephemera that document the lives and culture of African-Americans. Self-guided tours are available anytime, while guided tours are available to a group of 10 visitors or more.
     

Residence

Around 55% of students live on-campus residentials. There is an on-campus residential and dining option available. One can choose from 7 different halls given the fact you are eligible for it. 

  • Douglas Hall, constructed in 1939 and named after Mrs. Edna Douglas. The only African American woman in the Board of Directors. Around 70 only male upper-class students reside here.
  • Delta Housing Complex is a luxurious suite-style housing with 104 single and 140 double rooms. It is only for upper-class and freshman Johnny B. Johnson a female.
  • Harrold Complex, built-in 1964 Harrold Complex has four halls. Johnson, Copeland, for freshmen males while Fischer, Stevens for freshmen females. With a capacity of 500.
  • Hunt Hall, was constructed in the year 1955. It is housing for upper-class males 
  • Johnny B. Johnson, with a capacity of 285 students. This is a coed hall for the upper-class. It was built in 1991, in honor of Dr. Johnny B. Johnson, former Chancellor of the University of Arkansas. It is reserved for students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Lewis Hall has 100 students only for upper-class males.
  • Delta Annex resides 144 female students

Admission Process

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff offers admission to students in various undergraduate and graduate programs to study in the USA. Admissions at Arkansas are on a rolling basis. International Students have to fulfill some additional requirements to be eligible for admission:

  1. Certified official copies of all the students’ academic records, with an English translation of these documents. 
  2. English Proficiency Test scores made on the TOEFL, ESL and/or IELTS. A minimum TOEFL score of 525 
  3. Test Scores of SAT/ ACT
  4. Certified documents (Affidavit of Support, Financial Statement, Form I-134 (U.S. Affidavit of Support)
  5. Bank(s) statement or other financial institution(s) providing evidence of financial capability. 
  6. Immunization Records (TB test screening, MMR shot records) must be submitted. 

Cost of Attendance

Tuition fees for international students vary hugely on the degree you opt for. While boarding and meal can range from 8,450 USD to 9,000 USD. Other costs are calculated approximately trying to be as perfect as possible. Though it is always advisable to calculate little more to stay on a safer side in case any unaccounted events show up.

Financial Aids and Scholarship

The University of Arkansas offers financial aid to its students in the form of scholarships, grants, and loans. The university offers a number of scholarships, they are an aid to help talented and dedicated students to pursue their studies with a little less stress on the financial side. 

Students can also look for educational loans to finance their further studies. These scholarships also encourage students to excel. 

  • Chancellor’s Scholarship: 16,500 USD Per Year 
    • First-time entering freshman
    • Minimum grade point average of 3.75
    • A minimum composite ACT score of 28 or SAT score of 1310
    • Submit an essay on the “importance of HBCUs and why you are choosing to attend UAPB.” 
  • University Scholarship: 12,000 USD per year 
    • First-time entering freshman 
    • Minimum grade point average of 3.50 
    • A minimum composite ACT score of 23 or 
    • SAT score of 1130 
  • Dean’s Scholarship: 5,000 USD per year 
    • First-time entering freshman 
    • Minimum grade point average of 3.25 
    • A minimum composite ACT score of 21 or 
    • SAT score of 1060
