Illinois Dominican University (DU) is a private, non-profit institution in River Forest, Illinois. This Roman Catholic University offers courses for international students from over 14 different nations including Saudi Arabia, China, Mexico, Britain, and a few other countries from far distant places. Back in 1901 founded as Saint Clara College, it was later renamed as Rosary College and now it’s called Dominican University since 1997.

The university offers Bachelor, Graduate, Ph.D. and certification programs with a great learning platform by managing classroom strength as low as 16 and an impressive student to faculty ratio of 11:1. DU Programs, Campus, and Accommodation

Programs

DU has an extensive list of course types starting with majors and all way up to accelerated programs. It’s also one of the few universities to offer a Post-Baccalaureate program in the midwest. Graduate aspirants are offered with more than 25 different programs to choose from. Some of the popular degree programs are – Accounting, Criminology, Informatics, Political science, Management, Graphic Design

  • Certificate in Nutrition and dietetics
  • Individualized supervised practice pathway
  • Premedical: bachelor of medical sciences

Each course offered has its own set of requirements and enrolled students have their department under which they study. The course comes along with their internship opportunities.

Campus

Spread around in a 37 acres wide central campus in River Forest, the university offers campus classes in other places of Chicago as well, and even online. Illinois Dominican University includes Rebecca Crown Library that has subscribed to over 30,000 journals for research purposes. Students are also provided with several group study rooms and cyber café.

Illinois Dominician Campus

The Illinois campus includes- language learning centers, computer technology centers, art galleries, auditoriums, recital halls, and bookstores that provide various advisory and student development programs like Academic Advising, Career Development, transition program, and leadership development. The university also provides Student Services for its international population.

Traveling within the campus is easy with Dominican’s shuttle service, which runs Monday through Friday evenings. Furthermore, every campus is accessible via public transports. 

Quickfact: Other Dominican locations are the university center of Lake County which offers graduate courses, Priory campus and Triton College with bachelor programs.

Accommodation

For an international student living on campus will come with added benefits like getting hands-on experience to the American culture. Whether it’s about on-campus activities or getting adjusted to the new place quicker, DU provides a home-like living environment for its residents from various parts of the world. Student housing options at the Dominican University incorporates both dorm and suite type rooms- 

  • New students will have to apply for housing by paying a deposit of 200 USD.
  • A freshman is allotted Coughlin Hall which has double occupancy. It can hold up 150 first-year students.
  • Murray Hall - opened on account of 100 years of DU. It has double rooms and suites (which are allocated only upon meeting a few prerequisites).
  • Power/Mazzucchelli halls are mainly for sophomores and can nearly accommodate 150 students, with options like single and triple rooms.
  • All the halls come with common amenities like wireless internet access, desks and chairs, closets, TVs in lounges and many more.

Application fee: All international candidates are required to pay a non- refundable application fee of 100 USD

When to Apply: DU accepts applications for fall and spring semesters till June 1st and November 1st respectively. The international student’s application walk-through is below.

Scholarship and Financial Aid

Studying at Illinois Dominican University can be costlier for international students but is backed up with decent amounts of financial aid to study in the US. The university offers several scholarships – 

  • Merit scholarship: Freshman and international students are eligible for this scholarship on meeting certain academic requirements. The scholarship award ranges between 10,000 USD and 20,000 USD.
  • Barbantini family scholarship: students induced to learn Italian can apply for this scholarship and can avail annual benefits of around 5,000 USD. Students are also expected to meet a 3.00/4.00 GPA.
