Most commonly referred to as Sewanee, the University of the South is a small liberal arts college in Sewanee, TN, offering undergraduate and graduate programs to students who want to study in the USA. The university is the only institution of higher education in the nation that is owned by the dioceses of the Episcopal Church.

The university was established in 1857 and has three colleges and schools- the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Letters and School of Theology. With a campus spread over 13,000 acres of land, the Sewanee campus is one of the nation’s largest campuses.

The school is known for producing scholars with 26 Rhodes Scholars, 48 Watson Fellows, 34 NCAA Postgraduate Scholars, and dozens of Fulbright Scholars. Sewanee has over 200 endowed scholarship programs to help students in financing their education at the university.

The university has a total enrollment of 1,768 students with 79 international students from 26 countries in the world. Around 448 first-year students enrolled in the fall of 2019.

Sewanee University of the South Programs

Sewanee University of the South offers undergraduate and graduate programs to students. Sewanee offers 37 majors, 43 minors, 15 special programs, and pre-professional programs in business, health/medicine, education, engineering, and law.

Some of the majors offered at the university are- Women and Gender Studies, Spanish, Russian, Psychology, Physics, Neuroscience, Medieval Studies, Mathematics, International & Global Studies.

Some of the minors offered at the university are- Art, Biochemistry, Classical Languages, Dance, Education, Environmental Studies, Film Studies, Humanities, Politics, Theatre Arts, etc.

Graduate programs are offered by the two schools of the University- School of Letters & School of Theology. Graduate degrees offered by the university include MA English, MFA Creative Writing, Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in theological disciplines.

The campus of the Sewanee University of the South is located in Sewanee, Tennessee, USA. The campus is spread over an area of 13,000 acres. The campus offers various facilities for its students like living, dining and playing facilities. Sewanee University of the South Residence

With 98% of students staying on campus, Sewanee University offers on-campus housing options with several residence halls and theme houses. All rooms are furnished with a twin-sized bed, desk and chair, dresser, and closet space for each student.

  • Residence Halls- There are 19 residence halls with 15 co-ed halls, two men’s halls, and two female halls. These halls provide single, double and triple sharing rooms to the students. Some of the halls of the University are-
    • Quintard Hall housing around 116 upperclassmen.
    • Cleveland Hall housing 60 students.
    • Tuckaway Hall housing 60 students.
    • Smith Hall housing 90 students.
  • Themes Houses- The university also offers smaller theme houses for sophomore, junior, and senior students. The theme houses occupancy is limited ranging from 5-1 students. These houses offer a more independent style of living with a full kitchen and living space in each house.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

The Sewanee University of the South offers several scholarship options that include not only academic scholarships but also need-based financial aid to both domestic and international students on an F-1 visa to the USA. Around 98% of first-year students in August 2018 received Sewanee academic scholarships or need-based scholarships.

Few of the financial aid options offered to the students include:

Academic Scholarships: International applicants admitted to the university are automatically considered for the academic scholarship after filling their Common Application. The Sewanee University of the South offers various academic scholarships to its students. Some of the academic scholarships offered by the university are:

  • Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship: This scholarship covers the full tuition, fees, room, and board annually. Only one such scholarship is awarded per year.
  • Benedict Scholarship: Students are provided full tuition, fees, room, and board annually. Three Benedict Scholarships are awarded annually.
  • Wilkins Scholarship: Students will get 26,000 USD annually.
  • EQB Award: Students will get scholarships ranging from 5,000 USD-25,000 USD annually in this award.
  • Georgia4 Scholarship: 4,000 USD annually–awarded to all applicants admitted from Georgia.

Need-Based Financial Aid- International applicants who wish to be considered for financial aid will have to apply for it through the International Student Financial Aid Application(ISFAA) or should create CSS Profile. The eligibility of the candidates is decided based on the financial information of the family provided by the applicant in his Financial Aid Application and CSS profile. Need-based financial aid award ranges from 5,000 USD up to full tuition, room, board, and fees.

International students can also look for various other financial aid options such as international scholarships, education loans, student employment, etc. to finance their studies in the USA at Sewanee University of the South.
