Syracuse University Eligibility Requirements for Indian Students

Syracuse University sets school-level academic floors alongside common English proficiency minimums. All figures below are institutional minimums, so individual programs may set higher bars.

Syracuse University Undergraduate Eligibility

  • Class XII completion: Indian CBSE, ISC, or State Board with roughly 75% or higher recommended.
  • English medium of instruction: official transcripts and marksheets in English or with certified translation.
  • SAT or ACT: optional for Fall 2027 and Spring 2028 admission.
  • British curriculum: IGCSE plus at least one additional year of education; BTEC is not accepted.

Syracuse University Graduate Eligibility

  • Four-year Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university with a strong record (average ECS admit GPA is 3.3 on 4.0, roughly 75%+ in Indian marks).
  • Some programs also require a prior Master’s, listed on the individual program page.
  • Prerequisite coursework may apply for ECS Master’s (Computer Science expects programming and discrete math background).

Syracuse University English Test Waivers for Indian Students

Indian applicants do not automatically qualify for an English test waiver, since India is not on Syracuse’s exempt-country list. However, a waiver may apply if you meet any of these:

  • Undergraduate: attended a US secondary school in person for Grades 10 to 12.
  • Transfer UG: completed 24+ credits at a US college with 3.0+ GPA.
  • Graduate (ECS): completed at least one year at a higher-education institution in the US, UK, Canada, or Australia, or an advanced degree from an accredited US institution.

If none of these apply, Indian applicants should submit a TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or PTE score. Medium-of-instruction letters from Indian universities are not accepted as a substitute.

Syracuse University PG Programs and English Scores

Graduate programs at Syracuse University sit across ten schools, with the College of Engineering and Computer Science, the Whitman School, and the iSchool drawing the largest share of Indian students. Base tuition runs at USD 2,086 per credit (around ₹ 2.00 Lakhs), which works out to roughly USD 37,548 (around ₹ 35.96 Lakhs) for a full-time Fall + Spring load of 18 credits. See the full program catalogue for the detailed fee breakdown per program.

The GRE is optional for both Spring 2027 and Fall 2027 ECS applications, so Indian applicants may skip it unless they want to strengthen their profile for merit aid. Submitting a strong quantitative score can improve funding chances but is not gating admission.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Syracuse University international graduate page for your chosen program before applying.

Syracuse University Undergraduate Programs

Syracuse University admits first-year international students into 13 schools and colleges through a shared application. Indian applicants typically apply to the College of Arts and Sciences, the Whitman School, the S.I. Newhouse School, or the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Undergraduate base tuition for 2026 to 2027 is USD 69,180 (around ₹ 66.25 Lakhs) per year.

Syracuse University Whitman MBA Admissions

The Whitman School’s Full-Time MBA is a two-year, STEM-designated program that draws a sizeable Indian cohort each August. Whitman does not offer a Spring intake for the Full-Time MBA, so all applicants target Fall.

Syracuse University Whitman MBA Test and Experience Bar

  • GMAT or GRE: strongly recommended but not mandatory. Entering class average GMAT is 650 (GMAT Focus 615).
  • GMAT 640+, GMAT Focus 595+, or GRE 320+ triggers an automatic application fee waiver.
  • English scores: TOEFL iBT 100, IELTS 7.0, Duolingo 130.
  • Work experience: preferred but not required. Strong academic profiles without work experience are considered.
  • Application fee: USD 75 (around ₹ 7,182), waived if you hit the score threshold.

Insider note: A GMAT of 640 or higher unlocks both the application fee waiver and a stronger merit-scholarship review at Whitman. Indian candidates targeting funding should aim for this bar rather than treat GMAT as fully optional.

Compare Whitman’s rounds against other top USA MBA programs before locking in a round.

Syracuse University PhD Admissions

PhD admissions at Syracuse University are handled by individual departments rather than a central graduate office. The College of Engineering and Computer Science, the Maxwell School, and Arts and Sciences run the largest doctoral cohorts.

Syracuse University PhD Deadlines and Fee

  • ECS PhD Fall 2027 deadline: 15 December 2026 for best funding consideration.
  • Arts and Sciences and Maxwell: most departments hold to a mid-December to mid-January window; check the department page.
  • Application fee: USD 75 (around ₹ 7,182) per program.

Syracuse University PhD Funding for Indian Students

Most admitted PhD students at Syracuse receive a funding package that covers full tuition plus a teaching or research assistantship stipend. Stipend levels vary by department and academic year. Confirm the current stipend and any external fellowships on the department’s PhD page before applying.

Planning note: Ask the ECS graduate coordinator (grad@syr.edu) whether a specific research group has open funded seats before you file. A prior email conversation with a faculty advisor often signals funded intent more clearly than the application form.

Syracuse University Application Process

The process differs slightly between undergraduate and graduate applicants, but both run online. Indian applicants should plan for roughly 8 to 10 weeks between filing and a decision, plus visa time.

Syracuse University Undergraduate Application Steps

  1. Create a Common Application or Coalition (powered by Scoir) account. The Common App cycle for Fall 2027 opened on 1 August 2026.
  2. Complete the Syracuse-specific writing supplement and select your first-choice college.
  3. Pay the application fee of USD 85 (around ₹ 8,140) on the Common Application portal, or request a counselor-verified fee waiver.
  4. Send official Class XII marksheets, one academic recommendation, and English test scores directly from the testing service.
  5. Complete the Visa and Financial Support Information Form once admitted.

Syracuse University Graduate Application Steps

  1. Open the Slate application on the individual school page (ECS, iSchool, Whitman, and so on).
  2. Upload transcripts, a resume or CV, statement of purpose, and 2 to 3 letters of recommendation.
  3. Pay the application fee of USD 75 (around ₹ 7,182) per program at the Syracuse Slate portal.
  4. Arrange TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or PTE scores to reach Syracuse (code 2823 for TOEFL).
  5. Track your application in the Slate self-service portal until a decision is issued.

Syracuse University Decision Timeline

  • UG Early Decision I: notification in mid-December.
  • UG Early Decision II: notification in mid-February.
  • UG Regular Decision: notifications from mid-March, rolling weekly.
  • Graduate: most decisions arrive 6 to 10 weeks after submission, on a rolling basis after each round.

Syracuse University Documents Required for Indian Applicants

Syracuse University asks for a standard US-style document set. Prepare these well before the deadline, since transcripts and English scores often take 2 to 3 weeks to arrive from testing services.

  • Valid Indian passport, at least six months beyond expected US arrival.
  • Official Class X and Class XII marksheets for UG applicants, sealed and certified.
  • Official Bachelor’s degree certificate and consolidated marksheets for graduate applicants.
  • English translation of any document not originally in English.
  • Statement of Purpose or personal essay covering academic goals and fit with Syracuse.
  • Letters of Recommendation: one academic reference for UG, two to three for graduate programs.
  • Resume or CV for graduate applicants, especially Whitman MBA and iSchool.
  • English test score report sent directly by the testing service.
  • Bank statement or sponsor letter showing at least USD 96,747 (around ₹ 92.64 Lakhs) for the first year, needed for the I-20.
  • Digital passport-style photo for the Slate profile.
  • GMAT or GRE score report if applying to Whitman MBA and choosing to submit.

Syracuse University Acceptance Rate

Syracuse University does not publish a distinct international acceptance rate. Based on published Common Data Set patterns, its overall first-year admit rate sits at around 40 to 50%, which places it in the moderately selective band among US private universities.

Syracuse University Acceptance Rate by Level

Undergraduate admission is more competitive than most graduate programs at Syracuse. The Newhouse School and the S.I. Newhouse Communications programs are typically the tightest, while ECS Master’s programs run higher admit rates thanks to broader capacity.

How Selective Is Syracuse University for Indian Students?

Indian applicants tend to fare well when they hit the recommended English band (IELTS 6.5+ for most schools) and back their transcript with clear program fit. Whitman MBA remains the most selective graduate route for Indian candidates, followed by Newhouse Communications. Explore Syracuse’s detailed ranking band to benchmark it against your other target schools.

Reality check: A stronger acceptance chance at Syracuse comes from writing a Syracuse-specific supplement that names actual faculty, labs, or clubs, not from a generic essay recycled across the Common App list.

USA F-1 Student Visa Process for Syracuse University Applicants

Admitted Indian students at Syracuse University apply for the F-1 student visa after receiving the I-20 from the Slutzker Center for International Services. The end-to-end visa journey typically takes 6 to 10 weeks, so start once you have your admission letter and financial documents ready. See the US student visa guide for international students for a full walkthrough.

The core steps: pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around ₹ 33,516), complete the DS-160 form, book a visa interview slot at a US Consulate in India, and carry your I-20, admission letter, bank statements, and Syracuse SEVIS receipt to the interview. Post-arrival, register with the Center for International Services on campus within 30 days for SEVIS activation. Indian students at Syracuse are eligible for 12 months of OPT after graduation, extending to 36 months total for STEM-designated programs such as MS Computer Science and the Whitman MBA.

2026 update: Book your visa interview as soon as you get the I-20, since Indian consulate slots for a Fall 2027 start typically tighten between March and June 2027. Missing the visa slot is a common reason Indian admits defer to Spring 2028.

Syracuse University Admissions Tips and Checklist

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Syracuse University, mixing insight on positioning with a timeline that maps to the Fall 2027 cycle.

  • Apply in the first round: Whitman’s 15 November priority round and Common App Early Decision I give the strongest funding and visa runway.
  • Skip the SAT unless it helps: Syracuse remains test-optional through Spring 2028, so submit only if your score sits above the 75th percentile band.
  • Write a program-specific supplement: name a Syracuse professor, lab, or centre and connect it to your goals.
  • Send transcripts early: Indian institutional transcripts can take 3 to 4 weeks. Request them by 1 October 2026 for a November deadline.
  • Book English tests by mid-October 2026: IELTS and TOEFL slots fill up in metros. Retake once if scores fall short of the college minimum.
  • Line up financial proof: keep a bank statement showing USD 96,747 (around ₹ 92.64 Lakhs) in liquid funds ready for the I-20 request.
  • Pay the application fee by portal: USD 85 (around ₹ 8,140) for UG or USD 75 (around ₹ 7,182) per graduate program.
  • Track decisions weekly: UG Regular Decision notifications release in weekly batches from mid-March. Set up email alerts on the Syracuse portal.

Syracuse University admissions reward Indian applicants who file early, align their supplement to a specific school, and hit the English band for their target college. The Fall 2027 window is open now, with the Whitman MBA priority round on 15 November 2026 and undergraduate Early Decision I on 1 November 2026 setting the immediate action points.

Scholarship

  • Syracuse University does provide scholarships to selected students, but I wasn't fortunate enough to receive one.
  • Some of my batchmates did receive the scholarship, which was around $20000.
  • Every year approx 50% of students receive a scholarship. The amount varies for each student depending on their profile. Also, the scholarship depends on the course that you are accepted into. Usually 50% of computer science students receive scholarships.

Overview

I chose this university because the university excels in providing a quality student experience. It also had professors with incredible backgrounds and experience. The infrastructure and maintenance helped me believe in the university's seriousness in delivering a healthy environment to students. On top of all that, the university provided me with a huge scholarship that aided my financial constraints.

For the admission, I gave the GRE exam and TOEFL. I have written a Statement of Purpose and have taken letters of Recommendations from three of the professors who were my mentors and educational advisor during my undergraduate.

Scholarship

Scholarships are based on merit. The merit includes papers that we have published, our undergraduate scores, and projects that we have done during and after undergraduation. Work experience also impacts and most importantly how one presents all these things.
