VISA & Work Study

  • An I-20 is a form that U.S. schools issue to international students to indicate they have met all admission requirements to enter that school. If students live outside the U.S., they will need to take the Form I-20 to the nearest U.S. Consulate in their country, along with a valid passport, TOEFL score, financial support documents, and school transcripts, to obtain an F-1 Student visa. It is important to remember to sign their I-20 prior to entering the United States.
  • To allow time to overcome any unforeseen problems that might arise, students are encouraged to apply for their visas several weeks before they plan to travel. Students may not be issued a visa more than 120 days before the registration date noted on the I-20.

Work Study

  • Students who file the FAFSA by December 1, indicate on the FAFSA that they are interested in receiving Work-Study funds, and demonstrate financial need through their FAFSA may be eligible for the College Work-Study program.
  • College Work-Study (CWS) subsidizes some student jobs with federal and institutional funds
  • The employing department pays 40% of wages while the College Work-Study Program funds the remaining 60%.

Career and Placement after Course

In the College of Engineering, approximately 10% of undergraduate students and about 60% of graduate students are foreign born. These students represent numerous countries around the world and bring tremendous talent and diversity to the ISU campus and to the workplaces of many employers. About 35% of international students complete a co-op or internship while studying engineering at ISU and many others wish they had the opportunity to experience professional employment in the U.S.
