Goucher College was founded in 1885 as the Woman's College of Baltimore City, Goucher by a group of Methodists led by the influential Rev. John Franklin Goucher. It is a coeducational college with a firm commitment to excellence in liberal arts and sciences education. 

The school is known for its excellent reputation among other colleges in the USA. The college offers top-tier academics, welcoming community, global perspectives, and excellent outcomes in addition to its comprehensive undergraduate liberal arts education and excellent graduate programs. 

Goucher College offers 42 undergraduate programs and 7 graduate programs and 5 professional programs. In their undergraduate programs, students can choose from subjects like – Chemistry, Computer Science, Dance, Biochemistry and molecular biology, History and many more.

Goucher College Campus

Goucher College is one of the two colleges in the United States that mandates a study abroad experience for students either through an internship or a study-abroad experience. Each student is required to fulfill an off-campus learning requirement before graduation.

Goucher College Programs

Goucher offers various programs such as 47 undergraduate programs, 25 majors, 7 masters programs, and 5 professional certificates popular across different fields like Art, Education, Science, and Engineering.

Goucher College also offers online, hybrid, in-person evening classes, dual programs, and low-residency graduate programs in fields such as Education, Fine Arts, and other Professional Studies & Continuing Education. The low-residency programs give graduate students a combined-advantage of in-person and online mode of lectures.

The College also offers 65 student-centered study abroad programs in about 35 countries in Europe, America, Asia, Africa, etc to complement the Goucher College academic mission and overall experience.

Goucher College Campus

Goucher College sits on a 287-acre of land located in the town of Towson. Goucher College Campus is adequately equipped with wireless internet service throughout the campus, Super-fast Fiber-optic Internet connection, unlimited access to over 125 computer workstations, digital art classroom and laboratory with high-tech audio, and video-editing tools.

Some on-campus facilities are laboratories, galleries, open amphitheater, studios, student radio station, eight tennis courts, two gymnasiums, six-lane swimming pool, strength and conditioning center, aerobics room, 10-hole frisbee golf course, and library.

With proximity to Baltimore City and Washington DC, students have the opportunity to complement their academic knowledge with direct experience through research, internships, excursions, and Community-based learning

With over 60 students’ clubs, academic groups, research teams, non-profit community-based learning and leadership organization, and a wide-ranging internship program, the school offers students the opportunity to shape their futures.

Goucher College Housing

Goucher College is a residential campus, where all students are required to live on-campus as part of the institution’s residency requirement although exceptions exist. Thus, about 95% of students live on campus.

The on-campus residence includes seven residence halls, numerous on-campus apartments, and five special interest houses.

Special interest houses are open to new and returning students but the on-campus apartment is only for non-freshman who have completed a minimum of 45 credit with a cumulative GPA of 2.5

All residence halls on campus are smoke-free and students are permitted to identify as transgender during their housing application.

Facilities in the residence halls include common room or lounge, Kitchens fitted with stove, refrigerator, and sink, study areas, vending machines, and card-operated laundry facilities, music practice rooms, and bulletin boards. The students living on campus are required to opt for the mandatory meal plan.

Each student room in the residence hall is furnished with a bed, dresser, overhead lighting, desk, chair, and Venetian blinds

Academic Requirements

In addition to the online application, other admission requirements are:

  • Academic Transcripts
  • Test Scores (Praxis CORE, ACT, GRE, or SAT) - optional
  • The accepted English language test scores are a minimum of 7.0 for IELTS and 80 for TOEFL.
  • Essay
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A signed statement of a sponsor's willingness to financially support the applicant’s academic program
  • An official bank statement or letter showing funds to support the completion of a degree program
  • International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA) showing at least 30,000 USD per year is required.
  • A sealed, official course-by-course evaluation is required for graduate admission if the applicant's undergraduate education was completed outside of the United States.
  • Applicants are advised to check the program website for program-specific requirements.
  • Exemptions from English language requirements are applicants who had their previous education from a U.S. based institution or whose primary language of instruction was English.

Goucher College Scholarships and Financial Aids

International students are eligible for both Goucher's merit scholarships and institutional need-based grant aid. 97% of students receive financial aid annually.

Most of the scholarships and financial assistance are automatically awarded. However, for the Fine and Performing Arts scholarship program, a separate application is required. Some of the scholarships available for international students are Merit Scholarships and Dance Scholarship worth 1,000 USD to 5,000 USD per annum.

International students are allowed to work on campus 20 hours a week or less during school sessions and a maximum of 29 hours per week during vacation.

A student can also opt for the scholarships to study in the USA other than the college-specific ones.

Goucher College Notable Alumni

The alumni network of the institution offers events such as business dinner, career fairs, job hunting workshops, and networking receptions. The network through its foundation also supports the tuition of some indigent students through scholarships and financial assistance. 

Some of the notable alumni of the college are Jonah Goldberg (Conservative commentator, and National Review senior editor), Lucé Vela (former First Lady of Puerto Rico), John A. Olszewski, Jr. (Delegate to the Maryland General Assembly), and Laura Amy Schlitz (American Autor).

Goucher College organizes on-campus career and jobs fairs every year to connect interested students with employers.

The Goucher Advantage is a Career Education Office that provides students with Self-Knowledge and personal branding, Career Communities, Professional Experience, Career Management, and Alumni & Family connections.

The school’s Career Education Office also provides tools that will help students on graduation such as Goucher Recruit – to search for opportunities, apply for jobs, review the resume, or make an appointment with the career education office.
