Life at SUNY UB as Grad
I think the program is exceptional, full of opportunities to grow professionally. There are many options to pursue research with other departments. In terms of music is the only university in the US with musicians dedicated to contemporary music.
It fulfill my expectations. It covers a wide range of topics that I consider fundamental to become a better professional and be more knowledgeable in the field of music as composer, theorist and teacher.
I took the GRE, TOEFL before coming to the US as part of the requirements to be admitted. And I took the SPEAK at UB.
As a Graduate Student, I don't have exams, all the courses have final projects that can be research papers or music compositions. As a TA I think that the exams for undergraduate are pretty well organized. They know from the beginning of each semester when they have the finals.
The faculty is really helpful and willing to answer and hide through the problems that may come. They keep fluent and resourceful communication. They show interest in new proposals to enrich the department's offerings.
The fees cover the use of different facilities like technology, gymnasium, common areas, health insurance for students. In my case I also have to pay for international students fees.
I live off campus in a shared apartment that is close enough to the campus and where I have access to public transport. It's the best solution because is cheaper and lets me be closer to activities outside the university.
The job opportunities are fair enough. I think it could be improved the number of courses offered by the department. But that depends on how the budget is distributed, which is beyond the department's decision.
They offer positions as TA or GA where you have to be as assistant of undergraduates courses. The stipend is good enough to pay bills and carry on with your life. It could be improved to be able to have other activities besides the university. But is not bad.
Monthly Expense : $500 - $1500
