TRU Eligibility for Indian Students
TRU is an access-oriented university, meaning it admits most applicants who meet the stated academic and English thresholds. Indian applicants clear two gates: an academic minimum tied to the program level, and one accepted English proficiency test. TRU sets institution-wide floors, but individual programs (Nursing, MBA, MSc Data Science) layer on higher cutoffs published on their own official admission requirements page.
TRU UG Eligibility Basics
- Academic minimum: Class XII completion from CBSE, ICSE or a State Board, with strong marks in required subjects (Math for Computing Science, Biology for Nursing).
- Age: Applicants must be at least 17 years old at intake.
- Direct-entry English scores: IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 88 (no section below 20), PTE 58 (no band below 55), Duolingo 125 (no sub-score below 115), or CAEL 70.
- Conditional entry: Applicants short on English can enter through the EAP (English for Academic Purposes) pathway at Levels 4 or 5 before starting the main program.
TRU PG Eligibility Basics
- Academic minimum: A three or four-year bachelor’s degree with a B average (GPA 3.0 on 4.33) in the last 60 credits.
- Program-specific floors: MBA and GDBA need IELTS 7.0 (no band below 6.5); MSc Data Science, MEEM, and PBD Applied Data Science accept IELTS 6.5.
- Duolingo: Not accepted for any master’s program at TRU. Use IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, or CAEL instead.
- MSc Data Science: Requires Statistics and Computing Science undergraduate coursework, such as MATH 2110, STAT 2000 and COMP 1231 or equivalents.
TRU does not offer a blanket MOI (Medium of Instruction) waiver for Indian applicants, so plan to submit an English test score in most cases. Applicants who completed their bachelor’s fully in English at a recognised institution can request a case-by-case exemption; this is not guaranteed.
TRU PG Programs and English Scores for Indian Applicants
The Faculty of Adventure, Culinary Arts and Tourism, the Gaglardi School of Business, and the Faculty of Science host most master’s admits from India. All PG programs need a bachelor’s with a B average; English floors vary. Base tuition sits at CAD 875 per credit (around INR 60,323) for coursework master’s, with program totals below drawn from cached tuition data and each program’s own official page. Fee breakdowns by course sit on the course-wise fees breakdown page.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official TRU page for your chosen program before applying.
Thompson Rivers University UG Programs for Indian Students
TRU’s undergraduate lineup runs on a credit-based system: most bachelor’s programs need 120 credits over 4 years, with international tuition at CAD 875 per credit (around INR 60,323). Full-degree tuition for a standard 120-credit bachelor’s totals about CAD 104,952 (INR 72.35 Lakhs) across four years before scholarships. Indian applicants come in with Class XII marksheets translated to TRU’s admission grid.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor of Science, Computing Science (Major) | 4 years | Class XII with Mathematics, minimum around 65 percent aggregate | IELTS 6.5, no band below 6.0 |
| Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) | 4 years | Class XII, minimum around 65 percent aggregate | IELTS 6.5, no band below 6.0 |

Applicants short on English can start with the EAP (English for Academic Purposes) pathway before joining the main degree. Direct-entry candidates should confirm subject prerequisites on the program page since Nursing, Engineering Transfer, and Computing Science layer on specific Class XII subject rules.
TRU MBA Admission Requirements
TRU’s on-campus MBA at the Gaglardi School of Business is the main route for Indian applicants. The Open Learning MBA (distance) is restricted to eligible students residing in Canada, so it is not a viable choice for someone applying from India. Total tuition for the on-campus MBA sits at around CAD 57,235 (INR 39.46 Lakhs) across the two-year program.
MBA Eligibility at TRU
- Undergraduate degree: Three or four-year bachelor’s in any discipline.
- Academic minimum: B average (GPA 3.0 on 4.33 scale) in the last 60 credits.
- Work experience: Beneficial but not mandatory for the full-time on-campus MBA.
- GMAT or GRE: Not required by default. The MBA committee may request a GMAT score if an application has academic deficiencies.
- English: IELTS 7.0 with no band below 6.5, or TOEFL iBT 94, or PTE 68.
TRU MBA Deadlines and Intakes
The on-campus MBA takes September and January starts. September intake closes 1 May 2027 and January intake closes 1 October 2026. The May intake is limited to the online Open Learning MBA, which is closed to Indian residents. There is no formal interview stage — TRU decides on documents alone, so a strong statement of purpose carries weight.
Insider note: Applicants with a three-year Indian bachelor’s often ask if their degree is accepted. TRU explicitly accepts three-year undergraduate degrees for MBA entry, provided the last 60 credits carry a B average.
Thompson Rivers University Application Process
The full application takes 30 to 45 minutes if documents are ready. Undergraduate and select PG applications route through EducationPlannerBC (EPBC), the BC-wide platform TRU uses. Graduate coursework master’s like MSc Data Science and PBD Applied Data Science apply direct through TRU’s international graduate portal.
- Create an account on the EducationPlannerBC portal or the TRU direct graduate portal (for research and thesis-track programs).
- Pay the application fee of CAD 100 (around INR 6,894) — non-refundable, credit card only.
- Upload academic documents: Class XII marksheet, transitional certificate, bachelor’s transcripts and degree, plus a certified English translation for any non-English document.
- Upload the English proficiency scorecard (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, CAEL for PG; add Duolingo for UG).
- Upload program-specific extras: statement of purpose for master’s, two academic or professional references, an updated CV, and proof of prerequisite coursework for MSc Data Science.
- Submit and track status through the EPBC dashboard or TRU international portal.
TRU Admission Decision Timeline
TRU issues a conditional Letter of Acceptance (LOA) in 4 to 6 weeks for a complete application, and up to 8 weeks during peak windows (December to March). The offer specifies a tuition deposit deadline — typically CAD 6,300 (around INR 43,432) to secure the seat and unlock the study permit letter. Deferrals to the next intake are allowed once, subject to program availability, and must be requested before the deposit deadline.
TRU Documents Required for Indian Applicants
TRU asks for a standard document set, uploaded during the online application. Certified English translations are needed for anything not originally in English. Do not send paper copies unless requested — TRU works from uploads.
- Passport: Colour scan of the biometric page, valid for the full program length.
- Academic transcripts: Class X and Class XII marksheets and passing certificates for UG applicants; complete bachelor’s semester or year mark sheets for PG applicants.
- Degree certificate: Provisional degree accepted if the final is pending.
- English proficiency scorecard: IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Duolingo (UG only) or CAEL.
- Statement of Purpose (SOP): One page for PG; goals, program fit, career plan.
- Letters of Recommendation: Two academic or professional references for master’s programs.
- Updated CV or resume: Required for all PG programs.
- Proof of funds: Bank statement or GIC receipt covering first-year tuition plus CAD 22,895 (around INR 15.78 Lakhs) in living costs. Needed at visa stage, not application.
- Application fee receipt: CAD 100 (around INR 6,894), paid online.
Before you apply: Order two extra sets of attested transcripts from your Indian university. TRU may ask for a sealed hard copy after issuing the LOA, and Indian universities take 3 to 5 weeks to fulfil transcript requests.
Thompson Rivers University Acceptance Rate
TRU does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Third-party estimates place the admit share at around 82%, consistent with the university’s access-oriented admission model — most applicants who clear the published academic and English thresholds receive an offer. This is a document-based decision with no interview stage for standard master’s or bachelor’s programs. See TRU’s ranking band for context on institutional selectivity.
What Drives Rejections at TRU
Applications typically fail on one of three grounds: English score below the direct-entry floor with no EAP pathway selected, missing prerequisite subjects (MSc Data Science and Nursing are strict), or an unattested or incomplete transcript file. Financial documentation is checked at visa stage by IRCC, not by TRU.
Which TRU Programs Are Competitive
Not all TRU programs are equally accessible. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing, MSc Data Science, and PBD Applied Data Science are capped by faculty capacity and close well before the published deadline. If either of these is your target, aim to submit within four weeks of the cycle opening on 1 October 2026.
Insider note: A cleared IELTS 6.5 with a 5.5 in Speaking is still a rejection at direct entry. TRU enforces the sub-band minimum strictly, and applicants who miss it are routed to EAP rather than the main program.
Canada Student Visa Process for Indian TRU Applicants
Indian students headed to TRU apply for a Canadian study permit after receiving the LOA. The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was permanently discontinued in November 2024, so all Indian applicants now file under the regular study permit stream with processing times of 8 to 12 weeks. Applications go through the IRCC online portal along with a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from British Columbia, which TRU arranges after the tuition deposit clears.
Financial proof is the biggest single filing item. IRCC’s minimum living cost threshold for 2026 is CAD 22,895 (around INR 15.78 Lakhs) per year, separate from tuition and travel. Applicants can show this through a bank statement, sponsor letter, or a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from an IRCC-listed Canadian bank. Standard filing documents include the passport, LOA from TRU, tuition receipt, PAL, medical exam report from an IRCC-approved panel physician, biometrics receipt, and a study plan letter.
2026 update: BC introduced a cap on international student permits at each university, so PALs are issued in the order tuition deposits clear. Pay the TRU deposit within 10 days of receiving your LOA to avoid the PAL queue slipping into the next intake.
Tips and Application Checklist for Thompson Rivers University
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at TRU across the last two admission cycles. They cover sequencing and timing rather than repeating documents already listed above.
- Book IELTS 10 weeks before your target deadline — a retake buffer matters at the 6.5 or 7.0 floor.
- Request transcripts 8 weeks in advance from your Indian university since sealed copies can take 3 to 5 weeks to reach you.
- Submit within the first 4 weeks of the cycle opening on 1 October 2026 if you are targeting Nursing, MSc Data Science, or PBD Applied Data Science.
- Apply to two intakes if flexible — Winter 2027 as a backup and Fall 2027 as primary keeps options open.
- Prepare the LOA-to-deposit turnaround: keep CAD 6,300 (around INR 43,432) accessible via international card or wire before applying so you can secure the seat within 10 days of the LOA.
- Line up the GIC account with an IRCC-listed bank as soon as the LOA is in hand — the CAD 22,895 (INR 15.78 Lakhs) GIC drives the study permit filing timeline.
- Write the SOP against the Kamloops context — small campus, applied focus, co-op eligibility. Generic Canada-fit essays underperform TRU’s rubric.
- Check the automatic scholarship trigger: 80 percent+ Class XII with IELTS 6.5 lands the CAD 4,000 (around INR 2.76 Lakhs) Exceptional Student Award automatically at direct UG entry.
Popular Indian-applicant picks stay concentrated in Computing Science, Business, Data Science, and Nursing. TRU keeps its admissions calendar predictable, so submitting early, keeping documents attested, and paying the deposit fast are the three levers that decide whether your intake starts on time. Confirm live status on the TRU international deadlines page before you file.

- Some of the faculty are racist so choose your professor well. Read reviews on them.
Likes
- I really like the teaching faculty, especially the computing science department. The professors are very helpful.
- I also like this one thing about my University they put a lot of focus on the student's mental health whether it be a domestic or an international student.
Dislikes
- The one thing that I dislike is that there are not many jobs on campus for international students except for the co-op positions. There are many opportunities for domestic students comparatively.
Overview
The one particular reason for choosing this University is because it has a tie-up program with a college in India in Chandigarh. Through this program, I was able to complete two years of my Canadian education in India with the same curriculum as Canada. My overall experience at this University has been amazing. I really recommend this University as there are so many things you can find in here. I chose this particular program as it was of my interest and I was able to complete the first two years in India.
Likes
- Practical knowledge valued over theoretical knowledge
- Clean and hygienic campus
- Good faculty while delivering lectures
Dislikes
- Less on-campus accommodation
- Very high competition for on-campus jobs
- Fewer placement records from the campus
Overview
I chose this university as the program schedule was what I really wanted to study; the weather is pretty good compared to other provinces. On-campus classes are more than in other colleges/universities where the study is half online.
Likes
- This Post Baccalaureate course in Supply chain management was available only at TRU and it’s located in British Columbia, an important international hub in logistics and exports. Job opportunities are comparatively higher in this province when compared to other provinces.
- The university is diverse and involves students from different parts of the world. Staff are really supportive and are open to help in whichever way possible. Qualified professors & lecturers and the university is located in a scenic city with lots of explore.
Dislikes
- University tuition fee is really expensive and comparatively fewer jobs in and around Kamloops city. When looked at housing costs, on campus is a good place to live, but again the cost is massive when compared to the amenities available.
Overview
I have completed one year of study and it has indeed been a roller coaster of an experience. There are ups and downs but in the end the focus shouldn’t divert from the goal. There may be days when you may feel lonely but it’s important to remember why you’re there. Focus on your goals, speak to family and friends, work and strive hard to achieve your dreams.

- It was one of the best universities to pursue MBA in British Columbia without a GMAT. As I decided very late to move to Canada I had not planned to take GMAT. This helped me to still pursue MBA from one of the best universities in BC
- Some professors were extremely Knowledgeable. The campus was great. Good exposure to extra curricular activities like basketball games, LEAP, etc. I made good friends, have good relationships with my professors.
Dislikes
- There were no courses that would actually prepare us students for our future jobs. So many software were not included in our courses to prepare us for the job roles in future. In a technologically advanced era, the students could benefit a lot if SQL, Tableau and Python like softwares are taught to us.
Overview
Overall experience was okay, for the fees that I paid to become an MBA graduate I had a lot of expectations regarding learning a lot of things that could actually help me get a job sooner.
Overview
I contacted CareerBrick in Delhi, and they helped me with the admission process. Gave IELTS after studying for 3-4 days from an online platform called Magoosh. The admission process was relatively easy. Got the confirmation from the university in a couple of months, and that's it. Also, I gave my GMAT too, although it isn't a prerequisite for admission at the university.

Overview
I applied with my engineering transcript and IELTS scores for admission with help of an agent from India. It took six months to know a decision from the university's side. I selected this institution because being an engineer this is the only institution that takes non-business graduates for higher studies in programs such as post-baccalaureate diplomas.
Scholarship
I received a TRU diversity scholarship in the first year which was for students with good marks. However international students do NOT receive many scholarships here. Even though I received the scholarship they didn't give it to me in the second year saying that the scholarship was given to everyone because it was some anniversary. Moreover, many students were given the same amount when it was the pandemic and the university was struggling to find more immigrants which makes sense now.
Overview
The course and papers made sense for what I wanted to pursue: Affordable course.
Scholarship

Overview
TRU provides options to work on and off campus. They also have a co-op program where we can gain career related work experience before graduating

Overview
TRU is one of the best experiences anyone can get. For an average student like me, you get more than average rating University which has a good campus and can explore a lot of things in the University from joining clubs to being part of all the activities. One of the other reasons is diversity which is difficult to find in many colleges in Canada but fortunately, TRU will give that opportunity, especially in non-business courses.
Scholarship
No, I didn't receive any scholarship.

Students applying for the M.Sc Environmental Science program of Thompson Rivers University must be graduates of a four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent from an accredited institution with a GPA of 3.3 on a scale of 4.33, in the last 60 credits.
