Reproduction is a biological process by which new offspring are produced by the old ones. Based on a fundamental feature, all animals need to produce. It’s a much-needed process for the survival of all species. Reproduction in animals can occur through two modes: asexual or sexual. Sexual reproduction in animals is a type of reproduction that encompasses a complex life cycle of multicellular eukaryotes like animals. In it, a male and a female partner together create offspring or babies. Here, we will learn more about reproduction in animals, their types, organs, process and answer some sample questions.

Reproduction is the process of reproducing offspring by an organism. All organisms need to produce a new one. It enables & ensures the continuity of the species, generation after the new generation. Reproduction is the main process of life on earth.

Reproduction is a process in which organisms replicate themselves & produce new individuals of the same kind.

Most of animals produces offspring by the mating process. It increases the genetic variability of organisms. The male & female organism has separate reproductive organisms. These are called gonads, they later form gametes together. 

These gametes fuse jointly & then produce a single cell. This single cell is called generation; some animals like snails, slugs, earthworms & some more are called hermaphrodites. These hermaphrodites possess male & women reproductive organs in the same organism. It means that their haploid reproductive cells & body cells are diploid & produced by meiosis.

Reproduction in animals can occur through two modes:

  • Sexual Reproduction
  • Asexual Reproduction

Sexual Reproduction

The male & female animals have different reproductive organs. Their productive parts produced gametes which are fused & form a zygote. The zygote then develops into a new but similar species. The reproduction that is done through the fusion of male & female gametes is called sexual reproduction. In sexual reproduction, the male gametes are produced by testis. These gametes are called sperm on the other side the female gametes are produced by the ovary. These gametes are called ova or eggs.

Stages of Sexual Reproduction

  • Pre-fertilization
  • Fertilization
  • Post fertilization

Pre-fertilization: The first stage of sexual reproduction involves the prior events to fertilization. The two main processes of pre-fertilization are Gamete formation & transformation of gametes. Gametes are the sex cells, they are haploid & are different in males & females. Sperm is the name of the male gamete & the female one is called an ovum or egg. These gametes are formed in a special structure in every organism. The female gamete is immobile so the male one is transferred for fertilization.

Fertilization: When the haploid male & female gametes meet & then fuse, they form a zygote. This zygote is called fertilization or can also be called syngamy. It can occur either inside them or outside. When they occur inside they are called internal fertilization & when they occur outside the body they are called external fertilization

Post-fertilization: The fertilization results in a diploid zygote formation. The zygote divides mitotically & then it gets developed into an embryo, the process is called embryogenesis. In this process, cells are differentiated & modified accordingly. The development of the zygote depends on the organism & also on its life cycle.

Asexual Reproduction

Asexual reproduction is the second mode of reproduction in animals. All the lower species & unicellular microbes use this process to produce new organisms. By this mechanism, a new entity is created without the gamete formation by a single parent. The individuals produced by the process are alike genetically & morphologically. They are found in single-celled species. No fertilization & cells are separated by mitotic division, the separation is very fast.

Types of Asexual Reproduction

  • Binary fission

Binary fission is one of the most common forms of asexual reproduction for all prokaryotes including bacteria. In binary fission, the parent cell goes through mitosis & it grows in size.

  • Budding 

In the budding process, the offspring emerges from the womb of the parent. When it gets mature, it stays bound to its parents & then gets separated from them after getting matured. Then they serve as a separate entity.

  • Fragmentation

When the body of an entity splits into parts, each piece develops into an independent offspring. For this fragmentation is used. It can happen as a result of the harm caused by the predator. It is a natural form of reproduction. In fragmentation, a fractured arm develops into a full organism.

  • Regeneration

Regeneration is another form of fragmentation. It is found mainly in Echinoderms. When a single part of an individual's body, like an arm, gets separated from the body of the parents, it transforms into a different entity.

  • Parthenogenesis

Parthenogenesis is an asexual reproduction method. In this process, the egg forms without being fertilized. Some insects are engaged in this process like ants, aphids, rotifers, wasps, bees.

When females and males are separated, pathogens are found in a few vertebrates like hammerhead sharks, blacktop sharks & Komodo dragons. Hemiploid males are produced by some insects like ants, wasps & ants.

What are Reproductive Organs?

The reproductive organs are divided in two parts:

  • Male Reproductive organs

After a pair of testes, two sperm are ducted & a penis they all are omg the male reproductive organs.

The sperm are gametes & are formed by testes. The tests contain a million sperm. All the sperm has a tiny scale & despite the tiny scale, the sperm has a head, a middle section & a tail. Each sperm is a single cell with all the components of a normal cell.

  • Female reproductive organs

The female reproductive organs constitute a pair of ovaries, uterus & oviducts. Ovary creates feminine gametes called ova. One of the ovaries releases a single matured egg into the viaduct. The body develops in the uterus. Every egg is a single cell like sperm.

  • Sexual reproduction promotes the diversity of characters in the offspring, they promote it by providing genetic variation.

Ans: the embryo gets attached to the uterus in the female reproductive organ. After getting attached, the formation of the body like hands, eyes & legs, etc, occurs. After all these steps are completed the embryo gets embedded. After that, the embryo is called a fetus. So the answer is a fetus. In a fetus, a female reproductive organ reproductive embryo gets embedded.

Ans: cell division is a process of dividing cells. In cell division, the parental cells are divided into two or can be more daughter cells accordingly. Cell division provides more growth. Cell division is used as it helps in regeneration. Cell division helps in repairing & controlling damage. Cell division is involved in reproduction. If there are two type of reproductive processes then they have different cell division

Ques: What are the types of fertilization in animals? (3 marks)

Ans: Fertilization can be divided into two parts:

  • External Fertilization

When the fertilization process takes place outside the body of the animal. The process is called external fertilization. Most aquatic animals like Fish & frogs show external fertilization.

A large number of eggs can be fertilized in this method. After that, all these eggs get washed away by water or the predators.

  • Internal Fertilization

When the fertilization process takes place inside the body of the animals, the process is called internal fertilization. It mostly happens in terrestrial animals. In internal fertilization, there is no need to produce a large number of eggs.

Ans: After repeated division, When the zygote separates into a ball of cells. The process is known as the development of the embryo. After that, the ball of the cells gets differentiated into some respective tissues & organs. In the uterine wall, the embryo gets implanted. Therefore the process is called implantation. When all the body parts of the embryos become apparent, they form a fetus.

Ans: Oviparous animals are one of the two classes of animals that are categorized based on fertilization. In oviparous animals, fertilization can be internal or external. The nutrient is provided by the egg yolk. In oviparous animals, the development of the embryo is very little or maybe not at all inside the mother. The eggs are laid outside the womb, so there are very few chances of survival.

  • In binary fission, the division of cells can take place on any plane.
  • In the binary fission process, the nucleus of the amoeba is divided to form two daughter nuclei by a process called karyokinesis.
  • Finally, we have a body division that is divided into two though it has a nucleus too.
