Duke University admissions run on a Fall-first cycle where undergraduate applicants route through the Common Application against a 4.7% acceptance rate, while postgraduate applicants apply directly to the Graduate School with a Bachelor’s floor near a 3.0 GPA (around 65 percent) and program-specific prerequisites.

  • Fall 2027 primary intake: Early Decision closes 3 November 2026 and Regular Decision closes 4 January 2027 for first-year applicants.
  • Base tuition + application fees: Undergraduate base tuition is $70,265 (around INR 66.40 Lakhs) per year; the undergraduate application fee is $85 (around INR 8,033) and the Graduate School application fee is $105 (around INR 9,923).
  • Eligibility floor: UG expects Class XII near 90 percent with recommended TOEFL 100+ or IELTS 7.5+; PG requires a Bachelor’s at 3.0 GPA (around 65 percent) with TOEFL iBT 90 or IELTS 7.0 minimum.
  • Acceptance rate: 4.7 percent for the Class of 2030 first-year cohort.

Popular routes for Indian applicants are MS Computer Science, MS Biomedical Engineering, MS Interdisciplinary Data Science, and the Fuqua Daytime MBA, and student reviews describe an intense but well-supported classroom culture. Read the full Duke University overview for a wider snapshot before diving into the admissions pipeline below.

Duke University Application Deadlines for Indian Students

Deadlines below are drawn from the official Duke Undergraduate Admissions, Duke Graduate School, and Fuqua Daytime MBA pages for the Fall 2027 cycle. All Indian applicants should aim for the earliest window their program allows because visa processing at the US Consulate typically consumes eight to twelve weeks after an I-20 is issued.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use USD 1 = INR 94.50, the live mid-market rate on 8 September 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

Duke’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August entry) — most undergraduate, graduate, and MBA programs open here, and Spring intake is limited to select PhD tracks.

Duke University Eligibility for Indian Students

Duke uses institution-wide academic thresholds set by the Graduate School and Undergraduate Admissions, but individual departments layer prerequisite subjects and higher score bands on top. The section below outlines the base floor an Indian applicant needs to clear before a department reads the file in detail.

  • UG general entry: Class XII at around 90 percent from CBSE, ISC, or a state board with a rigorous humanities-plus-STEM load.
  • UG Pratt Engineering: Class XII with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at a strong grade band, plus advanced calculus preferred.
  • PG general entry: Four-year Bachelor’s at a 3.0 GPA (around 65 percent), or a three-year degree with a one-year Master’s, from a recognised Indian university.
  • PG STEM tracks: Bachelor’s in a directly related field with strong grades in prerequisite subjects (calculus, linear algebra, statistics, programming for CS or Data Science).
  • MBA: Bachelor’s degree, GMAT or GRE (test-optional route with strong quant evidence), and typically two to five years of full-time work experience.

Duke University English Test Requirements

The Graduate School and Undergraduate Admissions publish different English test floors. UG scores are recommended, not mandatory; PG scores are mandatory unless a waiver is granted.

Duke University English Waiver for Indian Students

The Graduate School grants an English test waiver when the applicant has completed two or more years of full-time study, prior to application, at a college where the sole medium of instruction is English and which is located in a country where English is the primary language. India does not qualify as a primary-English country under Duke’s definition, so Indian applicants schooled entirely in India cannot claim the waiver even when their instruction was in English. Applicants who completed a Bachelor’s in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, or Ireland may request the exemption in writing before applying.

Duke University PG Programs for Indian Students

Duke’s 10 schools offer more than 80 postgraduate programs, and the ones listed below are the most popular routes for Indian applicants. Base tuition for a full-time PG program sits between $69,600 (around INR 65.77 Lakhs) and $69,880 (around INR 66.03 Lakhs) per academic year, and a full detailed fee breakdown by course is available on the Fees page.

Duke University UG Programs and Entry Requirements

Duke’s Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and the Pratt School of Engineering share a single undergraduate application through the Common Application. Indian first-year applicants apply for a bachelor’s major but declare it formally in the second year, so the file focuses on academic rigour, essays, and extracurricular depth rather than a specific program fit.

Insider note: Duke is test-optional for the 2026-2027 admission cycle, but Indian applicants who score above 1500 on the SAT or 34 on the ACT should still submit scores because they anchor Class XII grades against a familiar benchmark for the reader.

Duke University MBA Admissions at Fuqua

The Fuqua School of Business runs a two-year Daytime MBA over four rounds, and Indian applicants are strongly advised to file in Early Action, Round 1, or Round 2 so that any I-20 issuance and F-1 visa slot leaves room for Fall enrolment. Base tuition sits at $81,000 (around INR 76.55 Lakhs) per year, and Fuqua-specific funding is covered on the university’s MBA programs page.

Duke University Fuqua MBA Test and Experience Policy

Fuqua accepts either the GMAT or the GRE and runs a formal test-waiver route for applicants whose academic and professional record already evidences strong quantitative ability. Full-time work experience of two to five years is the median for admitted Indian applicants, though Fuqua does admit high-performing candidates with less experience.

Duke University Fuqua Interview Process

Interviews are by invitation only after the first-stage review, and Fuqua uses a behavioural format led by a second-year student or an admissions officer. Interviews for international applicants are usually conducted on Zoom, and shortlisted candidates typically hear back within four to six weeks of the round deadline.

Insider note: The Fuqua application requires 25 Random Things, a short essay in which candidates list twenty-five personal facts. Indian applicants who read it as a checklist rather than a personality window usually under-score on the fit rubric.

Note: Round dates, essay prompts, and interview timing may shift year on year. Always confirm on the official Fuqua Daytime MBA page before submitting your application.

Duke University PhD Admissions and Funding

Doctoral programs at Duke are fully funded for admitted students, and the standard offer covers full tuition, a monthly living stipend, and health insurance for a five to six-year track. Application deadlines cluster in December for most STEM PhDs and in early January for humanities and social science tracks.

  • Deadline range: 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027 across most doctoral programs.
  • Funding: Multi-year stipend at around $40,000 to $46,000 per year for the 2026-2027 academic year, plus tuition remission and medical cover.
  • GRE policy: Program-specific; many STEM PhDs no longer require the GRE, while a few quantitative social science tracks still recommend it.
  • Advisor contact: Encouraged before applying, especially for lab-based STEM PhDs where research fit drives shortlisting.

Duke University PhD Applicant Profile

Successful Indian PhD applicants typically hold a Master’s degree with a strong research thesis, a first-author or co-author publication, and two academic recommenders who can speak to the applicant’s research trajectory in specific terms.

Note: Program-specific deadlines, stipend values, and prerequisite subjects vary. Always confirm on the official Duke Graduate School deadlines page before applying.

Duke University Application Process

The application flow differs by level: undergraduates use the Common Application, most PG applicants use Duke’s Graduate School portal, and Fuqua MBA applicants use the Fuqua application system. The steps below map to a first-time Indian applicant filing for Fall 2027 entry.

  1. Create your platform account. The Common Application for the 2026-2027 cycle opened on 1 August 2026, and undergraduate applicants add Duke to their college list from that portal.
  2. Pay the application fee. The undergraduate fee of $85 (around INR 8,033) is paid to Duke on the Common Application at the point of submission; Graduate School applicants pay $105 (around INR 9,923) and Fuqua applicants pay $225 (around INR 21,263) inside their respective portals.
  3. Upload transcripts. Class X, Class XII, and Bachelor’s transcripts are self-reported at the application stage; official documents are sent after admission.
  4. Submit test scores. Send TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or GMAT/GRE scores directly to Duke’s institution code from the test provider.
  5. Add recommenders. Two to three letters of recommendation are entered in the platform, and referees upload directly through a system-generated link.
  6. Write the essays. The Common App personal statement and a Duke-specific supplemental essay for UG, or the statement of purpose and personal statement for PG and MBA.
  7. Submit and track. After submission, applicants receive a checklist link to upload missing items before the deadline lapses.

Duke University Admission Decision Timeline

Undergraduate Early Decision results release in mid-December 2026, and Regular Decision results release by late March 2027. Admitted PG applicants typically hear back four to eight weeks after the deadline, and Fuqua releases decisions on the dates listed in the deadlines table. Admitted UG applicants must reply by 1 May 2027, and international admits then receive an I-20 from Duke’s International House.

Documents Required for Duke University Admissions

The document set differs slightly by level but the core paperwork is common across UG, PG, and MBA files. Assemble the list below at least eight weeks before the target deadline so recommenders and transcript issuers have runway.

  • Passport: Bio-page copy valid at least six months beyond intended entry.
  • Academic transcripts: Class X, Class XII, and Bachelor’s mark sheets and degree certificate (Master’s mark sheets for PhD applicants).
  • Statement of Purpose: One to two pages for PG and MBA; not required for UG (essays substitute).
  • Letters of recommendation: Two to three, uploaded by referees through system links.
  • Resume or CV: One page for UG, one to two pages for PG, and a Fuqua-format resume for MBA.
  • Test score reports: Official TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, GMAT, or GRE reports sent from the test provider.
  • Financial documents: Bank statements and I-20 financial declaration submitted after admission, before visa filing.
  • Photographs: Passport-size photographs uploaded per portal instructions.
  • Fuqua-specific: 25 Random Things essay and the standard Fuqua essay set for MBA applicants.

Duke University Acceptance Rate

Duke admitted 4.7 percent of applicants to the Class of 2030, the lowest first-year admit rate the university has published. International admit rates track below the institutional figure because the international pool is more self-selecting and applies in higher volume against a smaller quota.

Duke University Acceptance Rate by Level

Undergraduate admissions is the most selective route. Fuqua’s Daytime MBA sits in the 20 to 25 percent band, and most STEM master’s programs at the Pratt School and Trinity College admit at rates between 15 and 30 percent depending on cohort size.

Duke University Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

Duke does not publish a separate India-only admit rate, but Indian first-year applicants historically face a lower admit rate than the institutional 4.7 percent because international quotas are capped. Consult Duke’s overall ranking band alongside the acceptance figure to size selectivity against comparable US schools.

Insider note: Duke reports that around 800 admits enter through Early Decision each cycle, roughly half the first-year class. Indian applicants sure of Duke as their first choice should file Early Decision because the admit rate at that stage is around three times the Regular Decision rate.

USA Student Visa Process for Duke University Admits

Indian admits enrolled full-time at Duke apply for the F-1 student visa at a US Consulate in India. Duke’s Duke International House issues the I-20 within two to four weeks of the enrolment deposit and financial documentation being submitted. The F-1 filing then requires the DS-160 online form, the SEVIS I-901 fee of $350 (around INR 33,075), and the visa application fee of $185 (around INR 17,483). Financial proof must cover the first year of tuition plus living costs, and Duke’s living cost band sits between $11,578 (around INR 10.94 Lakhs) and $25,966 (around INR 24.54 Lakhs) per year.

Book the visa interview at Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, or Hyderabad, and carry the I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, admission letter, financial documents, and academic records to the appointment. F-1 admits can enter the US up to 30 days before the program start date, and Duke’s international orientation begins in mid-August. The USA student visa guide covers per-consulate wait patterns and the DS-160 form in more depth.

2026 update: US Consulate wait times for F-1 slots at Chennai and Delhi spike between April and July, so book the earliest available slot after the I-20 arrives, and hold a backup date at Hyderabad or Kolkata if primary consulate slots slip.

Tips and Checklist for Duke University Applicants

The steps below combine Indian-applicant tips with a timeline-anchored checklist for the Fall 2027 cycle. They cover sequencing, not paperwork content already listed above.

  • 10 weeks before deadline: Request Class XII, Bachelor’s, and Master’s transcripts from your board or university registrar because Indian institutions often take four to six weeks to issue attested copies.
  • 8 weeks before deadline: Book your TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or GMAT/GRE test date so the score report reaches Duke a week before the deadline.
  • 6 weeks before deadline: Brief your three recommenders in person, share your draft SOP or resume, and confirm they can upload by the deadline.
  • 4 weeks before deadline: Write and internally-review the Duke supplemental essay for UG, or the SOP and Fuqua essays for PG and MBA respectively.
  • 2 weeks before deadline: Submit test scores from the provider, verify referee uploads, and pay the application fee.
  • Post-admission: Pay the enrolment deposit, complete the I-20 form with financial documentation, and book the F-1 visa interview slot immediately after the I-20 arrives.
  • Early Decision insight: Duke’s Early Decision route admits roughly three times the Regular Decision rate, so Indian applicants sure of Duke as their first choice should file by 3 November 2026.
  • Fuqua fit signal: The 25 Random Things essay is a personality window rather than a résumé, and Indian applicants who use it to showcase depth outside academics tend to move to the interview stage.

Duke University admissions reward Indian applicants who plan against the Fall 2027 primary intake, file in the earliest applicable round, and pair a strong academic file with test scores that anchor Class XII grades for the US reader. Confirm every deadline on Duke’s official pages before submission because dates can shift within a cycle.

Scholarship

  • I did not receive a scholarship, and scholarships for Master of Engineering Management programs at Duke University are rare. 5-6 people from my course have a scholarships and they range from 5000-1000 USD.
  • They have no specific eligibility criteria, but a high CGPA, GRE or exceptional profile will get the scholarship. My roommate has a scholarship of 8000 USD.

Scholarship

  • I received a partial scholarship which is named as the merit scholarship. You don’t have to make a different application for this and all applicants are considered for the same by default.
  • I initially got a 7,000 USD scholarship that I renegotiated to 12,000 USD.
  • Many of my batch mates received similar merit scholarships ranging from 2,000 USD to 20,000 USD. There are no other financial aid options for international students other than the mentioned merit scholarships at Duke Fuqua.
  • I am unaware of the exact number of students who receive the merit scholarship but the typical award amount is around 5,000 USD.

Overview

While I was making a list of colleges that I had to apply to, I found the Fuqua culture really immersive and this is what attracted me to it. I chose this program because I wanted to transition from a pure sciences background to a management background. This will act as a springboard for my future career goals.
