Class 12 Chemistry Chapter 13: Amines – Important Topics

Amines are the derivative compounds of ammonia. They are classified as primary, secondary, and tertiary (3°) based on the number of hydrogen atoms that are replaced by aryl or alkyl groups in ammonia molecules. The various types of amines are:

  • Primary Amines are the ones that are formed when a hydrogen atom in ammonia is substituted by an aromatic or an alkyl group. Amino acids are an example of primary alkylamines.
  • Secondary Amines are the ones that have 2 organic substitutes either aryl or alkyl or both. These are bound to the nitrogen together with hydrogen. For example Dimethylamine.
  • Tertiary Amines are the ones whose nitrogen has 3 organic substitutes. For example EDTA and Trimethylamine.

Sulphonation Reaction:

(CH3)3CH + H2SO4/SO3 → (CH3)3CSO3H + H2SO4

Diazotization Reaction:

Mineral Acid + Aromatic Amine + Nitrous Acid →  Water + Diazonium Salt
