| Autumn 2027 | Admission results published | — | 1 April 2027 | — | universityadmissions.se |
Planning note: One SEK 900 fee covers up to four programme choices submitted in one universityadmissions.se cycle. Pick a mix of ambitious and realistic programmes within the same application rather than splitting across cycles.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology Eligibility for Indian Students
KTH’s academic bar is set by the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance plus programme-specific prerequisites. For Indian applicants, the standard thresholds below hold before you layer programme-specific coursework rules (ECTS in mathematics, programming, or materials science). English requirements come from the official KTH language requirements page.
KTH Master’s Eligibility for Indian Applicants
- Degree: A four-year Bachelor’s (BE, BTech, or equivalent 240 ECTS) in a field related to the chosen MSc.
- Academic standing: Around 60 to 65 percent or a CGPA of 6.5 to 7.0 on 10, with higher cutoffs on competitive specialisations.
- Prerequisite subjects: Programme-specific ECTS in mathematics, computer science, or domain subjects as listed on each MSc page.
- English: IELTS 6.5 overall, no band below 5.5, or TOEFL iBT 90 (minimum 20 in writing). PTE 62 and Cambridge CAE or CPE are also accepted.
KTH Bachelor’s Eligibility for Indian Applicants
- Class XII: Pass with Mathematics, Physics, and English through Class XII (CBSE, ISC, or State Board).
- Specific subject bar: Mathematics equivalent to Swedish Matematik 4, Physics to Fysik 2, and English equivalent to Engelska 6.
- English: Same IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90 floor as master’s unless the applicant qualifies for an exemption.
KTH IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
KTH is one of the few Swedish universities that publishes an explicit India-specific English waiver. If you hold a Bachelor’s in engineering, computer science, or a STEM field from India or Pakistan, the English proficiency test is waived — you do not need to submit IELTS or TOEFL. The waiver is listed on the KTH language requirements page and is applied automatically if your transcript shows a STEM degree.
Three other paths also qualify: a Bachelor’s where English was the main subject, a degree from a university where English was the sole medium of instruction, or 30 higher education credits completed in English in the EU, UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or Jamaica.
Insider note: The STEM-India waiver is a cost and timing win — most Indian engineering graduates can skip the INR 15,000-plus IELTS slot entirely. Keep your degree certificate and transcript ready in English so universityadmissions.se can verify the waiver on first review.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology Master’s Programs and English Scores
KTH offers 62 English-taught MSc programmes across engineering, computer science, architecture, and management. All are two-year, 120 ECTS programmes starting in the Autumn semester. Base tuition sits between SEK 342,000 and SEK 402,000 per year (around INR 32.80 to INR 38.56 Lakhs per year); for the full programme fee by specialisation, see the course-wise fees breakdown.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSc Computer Science | 2 years (120 ECTS) | Bachelor’s with 60%+ in Computer Science or related field, 20 ECTS in mathematics, 15 ECTS in computer science | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc Machine Learning | 2 years (120 ECTS) | Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics; 20 ECTS in mathematics | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc Industrial Engineering and Management | 2 years (120 ECTS) | Bachelor’s in Engineering with 20 ECTS in mathematics | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc Mechatronics | 2 years (120 ECTS) | Bachelor’s in Mechanical, Electrical, or related Engineering | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc Mechanical Engineering | 2 years (120 ECTS) | Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc Materials Science and Engineering | 2 years (120 ECTS) | Bachelor’s in Materials, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc Electric Power Engineering | 2 years (120 ECTS) | Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering or equivalent | IELTS 6.5 |
| MSc Sustainable Energy Engineering | 2 years (120 ECTS) | Bachelor’s in Engineering or Natural Sciences with 20 ECTS in mathematics | IELTS 6.5 |
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official KTH Royal Institute of Technology page for your chosen program before applying.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology Bachelor’s Programs for Indian Students
KTH offers only one English-taught Bachelor’s programme for international students, which keeps the UG pathway narrow. All other Bachelor’s programmes are taught in Swedish and require Swedish language proof, so most Indian undergraduates route through this single track or wait for the master’s cycle.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSc Information and Communication Technology | 3 years (180 ECTS) | Class XII with Mathematics 4 equivalent, Physics 2 equivalent, English 6 equivalent | IELTS 6.5 |
Base tuition for the BSc track sits at SEK 310,000 per year (around INR 29.73 Lakhs per year), lower than most MSc tracks because it has fewer lab hours. The STEM-India English waiver does not apply at UG level because applicants have not yet completed a Bachelor’s, so IELTS or TOEFL remains mandatory unless the Class XII certificate shows English as a core subject with proof of English-medium instruction across upper secondary.
Reality check: KTH’s UG acceptance rate is around 10 percent, far more selective than master’s. If your Class XII profile is average, keep the master’s route as the main plan and treat the BSc as a stretch application.
KTH PhD Doctoral Positions for Indian Applicants
KTH does not run a central PhD application round. Doctoral positions are opened as individual employment vacancies on the KTH jobs portal and are advertised nine times a year. Applicants apply directly to the hiring school or division, with each vacancy carrying its own deadline, project description, and supervisor.
How KTH Doctoral Positions Work
- Employment, not studentship: PhD candidates are KTH employees with a monthly salary and full social benefits.
- Salary ladder: SEK 33,700 per month (around INR 3.23 Lakhs per month) at entry, rising to SEK 38,500 per month (around INR 3.69 Lakhs per month) at step 4 after reaching 80 percent of the degree.
- Tuition: None — doctoral students pay no tuition fee.
- Where to look: The KTH vacancies page at kth.se/lediga-jobb carries all open positions in English.
KTH PhD Eligibility
- Degree: A master’s in a related field (240 ECTS cumulatively) with at least 60 ECTS at second-cycle level.
- English: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90, with the STEM-India waiver applicable if the master’s was in English.
- Project fit: Each vacancy lists specific research-area prerequisites; a strong master’s thesis in the same area is often decisive.
Funding and stipend adjustments through the ladder are published on the KTH HR intranet. For the broader scholarship picture at KTH, see KTH funding options for Indian students.
Insider note: Email the project supervisor before applying. A short mail with your CV and a line on why this specific project aligns with your master’s thesis is standard practice and often shortens the shortlisting cycle.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology Application Process Step by Step
All international master’s and bachelor’s applications to KTH route through universityadmissions.se, the Swedish Council for Higher Education’s national portal. KTH does not accept direct applications on its own website for international degree-seekers. The portal cycle for Autumn 2027 opens 16 October 2026 and closes 15 January 2027.
- Create an account on universityadmissions.se on or after 16 October 2026 (cycle open).
- Rank up to four programme choices in priority order; KTH should sit at priority 1 if it is your first choice.
- Upload Bachelor’s transcript, degree certificate, passport bio page, English proficiency proof (or STEM waiver evidence), and programme-specific documents.
- Submit the application by 15 January 2027.
- Pay the application fee of SEK 900 (around INR 8,631) on the universityadmissions.se portal by 1 February 2027.
- Submit all supporting documents by 1 February 2027.
- Check admission results on your account on 1 April 2027.
Fee payment is one-time per cycle regardless of how many of the four slots you fill. Documents can be uploaded directly in PDF; attested paper copies are not required at the application stage.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline
KTH admission decisions are released in a single wave on 1 April 2027 for the Autumn 2027 intake, not on a rolling basis. The decision shows up as an admission notification on your universityadmissions.se account along with next steps on reply, residence permit, and tuition deposit.
- Decision date: 1 April 2027 (notification goes live on universityadmissions.se).
- Reply deadline: Normally mid-April 2027, around two weeks from the decision — missing it forfeits the offer.
- Second-round admission: A late-round notification is published in July 2027 if seats remain and documents clear in time.
- First tuition instalment: Typically due in June or early July 2027 to confirm the seat and trigger the residence permit letter.
- Deferral: KTH generally does not permit deferral of a tuition-paying offer; a new application for the next cycle is usually required.
Planning note: Reply to your offer within 24 hours of the notification where possible. The visa and residence permit queue at Migrationsverket builds up quickly after April, and every week shortens the time you have for the paperwork.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology Documents Required for Indian Applicants
Documents are uploaded as PDFs on universityadmissions.se, and most do not need physical attestation at the application stage. All documents must be in English or carry an official English translation. The list below reflects the standard Indian applicant checklist for an MSc application.
- Passport: Bio page with photo, name, and expiry date.
- Bachelor’s degree certificate: Final degree certificate, or a statement of expected graduation if still in final semester.
- Official transcripts: Semester-wise marksheets from the awarding Indian university, stamped and signed.
- English proficiency proof: IELTS or TOEFL score report, or STEM-waiver evidence (degree certificate showing engineering or science major).
- Motivation letter: Programme-specific, 500 to 800 words, uploaded per programme choice.
- CV: One to two pages covering academics, projects, internships, and publications.
- Summary sheet (if required by programme): Standardised form showing course-wise ECTS mapping for prerequisite subjects.
- Project portfolio: Only for Architecture and Design MScs.
- Letters of recommendation: Not required for most MScs; included only where the programme page lists them.
- Fee payment proof: Receipt from the universityadmissions.se portal confirming SEK 900 payment.
Before you apply: Request certified English transcripts from your Indian university at least six weeks before the January deadline. Many Indian institutions take four to eight weeks to issue sealed and signed copies in English.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology Acceptance Rate for Indian Applicants
KTH does not publish a single institution-wide acceptance rate on its own site, but third-party admission data from Indian applicant pools and the Swedish Higher Education Authority points to a master’s admission rate of around 29 percent and a bachelor’s admission rate of around 10 percent. Rates vary heavily by programme — competitive specialisations like Machine Learning and Computer Science run tighter than materials and energy tracks.
What Drives the KTH Admission Decision
Academic marks matter but are not decisive on their own. Reviewers weigh prerequisite ECTS coverage (whether you have the maths and programming load the programme assumes), the motivation letter’s fit with the specialisation, and project or research experience documented in your CV. A strong motivation letter has moved borderline grade profiles into offers, and the reverse has pulled 75-percent profiles into waitlists.
How Indian Applicants Compare at KTH
India sends the largest non-EU cohort after Pakistan and Bangladesh combined. Within the Indian pool, applicants from IITs, NITs, BITS, and top private engineering colleges clear the academic bar comfortably, which pushes competition onto motivation letter quality and project depth. For a longer view on the India-specific acceptance rate pattern, see the KTH acceptance rate page for Indian applicants.
Insider note: Rank KTH as priority 1 on universityadmissions.se if it is your top choice. The portal uses the ranking to break ties — an applicant with KTH at priority 1 beats an identical applicant with KTH at priority 3 when seats run out.
Sweden Student Residence Permit Process for KTH Admits
Indian students admitted to KTH apply for a residence permit for studies through Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency), not a short-term study visa. The permit is granted for the full programme duration if finances and admission are confirmed, and it allows unlimited work hours during study.
The application opens online once you receive the KTH admission letter and have paid the first tuition instalment. Core documents include the admission letter, proof of first-instalment tuition payment, financial means for the full programme duration (around SEK 10,584 per month, roughly INR 1.01 Lakhs per month, for 2026 scales), valid passport, and comprehensive health insurance for stays under one year. Biometrics are captured at the Swedish embassy in New Delhi or VFS centres in major Indian cities. Processing typically runs 1 to 3 months, so submit the permit application the same week you accept the offer. Post-arrival, students register with the Swedish Tax Agency to receive a personal number if the permit is for one year or more.
2026 update: Migrationsverket raised the proof-of-funds requirement again for 2026, and the online application now requires an uploaded admission letter plus the KTH fee receipt before submission. Keep both as PDFs before you start the Migrationsverket form.
Tips and Checklist for KTH Royal Institute of Technology Admissions
The tips and steps below are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at KTH over recent Autumn cycles and sit alongside the official rules.
- Rank KTH as priority 1: universityadmissions.se uses ranking order to break ties when seats are oversubscribed, so your top choice must sit at the top of the four-choice list.
- Use the STEM-India English waiver: A four-year BE or BTech in a STEM discipline removes the IELTS or TOEFL requirement, saving around INR 15,000 and 3 weeks of booking lead time.
- Write a programme-specific motivation letter: KTH reviewers call out generic letters in the shortlisting process. Reference the specific specialisation and one named course or research group.
- Request English transcripts in October 2026: Indian universities typically take 4 to 8 weeks to issue sealed English transcripts.
- Create your universityadmissions.se account on 16 October 2026: The portal is busiest in early January; early account setup smooths the final submission.
- Submit the application by 10 January 2027: Keep a 5-day buffer before the 15 January deadline for last-minute document fixes.
- Pay the SEK 900 fee by 25 January 2027: Portal payments can take 48 hours to clear; do not wait for the 1 February cutoff.
- File the Migrationsverket residence permit application within 3 days of your 1 April 2027 offer: Processing takes 1 to 3 months, so earlier filing protects the August start.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology admissions reward applicants who combine clean academics with a sharp, specialisation-aware motivation letter and timely paperwork, and the Autumn 2027 cycle (closing 15 January 2027) is where Indian students concentrate given the top-80 QS ranking band and the STEM-India English waiver.

Scholarship
- I did not receive a scholarship. I applied for a lot of scholarships when I entered the university itself, but it was extremely competitive and I was not chosen. I wish I had gotten one this year but I did not make it this time too, one of my friends got a scholarship and her entire tuition fees were waived.
- The ratio of students awarded scholarships is very low, like 2% of the entire student body, which includes all branches.

- My programme was very hectic - sometimes you have to spend a lot of time to get the things done (ofcourse it depends on the Master programme you chose - but be ready for it)
- The professors are approachable during class hours but apart from that they are always busy and it is difficult to reach out to them. The classroom periods are more than doubts clearing sessions than learning.
- The living expenses are really high and it feels very expensive if you are coming from place like India.
Scholarship
- No, there are not any specific scholarships provided for my course. But, there is a full scholarship called India scholarship, which is awarded to only 2 students every year. So, it is very competitive to gain a scholarship.
- Also, there are other scholarships given for people from some other countries. These options are limited if you are from India. If you do well in your first year of studies, you can apply and win a scholarship for your 2nd year.
