Similar to SAT or ACT, GRE is taken by the graduate applicants seeking masters or doctoral degrees in the top universities of the US, Canada, UK, and Germany. GRE scores are accepted for master’s degree programs like MS in the USA as well. Over the period, ETS manages to introduce a new format and launched GRE Revised General Test for the candidates. GRE measures quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and analytical writing skills.

    Why take GRE?

GRE seems more difficult than ACT or SAT. Questions asked in the exam are quite trickier. GRE Verbal reasoning tests vocabulary from challenging reading passages and complicated quantitative problems. Purpose of writing GRE is to test level of competence in applicants for academic excellence. Few points to remember before writing GRE

    • The course you are applying for whether it requires GRE or not
    • Is there any kind of fellowships for merit-based applicants for funding the course program?
    • Have you shortlisted the course or doctoral research to pursue?
    • Is your grad school GPA score eligible for applying for further studies?

If you assume a good GRE score is a myth then you have to make detailed analysis and comparison of the grad schools you are dreaming to apply. Quant and Verbal sections of the exam are scaled on a range between 130-170. Average GRE score for Verbal Reasoning happens to be 151 and that of GRE Quantitative Reasoning is 154.

Apart from grad schools, business schools and law schools also accept GRE scores. GRE can be taken across the world once in 21 days. Candidates can take the exam maximum of 5 times a year. Score validity for GRE is 5 years.

Hey, I'm currently doing BCA final year. Can you please help me out with the courses & program I can apply internationally.Thank you

      21 Feb, 2018 00:20
      Bhawna Vedwal

Hello Ashwin, Technically, anybody can take the GRE exam. However, the GRE is written by those wanting to pursue a Master’s degree. In the US, they require 16 years of education in order to be eligible for a Master’s i.e. 12 years in school 4 years of undergraduate education. Since a BCA is only 3 years long, you might want to consider doing a diploma course for a year or doing your MCA in India and then applying again abroad. Whatever you do, you need atleast 4 years of undergraduate education. Your GRE scores are valid for five years so you could still take the exam now while figuring out what to do. Keep in mind though that most colleges prefer that the GRE score you apply with be not older than two years.
