VISA & Work Study

VISA

Do the following to get an F-1 or J-1 entry visa:

  • All non-US citizens who plan to study in F-1 or J-1 status at Binghamton must indicate their requested status on the confirmation of enrollment form. In addition, students who need a Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 immigration document from Binghamton must apply for the immigration document.
  • The Office of Global Services will issue a Certificate of Eligibility for F-1 (or J-1) Student Status, which they refer to as students ‘immigration documents’. This immigration document is required for admission to the United States in F-1 or J-1 status and serves as the basis of the student visa application at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Work Study

  • F-1 and J-1 students may work no more than 20 hours per week on campus when classes are in session. These 20 hours include the work students do for an assistantship if students have one.
  • Students cannot work off-campus (including off-campus, credit-bearing internships) without prior authorization from the ISSS and the U.S. federal government. Opportunities for off-campus work are limited.
