What Students Say
Likes
- The classes are very career-focused, especially for analytics and business students. Most assignments are practical and based on real-world tools like SQL, Tableau, Power BI, and Python.
- Being located in Chicago is a huge advantage because there are many opportunities for internships, networking events, and career fairs.
- The professors are approachable and supportive. Many of them have industry experience, which makes the learning more relevant.
Dislikes
- Some administrative processes can be slow at times, especially regarding documentation and approvals.
- Tuition and living expenses can feel expensive for international students.
- Certain courses are more academically intense than expected, so balancing studies, internships, and part-time work can become stressful.
Course Curriculum
- The course curriculum at the university was quite updated and industry-oriented. At the time, my program was a 30-credit course with a mix of core subjects and electives focused on practical learning. The syllabus covered tools and concepts that are currently relevant in the industry, such as SQL, R, and marketing analytics techniques.
- Most courses included projects, presentations, and case studies, which gave good practical exposure alongside academics. Some subjects also involved research-based assignments and data-driven problem solving.
- Usually, I had around 2 to 3 classes a week, depending on the semester schedule. Graduate classes were mostly conducted in the afternoon or evening, and the average class size was around 20–40 students, which made it easier to interact with professors and classmates.
Admission Experience
- I chose this university because of its strong focus on technology and analytics, along with its location in Chicago, which offers good career and networking opportunities. The MS in Marketing Analytics program matched my interests since it combines business with practical analytical tools like SQL, Tableau, and Python.
- The admission process was smooth, and the university staff was helpful throughout the documentation and onboarding process. My overall experience has been positive so far. I like that the courses are practical and industry-oriented rather than completely theory-based. The professors are approachable, and the diverse student community helped me learn a lot beyond academics as well.
Faculty
- The faculty at IIT is knowledgeable, supportive, and approachable. Most professors are well-versed in their subjects and also bring practical industry experience into the classroom, which makes learning more application-oriented.
- Since graduate classes are usually moderate in size, students get enough opportunities to interact with professors, ask questions, and discuss projects individually. The faculty and staff are generally helpful and supportive throughout academics and career-related guidance.
- Professors like Dinakar Jayarajan and M. Krishna Erramilli positively impacted my experience through their practical teaching approach, industry insights, and encouragement toward class participation and student development, especially in analytics and business-related subjects.
Campus Life
- Campus life at IIT is diverse and engaging. The university has active student organizations like the Indian Students Association (ISA), Toastmasters, and many more varied clubs, along with regular cultural events, workshops, and career fairs.
- The campus infrastructure is modern, with good classrooms, labs, library facilities, and study spaces. Sports and recreational facilities are also available, making the overall student experience balanced and enjoyable.
Part Time Jobs
- Part-time opportunities at IIT are mainly available on campus, but they can be competitive because many students apply for them. Common roles include library assistant, student assistant, dining services, Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), and Departmental Assistant (DA) positions. Students are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during regular semesters. The hourly pay usually ranges between $14–20 depending on the role and department.
- Most students apply through the university job portal, departmental emails, or by reaching out to professors directly for TA/RA opportunities. Students with good academic performance and communication skills generally have better chances of securing these positions.
Placement
- Full-time job opportunities after completing the program at IIT are good in terms of available roles in analytics, business, and technology fields, but the current market is competitive for international students because of visa sponsorship limitations and hiring conditions. Students usually apply for roles such as Marketing Analyst, Business Analyst, and Data Analyst after graduation.
- Most students find jobs through internships, networking, LinkedIn, referrals, career fairs, and online job portals rather than direct campus placements. Strong technical skills, internship experience, and networking play an important role in the job search process.
- The salary range depends on the role and company, but analytics-related positions generally offer competitive starting salaries. Many students do secure jobs within a few months after graduation, though the process can take time and requires consistent effort, especially for international students looking for visa-sponsored opportunities.
Accommodation
- I found my accommodation near Illinois Institute of Technology through student WhatsApp and Facebook housing groups, where seniors and existing students regularly post available apartments and roommate openings. I stayed in a shared apartment with roommates, which made the overall cost more affordable. My monthly rent was around USD 380-420 per month, excluding some utilities.
- The apartment included facilities like Wi-Fi, laundry, kitchen access, heating, and basic furnished/common living spaces. The location was also convenient for commuting to campus through public transportation.
Exams
- For admission, I was required to submit an English proficiency exam score, and I applied with IELTS. GRE was optional for my program at the time of application.
- The admission process mainly required academic transcripts, Statement of Purpose (SOP), resume/CV, Letters of Recommendation (LORs), and IELTS score reports.
- After submitting the application and documents through the university portal, I received the admission decision and further instructions regarding enrollment and visa-related documents.
- The university generally accepts students with a good academic profile and a valid English proficiency score. Depending on the program, the GRE is optional for many courses.
- My scores: IELTS – 8 overall.
Fees
- The total tuition fee for my program, MS in Marketing Analytics at Illinois Institute of Technology, was approximately USD 45,000–50,000 for the complete 30-credit program, excluding living expenses, health insurance, and personal costs. The exact amount can vary depending on scholarship, course selection, and yearly fee updates by the university.
