Techno Main Salt Lake and Techno India University share one address. Both sit at EM-4, Sector V, Salt Lake, Kolkata. Both run B.Tech programmes under the Techno India Group.

The real difference is legal, not physical. Techno Main Salt Lake (TMSL) is a MAKAUT-affiliated college. Techno India University (TIU) is a private state university.

TMSL started in 2001 and its degree is awarded by MAKAUT. TIU was set up by a West Bengal Act in 2012. It writes its own syllabus and awards its own degree.

B.Tech costs about INR 4.02 Lakh at TMSL. The same course costs about INR 6.32 Lakh at TIU. CSE closed at WBJEE ranks 10,499 and 44,651 in 2025.

Degree Awarding Body and Affiliation Explained

This is the difference students most often miss. TMSL is a college, not a university. It runs the MAKAUT syllabus for every B.Tech branch.

MAKAUT sets the semester question papers. MAKAUT-assigned examiners evaluate the answer scripts. The mark sheet and the final degree carry the MAKAUT name.

TIU works the other way round. A West Bengal Act created it in 2012.

So it frames its own syllabus. It sets its own papers. It signs its own degree.

Example: A CSE student at TMSL writes a MAKAUT paper each semester. A CSE student at TIU writes a paper set by TIU faculty. Both degrees are recognised, but they come from two different bodies.

Students describe MAKAUT papers as tighter to score in. Students at TIU describe in-house evaluation as easier on marks. Employers, though, tend to look at the branch and the CGPA first.

Rankings and Accreditation Compared

The approvals differ because the two institutions are regulated differently.

Recognition Techno Main Salt Lake Techno India University
Approval AICTE AICTE and UGC
Programme accreditation NBA for CSE, Electrical, Food Technology NBA status under process
Institutional status Affiliated to MAKAUT NAAC accredited state private university
Other regulators MAKAUT statutes COA, PCI, BCI, INC

Neither campus holds a rank band in NIRF 2025. TMSL did submit data to the NIRF 2025 Engineering category. TIU does not appear on the 2025 participation list.

NBA accreditation is the one hard quality marker that separates them. Three TMSL branches hold it. No TIU branch does at present.

How Each Campus Admits B.Tech Students

TMSL takes B.Tech students only through centralised counselling. The accepted scores are WBJEE and JEE Main. Seats are allotted round-wise on the wbjeeb.nic.in portal.

TIU also joins WBJEE counselling as a private university. But it runs a second door of its own. That door is TNJEE, the Techno National Joint Entrance Examination.

TNJEE is set and conducted by the university itself. It covers engineering, health sciences, management, law, fashion and film programmes. Merit-based direct admission is also offered against Class 12 marks.

The Class 12 bar is the same at both. Candidates need 45 percent in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Example: A candidate at rank 60,000 misses CSE at TMSL. The same candidate can still reach TIU through TNJEE.

WBJEE 2025 Cutoff for CSE and Core Branches

The rank gap is the widest single difference between the two.

Techno Main Salt Lake Closing Ranks

All figures below are General category, All India quota, last round.

Branch 2025 Closing Rank 2024 Closing Rank
Computer Science and Engineering 10,499 6,969
CSE (AI and Machine Learning) 14,988 11,790
CSE (Data Science) 18,299 12,917
Information Technology 18,907 11,606
CSE (Cyber Security) 22,014 14,560
CSE (Internet of Things) 27,838 17,133

Every computing branch loosened between 2024 and 2025. Core branches at TMSL close far later. Electrical, Mechanical and Civil ran close to rank 98,000.

Techno India University Closing Ranks

TIU releases seats across two main rounds. Round 2 is where most branches finally close.

Branch Round 1 Closing Rank Round 2 Closing Rank
Computer Science and Engineering 25,974 44,651
Electronics and Communication 37,715 93,475
Computer Science and Business Systems 43,693 96,234
Biotechnology 46,971 93,820
Electrical Engineering 70,187 74,529

Civil closed near rank 93,438 in Round 1. Mechanical closed near 96,763 and Semiconductor Engineering near 97,846.

A rank that shuts every TMSL computing branch still opens TIU CSE.

B.Tech Fees Compared

TMSL charges an uneven semester fee. TIU charges a flat one.

Fee Head Techno Main Salt Lake Techno India University
First semester INR 56,200 INR 79,000
Later semesters INR 41,300 to INR 51,750 INR 79,000 each
Four-year total INR 4,02,000 INR 6,32,000
Hostel per year Not run on campus About INR 75,000

The gap over four years is about INR 2.30 Lakh. Semiconductor Engineering at TIU costs around INR 6.84 Lakh.

Accommodation pushes the gap the other way. TIU runs a hostel on campus. TMSL students report renting paying guest rooms nearby.

Rents of around INR 7,000 a month are commonly reported. So an outstation student adds roughly INR 84,000 a year. That brings the two totals much closer.

Placements at Both Campuses

The figures below are the latest each institution has disclosed. TMSL data is for the 2022-23 cycle. TIU data is for the 2022 cycle.

Placement Parameter Techno Main Salt Lake Techno India University
Placement rate 69.3 percent 89 percent
Average package INR 7.5 LPA INR 4 LPA
Highest package INR 29 LPA INR 32 LPA

TMSL placed 657 of 948 students in 2022-23. It reported 75.52 percent in 2021-22 and 65.51 percent in 2020-21.

TIU reported 86 percent in 2021. Its average that year was INR 3.80 LPA.

The average package is where TMSL pulls clearly ahead. Its headline figure is nearly double the TIU average. The highest package, though, sits marginally higher at TIU.

Branch matters more than campus here. CSE, IT and ECE carry the placement numbers at both. Mechanical and Civil see far fewer campus offers on either side.

Course Choice and Campus Scale

TMSL is the larger engineering campus by a wide margin. TIU is the broader institution by subject.

Scale Techno Main Salt Lake Techno India University
B.Tech approved intake About 1,080 About 300
Classrooms 90 56
Laboratories 76 28
Library books 90,968 54,634

TMSL runs 14 B.Tech branches. It also offers MCA, MBA, BCA, BBA and Media Science. Its CSE intake alone is 120 seats and IT carries 150.

TIU lists 21 B.Tech specialisations on a much smaller seat base. As a university, it also runs B.Pharm, LLB, B.Arch and nursing. A student unsure about engineering has more room there.

What Students Say About Studying at Each Campus

Some of the deciding facts never appear in an official brochure. These themes recur across student accounts of both campuses.

Hostel and Accommodation

TMSL students consistently report that no hostel runs on the campus itself. Outstation students arrange paying guest rooms in Salt Lake and Kestopur. TIU students report a hostel is available and allotted through the university.

Placement Eligibility Rules

TMSL students report a CGPA floor near 7.0 for campus drives. Many recruiters are described as asking for 8.0 and no active backlogs. Drives usually open from the sixth or seventh semester.

Crowding and Faculty Access

TMSL students describe crowded labs and long queues. The large intake is the direct cause. TIU students rate infrastructure highly and describe an air-conditioned campus.

Faculty access is described as easier in the smaller TIU batches.

Value for Money

Value for money is the weakest-rated parameter in TIU student accounts. Students describe the fee as high against the placement support offered. TMSL students raise fewer cost complaints but more infrastructure ones.

Which Is Better for B.Tech?

  • TMSL is the stronger pick on cost and cutoff strength. Its reported average package is also higher. The MAKAUT degree carries a longer track record with recruiters.
  • TIU works better for candidates who need a campus hostel. It also suits a weaker WBJEE rank. Its own entrance route stays open after WBJEE counselling ends.

Example: A candidate at WBJEE rank 9,000 wants a low fee. TMSL CSE is then the first choice.

A candidate at rank 50,000 needs campus accommodation. TIU CSE is then the realistic option.

Once housing costs are added, the four-year gap narrows sharply. The deciding factors are rank, hostel need and the degree name.
