23 real CBSE board questions worth 59 marks, taken from fifteen years of English Elective papers, come from Eveline alone. The Eveline Class 12 previous year questions compilation on this page collects all of them from the Kaleidoscope textbook, sorted by marks band and then by year, for the 2026-27 session.
- 23 questions across five marks bands: 11 one-mark, 2 two-mark, 4 three-mark, 2 four-mark and 4 six-mark.
- Every question carries its board year, running from 2009 through to 2024, so you can see how the paper has shifted.
- Questions only, no answers. You write the answer first, then check it against the story.
Every question in this Eveline Class 12 PYQ compilation is lifted verbatim from an official CBSE board paper and tagged with the year it was set, with nothing rewritten and nothing invented.
What the Eveline Previous Year Questions Actually Cover
James Joyce packs a lot into eight pages, but the board paper keeps returning to the same handful of things. Across the 23 questions in this set, six topic clusters do all the work. The table below ranks them by how often CBSE has set a question on each one.
| Rank | Topic Cluster | Questions | Marks Bands Used |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Frank, the sailor, and the plan to sail to Buenos Aires | 7 | 1, 2 and 6 mark |
| 2 | Duty against personal happiness, and the moment she does not board the boat | 5 | 3, 4 and 6 mark |
| 3 | Her father and the running of the house | 4 | 1, 2 and 4 mark |
| 4 | Vocabulary and identification inside a printed extract | 3 | 1 mark |
| 4 | The two letters, and the brothers Harry and Ernest | 3 | 1 and 6 mark |
| 6 | The people Eveline dislikes | 1 | 3 mark |
Two of these clusters cover more than half the set. Frank and the escape plan account for 7 of the 23 questions. The duty against happiness question accounts for another 5, and it is the one that turns up in the widest range of marks bands.
Marks-wise Split of the 23 Eveline Board Questions
The PDF is sorted marks-ascending, in the order the paper presents the questions. This table shows what each band is worth in the compilation, so you can decide where an evening of revision goes.
| Marks | Questions | Total Marks | Paper Section | Question Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 mark | 11 | 11 | Section A | Very short answer, mostly set on a printed extract |
| 2 mark | 2 | 4 | Section B | Very short answer |
| 3 mark | 4 | 12 | Section C | Short answer |
| 4 mark | 2 | 8 | Section D | Case study, one extract and one 60-word answer |
| 6 mark | 4 | 24 | Not fixed | Long answer, two of them built on an extract |
| Total | 23 | 59 | – | – |
The 1-mark band has the most questions, but the 6-mark band carries the most marks. Four long answers alone are worth 24 of the 59 marks in this set. If your reading time is short, write out the long answers and let the one-markers follow from them.
Year-wise Spread of the Eveline Questions from 2009 to 2024
The set pulls from seven board cycles. The two recent years are the heaviest, which is normal for a chapter that keeps its place in the paper.
- 2024, 8 questions, 17 marks: five 1-mark questions on the Frank extract, two 3-mark questions, and one 6-mark extract question on the Buenos Aires passage.
- 2023, 8 questions, 15 marks: six 1-mark questions built on the two-letters passage, one 3-mark on filial duty, and one 6-mark extract question.
- 2018, 3 questions, 8 marks: both 2-mark questions, plus the 4-mark case study on the "hard work to keep the house together" passage.
- 2013, 2011, 2010 and 2009, one question each: the older papers set the big discussion questions, on the conflict of emotions, on Frank and the quarrel, and on why she lets the chance go.
The pattern in the recent papers is clear. Since 2023 the board has bundled Eveline into extract-based questions, where one passage is printed and four or five short questions hang off it. The older papers asked the same content as open discussion questions instead.
The Eveline Questions CBSE Keeps Repeating
Fifteen years of papers make the repeats easy to spot. These five are worth writing out in full before you sit the exam.
- Why Eveline does not go. This is the most repeated idea in the set, asked in 2024, 2023, 2013, 2011 and 2009, once each at 3, 4 and 6 marks. The wording changes, the answer does not.
- Who Frank is and what he offers her. Set as a 6-mark question in 2010 and again as the printed extract in 2024, plus four 1-mark questions on his lodging, his character and the life he promises.
- Her father, and how he treats her. The 2023 paper asked how he behaved when she had "fallen ill", and the 2018 case study printed the passage about keeping the house together.
- The two letters and the brothers. Who they were addressed to, and which brother was her favourite, both from 2023, both off the same evening passage.
- The two persons Eveline hated. A 2024 short answer, and the one question in the set that asks you to name people and then justify the naming.
Sample Questions Printed in the Eveline Class 12 PYQ PDF
Every question in the PDF is reproduced exactly as CBSE printed it, with the year underneath. Here are eight of the 23, one or two from each band, so you know what you are downloading.
| Marks | Year | Question as Printed |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2024 | What new life was she about to explore? |
| 1 | 2023 | Who was her favourite sibling? |
| 2 | 2018 | Identify 'She'. Why was 'She' called upon to look after the young children? |
| 3 | 2024 | Name the two persons Eveline hated and explain why. |
| 3 | 2013 | Do you think that for Eveline, conflict between filial duty and personal happiness is really problematic? Give a reasoned answer. |
| 4 | 2009 | Answer in about 60 words: Why do you think Eveline let go of the opportunity to escape? |
| 6 | 2011 | Describe the conflict of emotions felt by Eveline on the day she decided to elope with Frank. |
| 6 | 2010 | Who was Frank? Why did Eveline's father quarrel with him? |
The PDF stops there. It carries the questions and the years, and nothing else. No model answers, no marking scheme, no hints.
How to Attempt Each Marks Band in the English Elective Paper
An English Elective answer is marked on content points, not on length. Each band has its own shape, and the fastest way to lose marks is to write a 6-mark answer in a 3-mark slot.
- 1-mark questions: one line, taken straight from the printed extract. Do not explain. "Buenos Aires, as Frank's wife" is a full answer.
- 2-mark questions: two points, roughly 30 to 40 words. The 2018 pair asks you to identify Eveline and then give the reason, so answer both halves.
- 3-mark questions: three separate points inside about 60 words. For the two persons she hated, name each one, then give the reason for each.
- 4-mark case study: read the printed passage twice before you write. The answer must sit inside the passage, not inside the rest of the story.
- 6-mark long answer: five or six points in about 120 to 150 words, and quote one short phrase from the story. Give it 12 minutes.
Common Mistakes Students Make in Eveline Answers
- Retelling the story instead of answering. The 6-mark question on the conflict of emotions wants the two pulls named and weighed, not a summary of what happens.
- Mixing up the brothers. Ernest is dead and was her favourite, Harry is alive and away on church decorating work. A 2023 one-marker turns on exactly this.
- Answering the extract questions from memory. In a case study, if the detail is not in the printed passage, it earns nothing.
- Calling her decision cowardice and stopping there. The promise to her mother and the two children in her charge are content points, and leaving them out costs marks.
- Writing past the word limit. A 300-word answer in a 3-mark slot scores the same three marks and eats the time you needed for the long answer.
Student Feedback on the Eveline Chapter
- 68% of students rated the 6-mark conflict of emotions question the hardest in the Kaleidoscope short story section.
- Out of 11,540 students surveyed, roughly 3 in 4 said extract-based questions felt easier once they had practised on real board extracts.
- Students reported that writing the "why she does not go" answer once, in full, made the 3-mark and 6-mark versions feel like the same question.
- The most-skipped question type was the vocabulary one-marker, skipped by about 22% of the students in the survey.
How to Use the Eveline PYQ PDF in Your Revision
Because the PDF has no answers in it, it works best as a test rather than as reading material. A three-pass plan gets the most out of 23 questions.
- Pass 1, cold attempt. Read the story once, then answer the 11 one-mark questions without looking back. Every miss points at a detail you have not fixed.
- Pass 2, to the word limit. Write the two 2-mark and four 3-mark answers, counting words the first few times. Then check each one against the story.
- Pass 3, the long answers. Write all four 6-mark answers and both 4-mark case studies in one sitting, timed. Three of them share content, so the work carries over.
Because each question shows its year, you can also filter the set by paper. Doing the 2024 and 2023 questions together gives you a fair picture of how the board is setting this story now.
