Natya Chapter Snapshot

Chapter 14 explains natya as storytelling through performance. A story becomes a performance when students add dance, choreography, dialogues, songs, instruments, costumes, make-up and stage design.

The easiest way to revise the chapter is to remember natya as story plus movement plus music plus stage design. This keeps the chapter practical because the textbook expects students to plan and present a group performance.

Krishna and Kaliya Story Plan

The chapter begins with Grandma narrating the story of Krishna and the snake Kaliya. Kaliya frightens people near the river Kalindi, but Krishna calms him through music and dance.

Students can turn this story into natya by dividing it into scenes. Fear, courage, fight, celebration and peace should appear clearly in the body movement and music.

• Use fear and raudra for Kaliya and scared children.
• Use veera and graceful steps for Krishna.
• Use a brighter group rhythm after Kaliya becomes calm.

Salutation and Benediction

All traditional performances begin with a salutation. The salutation helps the group seek blessings and focus before the performance starts.

The chapter also explains benediction. At the end, performers bow to thank the class. This exchange of respect is part of natya, not an extra formality.

• Benediction: end with gratitude and peace.
• Regional practice: students may choose a prayer from their own language and tradition.

Activity 14.1 Planning Checklist

Activity 14.1 asks students to note down dance elements that can be used in natya. The class divides into groups and each group prepares movements for a section of the story.

The checklist includes steps, rhythm, different beats, navarasa, upper and lower torso movements, hip movements, hand gestures, animal hastas, jumps and spins.

Activity 14.2 Practice and Presentation

Activity 14.2 is the presentation stage. Students combine the movements prepared by each group, practise the full sequence and perform the story as a grand finale.

Practice should check timing, entry, exit, music cues, props and teamwork. The assessment table checks storytelling, active participation, collaboration, creativity and correct use of performance elements.

• Use simple props such as peacock feather, flute, dhoti, blue dupatta and animal masks.
• Keep costumes easy to move in.
• Make sure every prop helps the class understand the scene.
