This A Letter to God summary breaks the plot into four easy parts, following one farmer through hope, loss, and blind faith.
The Farmer and the Ripe Field
Lencho, a hard-working farmer, waits for rain for his ready-to-harvest corn. The rain finally comes and he is happy, calling the big drops new coins. But suddenly a hailstorm strikes. For an hour the hail falls, and the whole field is left white, as if covered with salt. The crop is fully destroyed.
The Letter to God
With the crop gone, Lencho's only hope is God. He is sure God's eyes see everything. That Sunday he writes a letter asking God for a hundred pesos to sow his field again and eat until the next crop. He posts the letter addressed simply to God.
The Postmaster's Kind Act
A post office employee finds the letter and laughs, but the postmaster is moved by Lencho's faith. To keep that faith alive, he collects money from the staff and his own salary. He cannot gather the full hundred, so he sends a little more than half, signed only as God.
The Ironic Ending
Lencho takes the money without any surprise, sure that God sent it. But he counts only seventy pesos and grows angry. He is certain God could not make a mistake.
