NCERT gives four major clothing functions. A school uniform protects clothing from comparison, supports discipline and reduces visible economic differences.
Selection of clothing in India depends on age, climate and season, occasion, fashion and income. Age matters because infant clothes, school uniforms and adolescent clothes cannot be judged by the same rules. Climate decides fabric and layers. Occasion decides formality. Fashion gives contemporary appeal, while a fad is short lived. Income affects number, quality, durability and care cost.

Basic Clothing Needs of Children
Children need clothes that allow movement. Comfort means soft, absorbent fabric, correct fit, wide necklines, enough ease at the crotch and no painful elastic. Tight, bulky or heavily starched clothing restricts activity. Clothes should not be so large that they become unsafe during play.
Safety is equally important. Loose trims, dangling sashes, loose buttons and small parts can cause harm, especially for infants and toddlers. Bright colours help visibility outdoors. Self-help features build confidence. Front openings, large buttons, clear front and back sides, and simple fasteners help children dress and undress themselves.
Appearance and growth allowance should be balanced. Children may be allowed to express preferences, but garments should still fit properly. Tucks, pleats, cuffs and adjustable straps can give growth allowance without buying an oversized garment. Easy-care fabrics are useful because children soil clothes during play.
Age-wise Apparel Requirements
Infants need warmth, hygiene, softness and easy changing. Diapers and undershirts are basic garments, and fabrics must be gentle on delicate skin. At the creeping age, clothes should be loose, light and non-interfering so that the child can sit, crawl and pull up to stand. Rompers and sun-suits are common choices.
Toddlers need freedom for walking, climbing and running. Correct shoe fit becomes important because poor fit can affect comfort and foot health. Preschool children need washable clothes, self-help openings and designs that support play. Elementary school children need durable clothing, suitable school wear and comfort for study, games and travel.
Adolescents become more aware of appearance, peer acceptance and contemporary trends. Clothing decisions at this stage should respect identity while keeping modesty, comfort, activity and family values in view. Sports and workouts need suitable garments, proper shoes and enough freedom of movement.
Special Needs Clothing and Quick Revision
Children with special needs may need clothing that supports independence, dignity and safety. Adaptive features can include larger openings, easier fasteners, comfortable seams, adjustable closures and fabrics that do not irritate the skin. The aim is not only dressing convenience, but also participation in daily activities with confidence.
