Fixtures, Byes and Seeding

A fixture is the schedule of matches in a tournament. In knock-out tournaments, a team is eliminated after one defeat, so the total number of matches is N - 1. A bye is direct entry to the next round, not an opponent and not a loss.

Fixture PointRuleExample
Total byesNext power of 2 minus number of teamsFor 35 teams, 64 - 35 = 29 byes.
Odd byesUpper half gets (byes - 1) / 2 and lower half gets (byes + 1) / 2.For 29 byes: upper half 14, lower half 15.
SeedingStrong teams are placed apart.Top teams should not meet in early rounds.

League, Staircase, Cyclic and Tabular Methods

In a league tournament, every team plays several matches and points decide the winner. For a single league, matches are N(N - 1) / 2. For a double league, matches are N(N - 1).

  • Staircase method: write teams in a list and pair each team with all teams below it.
  • Cyclic method: rotate teams round by round. If teams are odd, add one bye slot.
  • Tabular method: write teams as row and column heads, then fill the upper triangle.

Intramural and Extramural Events

Intramural events are conducted within one institution, while extramural events are conducted between institutions. This is a frequent difference-table topic in Class 12 Physical Education.
