The latest rankings for the best higher education universities in India have been released and guess what? IIT-Bombay has emerged as the best higher education institute in India again. In the rankings released by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), a British company ranking world universities for years, the premier technological institute has been able to grab the #1 spot for the second consecutive time.
Apart from that, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, grabbed the second spot with IIT-Delhi at number 3. Since last year, QS started releasing rankings exclusively for Indian universities owing to the popularity. This year’s rankings are mentioned in the table below:

Just like in the previous years, the central govt. sponsored IITs have dominated the list. Out of the top 12 universities and institutes, 7 are the IITs. IIT Bombay is wearing 2 crowns at the same time. In another list released by QS previous month, IIT Bombay ranked as No. 1 institute in India with regard to the employability of the students.
Apart from the IITs and the IISc, Delhi University has appeared as the top university in India. The central university is followed by Hyderabad University at No. 8. In the case of state-level universities, Calcutta University has topped the list. 2 universities from West Bengal have made their presence in the top 12 list. The Calcutta University and Jadavpur University have grabbed the spot No. 11 and spot No. 12 respectively.
The ranking company QS has also released a press release mentioning what all criteria were considered for ranking the institutes and the universities. These included:
1. Academic Reputation (30%)
2. Employer Reputation (20%)
3. Faculty-Student Ratio (20%)
4. The proportion of staff with a Ph.D. (10%)
5. Papers per faculty from Scopus database (10%)
6. Citations per paper from Scopus database (5%)
7. The proportion of international students (2.5%)
8. Proportion of international faculty (2.5%)
Scopus Database
Scopus is an abstract and citation index of the Elsevier journal covering nearly 36,377 titles from approximately 11,678 publishers in the fields of life science, social sciences, physical sciences, and health sciences. The database covers book series, journals and trade journals. In order to ensure high quality and standards, each and every paper is reviewed every year.
The ranking survey also included a survey of academics who were asked to rank the top universities according to them in their field of expertise. This made a substantial part in the 30% weightage given to the “academic reputation”.
In the past years, Indian universities have established a good credibility among the world audience. With the increasing no. of foreign students visiting India to pursue their higher education, India might soon become a popular destination across the globe.
