English Language Proficiency

International applicants from non-English schooling backgrounds must submit one approved test score in a single sitting. Scores must be dated from January 2024 onwards for 2026/27 Winter Session admission; the ELP submission deadline is 15 February.

TestOverall MinimumComponent Minimums
IELTS Academic6.5All four bands: 6.0 minimum each
TOEFL iBT (0 to 120 scale)90Reading 22 / Listening 22 / Writing 21 / Speaking 21
TOEFL iBT (1 to 6 scale, effective 21 Jan 2026)4.5Reading 4.5 / Listening 5 / Writing 4.5 / Speaking 4
PTE Academic65Reading 60 / Listening 60 / Writing 60 / Speaking 60
Duolingo English Test125All four skills: 115 minimum each
CAEL or CAEL Online70Not separately listed

Note: TOEFL iBT moved to a 1.0 to 6.0 band scale on 21 January 2026. UBC currently lists both the 0 to 120 requirement and the updated 1 to 6 scale shown above; both scales are reported during the 2026 to 2028 transition. Verify the current requirement on the official admissions page before applying.

  • IELTS Academic is the only IELTS format accepted; IELTS General, IELTS Indicator, and IELTS One Skill Retake are not valid for UBC undergraduate admission.
  • Indian applicants schooled in an English-medium institution for all of secondary and higher secondary may apply for an ELP waiver, subject to UBC review.
  • Prepare for a 3-month IELTS or TOEFL window; the effective 7.0-band profile of admitted engineering applicants means aiming above the stated 6.5 floor is worth the extra prep.
Honest take: Engineering Physics admits require both a strong overall Applied Science offer and top Year 1 performance in physics and calculus; Indian applicants with sub-90 PCM marks rarely place into EngPhys at the Year 2 stage even after gaining UBC admission.

UBC BASc Engineering Physics Application 2027

All first-year BASc applicants apply through a single annual round via the UBC online application portal. Engineering Physics has no direct entry at admission stage; students first accept an Applied Science offer, then select EngPhys in Year 2.

Deadlines labelled Expected are derived from the Fall 2026 cycle (application 15 January 2026; scholarship priority 1 December 2025; ELP 15 February 2026). Confirm dates at you.ubc.ca when the portal opens in October 2026.

  • The UBC application requires secondary school transcripts, English language test scores, and a Personal Profile of six short answers; no letters of recommendation are required.
  • Applications open in October each year; applying in the first two weeks is advisable because merit scholarships are assessed against the admissions offer date.
  • Indian applicants should engage WES or the UBC credential evaluator at least three months before the deadline to allow time for mark-sheet verification.
  • The Personal Profile carries meaningful weight for competitive programmes; document one science-project, leadership, or research experience in advance to draft strong answers.

Proof of funds equivalent to at least C$ 22,895 (INR 15.25 Lakhs) for living expenses, plus Year 1 tuition of C$ 66,199.66 (INR 44.10 Lakhs), is required for the subsequent study permit application; prepare these documents in parallel with the academic application.

Application tip: Apply on the day the UBC portal opens in October; 15 January is a hard cut-off with no late exceptions, and the Personal Profile draft benefits from a two-week revision cycle rather than a rushed submission near the deadline.

UBC BASc Engineering Physics Scholarships

UBC allocates over C$ 35 million annually to international undergraduate financial aid. Two automatic merit awards apply at entry; a third selective programme targets financial need. All three are assessed without a separate application beyond the admission form.

  • About one-third of Engineering Physics graduates enrol directly into masters or doctoral programmes at UBC, MIT, Stanford, and Cambridge rather than industry.
  • Take-home salary depends on federal and provincial tax rates; use Canada Revenue Agency calculators for net income estimates before making budget projections.
  • Four co-op placements over the 5-year degree accumulate roughly 16 months of paid engineering experience that lifts graduate offer quality.
ROI reality: Four co-op terms at the Applied Science median of INR 2.96 Lakhs per month recover roughly INR 47 Lakhs before graduation, offsetting almost one-quarter of the 5-year tuition and materially improving the net cost profile for Indian students.

Canada Visa for BASc Engineering Physics

International students at UBC require a Canadian Study Permit, issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is no longer available to Indian applicants; all applications now proceed through the regular stream.

  • Study permit application fee: C$ 150 (INR 9,993); biometrics fee: C$ 85 (INR 5,663).
  • Proof of funds required: at minimum C$ 22,895 (INR 15.25 Lakhs) for living expenses, plus full Year 1 tuition.
  • Most Indian applicants receive a decision within 8 to 12 weeks of biometrics submission under the regular stream.
  • A Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from British Columbia is required before filing the study permit; UBC issues the PAL after admission acceptance.
  • Graduates of UBC BASc Engineering Physics (a programme longer than 2 years) qualify for a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), valid for open-market work anywhere in Canada.
  • PGWP applicants must demonstrate English proficiency at CLB 7 (IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, or PTE Core) at the time of application.
  • Engineering Physics is on the IRCC PGWP field-of-study list under Engineering; Indian graduates retain eligibility without a program-code check.
  • One year of skilled work experience gained on a PGWP makes graduates eligible for Canada’s Express Entry Canadian Experience Class (CEC) pathway to permanent residency.
Visa reality: Apply for the study permit as soon as UBC issues the offer letter; Indian applicants processing through the regular stream should allow at least 12 weeks before the September intake, and starting biometrics early prevents delays during peak application periods.

Key insight: Applicants weighing UBC against the University of Toronto for Engineering Physics should note that UBC ranks marginally higher on QS Engineering (29 vs 30 approx) while Toronto edges Physics; the choice often comes down to co-op structure and Vancouver versus Toronto lifestyle rather than academic rank.

UBC BASc Engineering Physics fits Indian applicants who combine top PCM performance with genuine research or product-development intent, and who are prepared for a 5-year commitment with four co-op offsets. The single decision-driver that separates this degree from a conventional 4-year engineering path is depth of physics content, making it the more defensible choice for students aiming at quantum, fusion, biomedical, or aerospace R&D careers rather than mainstream software or civil engineering roles.

UBC BASc Engineering Physics FAQs

Ques. How long does the UBC BASc Engineering Physics programme take to complete?

Ans. The UBC BASc Engineering Physics programme is a 5-year full-time degree. Students complete a common first year in the Faculty of Applied Science, then four years of Engineering Physics starting Year 2. The degree includes nine academic semesters plus up to four optional co-op work terms integrated between Year 2 and Year 4.

Ques. How is Engineering Physics different from Electrical or Mechanical Engineering at UBC?

Ans. Engineering Physics is a broader, more physics-heavy degree that blends applied physics with electrical, mechanical, and software engineering rather than specialising in one discipline. It is the smallest and most selective Applied Science specialisation at UBC, admitting roughly 60 to 80 students per year. Graduates typically enter research, R&D, or advanced-technology roles at firms such as TRIUMF, D-Wave, General Fusion, Tesla, and Microsoft.

Ques. What Class 12 percentage do Indian students typically need to be competitive for UBC BASc Engineering Physics?

Ans. UBC does not publish a fixed minimum percentage for international applicants. Competitive Indian applicants typically present approximately 90 to 95 percent aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (approximately CGPA 9.0 to 9.5 on a 10-point scale). Because Engineering Physics is selected in Year 2 from top first-year performers, the effective bar is higher than for general Applied Science admission. WES or the university’s credential evaluator determines the official equivalence.

Ques. Can UBC BASc Engineering Physics graduates work in Canada after completing the degree?

Ans. Yes. Graduates of a 5-year BASc programme at a Designated Learning Institution such as UBC are eligible for a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The PGWP grants open-market work authorisation anywhere in Canada with no employer restriction. Engineering Physics falls within the IRCC field-of-study list under Engineering, keeping Indian graduates eligible without a specialised program-code check.

Ques. When do students enter the Engineering Physics stream at UBC?

Ans. Engineering Physics selection begins in Year 2. All applicants are admitted into the general BASc and complete a common first-year engineering curriculum. Placement into Engineering Physics is competitive and uses Year 1 marks in MATH 100, MATH 101, PHYS 118, and CHEM 154 alongside a short interview assessing physics aptitude, communication, and problem-solving. Direct-to-EngPhys admission at the first-year stage is not offered.
