A Canadian student visa for Indian students is officially called a study permit, issued by IRCC. The application fee is CAD 150 (INR 10,200). You must also show CAD 23,448 (INR 15.9 lakh) for first-year living costs, plus tuition. Biometrics cost CAD 85 (INR 5,800). IRCC currently decides Indian applications in about 5 weeks.

  • The study permit is the real visa document. The entry visa stamp comes with it automatically.
  • Approval now depends on file strength. Clean funds, a specific SOP, and a public DLI beat a bare offer letter.
  • Master's and PhD applicants skip the attestation letter, so their timeline is shorter than for college applicants.
  • The fast-track SDS route is gone, so every Indian applicant now competes in the same regular queue.

On the reddit, Indian applicants have reported receiving study permit decisions around 4 weeks after biometrics, although some applications may take longer. Applicants may also see few or no status updates while their application is being processed. Students should therefore apply well before their programme start date to allow enough time for processing and any additional document requests.

Canada Student Visa for Indian Students Explained

The Canada student visa is officially called a study permit, which allows Indian students to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). A DLI is a college or university approved to host international students, and the permit is issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The study permit is not a visa stamp in the passport. After approval, eligible students also receive a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) for travel to Canada, while the study permit is issued when they arrive at a Canadian port of entry.

Students generally need a study permit for courses lasting more than 6 months, while shorter courses may not require one. The acceptance letter must come from an institution listed on the official DLI list for Canada. IRCC verifies the acceptance letter with the institution during processing, so students should make sure their chosen school is a recognised DLI before applying.

What a Canada study permit gives you:

  • Full-time study at the DLI named on your letter of acceptance.
  • Off-campus work of up to 24 hours a week during term, without a separate permit.
  • Unlimited work hours during scheduled breaks such as summer.
  • A route to the post-graduation work permit (PGWP) if your program qualifies.

What a Canada study permit does not cover:

  • It is not the entry visa. The TRV comes with it but is a separate document.
  • It does not let your spouse work unless you are in an eligible master's or PhD program.
  • It does not guarantee a PGWP. That depends on your program and language score.
  • It is not permanent residence (PR) or a path that skips PR rules.

Key Insight: The Student Direct Stream (SDS), which previously offered faster processing for eligible Indian applicants, closed on November 8, 2024. Indian students now apply for a Canadian study permit through the regular application stream, so older SDS-specific requirements and guidance no longer apply.

Canada Student Visa Eligibility in 2026

You need a DLI acceptance letter, proof of funds and a clean record to qualify. You must also convince the officer that you will leave Canada when your permit expires. That last point is where most Indian refusals happen.

IRCC lists these conditions for a study permit:

  • You are enrolled at a DLI and hold a valid letter of acceptance.
  • You can pay tuition, living expenses and return travel without working in Canada.
  • You have no criminal record. A police certificate may be requested.
  • You are in good health. Indian applicants staying over 6 months need a medical exam.
  • You can show you will leave Canada at the end of your authorised stay.

Who needs a provincial attestation letter

Most diploma, certificate and bachelor’s applicants need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) or Territorial Attestation Letter (TAL) before applying for a Canada study permit. The letter confirms that the student has a place under the province or territory’s international student allocation, and the Designated Learning Institution (DLI) usually requests it after the student accepts the offer. From January 1, 2026, master’s and doctoral students at public DLIs no longer need a PAL or TAL. Kindergarten to Grade 12 students and students extending their permit at the same DLI are also exempt.

Quebec applicants need a CAQ (Quebec Acceptance Certificate) instead of a PAL or TAL. For students applying to a diploma or bachelor’s programme, getting the required PAL or TAL before submitting the study permit application is important, as availability depends on the province or territory’s allocation.

Key Insight: IRCC set 309,670 PAL application spaces for 2026 across all provinces. Ontario got 104,780 spaces for an expected 70,074 permits. Provinces can run out of PAL space before December. Apply early in the year for the best chance. Source: IRCC 2026 allocations notice.

Language score for the permit

IRCC does not set a specific language score for the study permit itself; the required admission score is decided by the DLI. Most Canadian universities ask for around IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall, depending on the programme. A language test may also be needed later for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Students should explain their study plans, career goals in India and relevant family ties clearly in their statement of purpose for a Canada study permit or letter of explanation.

Documents for a Canada Student Visa

The core documents are your passport, DLI acceptance letter, PAL or TAL, proof of funds and a letter of explanation. Everything else is conditional on your situation. Consistency across documents matters as much as the documents themselves.

Document list for Indian applicants in 2026:

Document Required? Note for Indian students
Valid passport Always Must cover your full program. A short passport shortens your permit.
Letter of acceptance (LOA) Always From a DLI. Upload only in the LOA field of the IRCC form.
PAL or TAL Most cases Not needed for master's or PhD at public DLIs from January 1, 2026.
Proof of funds Always CAD 23,448 living funds plus first-year tuition plus return travel.
Letter of explanation (SOP) Strongly recommended Explains program choice, career plan and intent to return to India.
Medical exam Conditional Needed for stays over 6 months. Use an IRCC panel physician in India.
Police certificate If requested Takes weeks in India. Start early if you have lived abroad.
Digital photo Always Must meet IRCC photo specifications.
CAQ Quebec only Replaces PAL or TAL for Quebec institutions.

The LOA upload rule trips up many applicants. IRCC checks every LOA with the school. If the school fails to confirm it by IRCC's deadline, the file is returned and the fee refunded. Ask your admissions office to confirm they will validate your letter.

Accepted proof of funds documents

IRCC accepts several document types for financial proof. You can combine them:

  • A receipt showing first-year tuition and housing paid to the DLI.
  • A guaranteed investment certificate (GIC) from a Canadian bank, the most trusted option for Indian files.
  • Bank statements for the past 6 months, with documents showing where the money came from.
  • An education loan sanction letter from a bank such as SBI, HDFC Credila or Avanse.
  • A sponsor letter from a parent, with their employment proof and bank statements.
  • A scholarship letter stating the amount and duration.
Important: IRCC officers now assess the source of funds, not just the balance. A large deposit that appears a month before filing needs a paper trail. Loan sanction letters, salary slips and property sale deeds all count as explanations.

Canada Student Visa Fees and Total Cost

Government fees total CAD 235 (INR 16,000), but the real cost is the money you must prove. IRCC charges are small. The living-funds threshold and first-year tuition are what families need to plan for. IRCC fees for a study permit application from India:

Fee item Amount (CAD) Approximate INR
Study permit processing fee CAD 150 INR 10,194
Biometrics fee (per person) CAD 85 INR 5,777
Total paid to IRCC CAD 235 INR 15,971

Both fees are paid online by card when you submit. They are not refunded if you are refused. Pay the biometrics fee at the same time as the processing fee to avoid a delay. Source: IRCC fee list.

Living funds you must show

IRCC raised the living-expense threshold on September 1, 2026. The amounts below exclude tuition and travel and apply outside Quebec:

Family members (including you) Funds required per year (CAD) Approximate INR
1 (student only) CAD 23,448 INR 15.9 lakh
2 CAD 29,192 INR 19.8 lakh
3 CAD 35,888 INR 24.4 lakh
4 CAD 43,572 INR 29.6 lakh
Quebec, single applicant (from January 1, 2026) CAD 24,617 INR 16.7 lakh

Applications filed between January 1, 2025 and August 31, 2026 were assessed at CAD 22,895. Anything filed now uses the new table. Quebec sets its own figure through the CAQ process. Source: IRCC proof of financial support guidance and Quebec MIFI.

Other costs to budget for

  • GIC processing fee: CAD 200 (INR 13,600) at Scotiabank. Other banks vary or charge nothing.
  • IELTS Academic: approximately INR 18,000 in India, based on test-centre pricing.
  • Medical exam: paid directly to the panel physician. Advisor estimates put it USD 150 to 200 (roughly INR 13,000 to 17,000).
  • VFS service charge: a small courier and handling fee per applicant at the biometrics centre.
  • Return airfare: IRCC expects you to show travel money in both directions.

A worked example helps. Take first-year tuition of CAD 18,000 (INR 12.2 lakh). Add living funds of CAD 23,448 and travel of roughly CAD 2,000. You must show approximately CAD 43,500 (INR 29.6 lakh) in total. That is before the GIC fee, tests and medical.

Key Insight: IRCC only needs proof for the first year. For longer programs you must explain how later years will be paid. A parent's employment letter or a multi-year loan sanction works. Keep a 5 to 8% buffer for rupee weakening between filing and arrival.

How to Apply for a Canada Student Visa

You apply online through an IRCC secure account, then give biometrics at a VFS Global centre in India. The whole process runs in a fixed order. Skipping a step, especially the PAL, gets the file returned. Step-by-step process for Indian students:

  1. Get admitted to a DLI. Accept the offer and pay the deposit. Receive your letter of acceptance.
  2. Request your PAL or TAL. Your DLI applies to the province. Skip this step for master's or PhD at a public DLI.
  3. Arrange proof of funds. Open a GIC, secure a loan sanction or gather 6 months of statements. Allow 5 to 10 business days for a GIC.
  4. Book your medical exam. Use an IRCC panel physician in India. Upfront medicals speed up routine files.
  5. Write your letter of explanation. Cover program fit, career plan in India and ties to home.
  6. Create an IRCC secure account. Answer the questionnaire to generate your personal document checklist.
  7. Upload documents and pay. Pay CAD 150 plus CAD 85 by card. Submit.
  8. Give biometrics. Book a VFS Global appointment within 30 days of the biometric instruction letter.
  9. Wait for the decision. Track status in your account. Respond fast to any document request.
  10. Submit your passport. After approval, send your passport to the VAC for the TRV sticker. Carry the letter of introduction to the airport.

Where to apply matters. The study permit application goes only through the IRCC secure account on canada.ca. There is no embassy interview for Indian students. The Canadian visa application centres (VACs) in India, run by VFS Global, handle biometrics and passport submission only.

Timeline for a September 2027 intake

If your intake is September 2027, then submit the permit by May 2027. That means your DLI application should go in by December 2026. Working backwards:

Stage When to do it
Apply to DLIs October to December 2026
Receive LOA and pay deposit January to March 2027
PAL or TAL issued by province 2 to 4 weeks after deposit
GIC funded and confirmed March to April 2027
Submit study permit application April to May 2027
Biometrics and medical Within 30 days of submission
Decision and passport return June to July 2027

The PAL step can be less predictable because provinces may issue attestation letters in batches. Students should avoid leaving the study permit application until the last few weeks before the intake, as delays in receiving the PAL can affect the overall timeline. Master’s applicants at eligible public DLIs can save time by not requiring a PAL or TAL under the current rules. Most Indian students target the Fall intake, while January and May can serve as alternative options. The master’s in Canada admission guide covers these intake options.

Key Note: Upload your LOA only in the LOA field. Uploading it elsewhere gives the school consent to see every document in that field. Name spellings must match exactly across passport, LOA, bank documents and the form.

Canada Student Visa Processing Time from India

IRCC’s tool showed about 5 weeks for India on September 2, 2026, after dropping by 2 weeks in a single week. Processing times can change frequently, so students should check the IRCC estimate on the day they apply. The estimate is based on a complete application being processed until a final decision, while applications waiting for additional documents may take longer. Therefore, the 5-week estimate is not a guaranteed processing time, and document requests can further delay a decision.

Realistic end-to-end timing for Indian applicants in 2026:

  • PAL or TAL: 2 to 4 weeks after you accept the offer.
  • GIC setup: 5 to 10 business days including the wire transfer.
  • Medical exam: results can take 2 to 4 weeks.
  • Biometrics: book within 30 days of the letter. Slots fill fast in May and June.
  • IRCC decision: about 5 weeks at the current estimate.
  • Passport return: about 1 week after the passport request.

Add these up and a clean file takes 8 to 14 weeks from offer acceptance to passport in hand. Peak season from May to August runs slower. Track the weekly figure through the Canada study permit processing time tracker.

What students actually say on Reddit: "Applicants from India describe approvals landing roughly 4 weeks after biometrics. Most saw only one 'ghost update' in between. Passports came back within about a week."

Key Insight: If your file passes 50% beyond the posted estimate, then you can contact IRCC through its webform. That means a 5-week estimate gives you grounds to follow up after about 8 weeks.

Why Canada Student Visas Get Refused

IRCC refused about 74% of Indian study permit applications in August 2025, compared with around 40% globally, according to Canadian immigration data provided to Reuters. The higher refusal rate came amid tighter fraud checks and stricter scrutiny of international student applications. Canadian authorities uncovered nearly 1,550 applications linked to fraudulent letters of acceptance in 2023, most of them from India, while an upgraded verification system detected more than 14,000 potentially fraudulent acceptance letters in 2024 across all applicants. Indian applications also fell sharply, from 19,175 in August 2023 to 3,920 in August 2025.

Top refusal reasons and the fix

  • Not satisfied you will leave Canada. Fix with family ties, assets and a career plan in India inside the SOP.
  • Insufficient or unexplained funds. Fix with a GIC plus 6 months of consistent statements and a sourced sponsor letter.
  • Generic SOP. Fix by naming the program, the DLI, the career role and the return plan.
  • Document mismatch. Fix by matching names, figures and dates across every upload.
  • Missing PAL. Fix by confirming with the DLI whether you need one before filing.
  • Undisclosed past refusal. Always declare. Misrepresentation brings a 5-year ban.

Since July 29, 2025, IRCC has included officer decision notes with study permit refusal letters, so applicants no longer need to make a separate request to see the reasons for refusal. For the complete application file, applicants can request GCMS notes through ATIP, which costs CAD 5 (INR 340) and may take 4–8 weeks. The full breakdown of refusal reasons and reapplication strategy is covered in the Canada student visa rejection reasons guide. IRCC also updated its guidance on July 24, 2026, highlighting more explicit source-of-funds checks for study permit applications, as explained in the IRCC tighter financial checks guide.

Key Insight: There is no waiting period after a refusal. But reapplying with the same documents brings the same result. Rebuild the SOP and the money trail before you file again.

For Indian students, getting a Canada study permit in 2026 involves stricter requirements and greater scrutiny than in previous years. At the same time, IRCC provides clear information on key requirements such as proof of funds, application fees and processing times. Students should ensure their application meets the current requirements, clearly explains their source of funds and presents a genuine study plan. The SDS route is no longer available, so applications must follow the current regular study permit process.

FAQs

Ques. How much does a Canada student visa cost for Indian students in 2026?

Ans. The IRCC fee is CAD 150 (INR 10,200) plus CAD 85 for biometrics. Together that is about INR 16,000. Add the GIC processing fee, IELTS and the medical exam. The bigger sum is the CAD 23,448 you must prove for living costs.

Ques. What is the minimum bank balance for a Canada student visa in 2026?

Ans. IRCC sets no single balance. You must show CAD 23,448 (INR 15.9 lakh) for living costs, plus first-year tuition, plus return travel. The living figure applies to applications filed on or after September 1, 2026. Quebec asks for CAD 24,617.

Ques. Is IELTS mandatory for a Canada student visa?

Ans. No, not for the permit itself. IRCC does not set a language score. Your DLI sets the admission score, usually IELTS 6.0 to 6.5. You will need a test later for the PGWP, so take it anyway.

Ques. How long does a Canada student visa take from India?

Ans. About 5 weeks, based on IRCC's September 2, 2026 update. That counts only IRCC processing. Add 2 to 4 weeks for the PAL and a week for passport return. A clean file takes 8 to 14 weeks from offer to passport.

Ques. Do I need a PAL for a master's in Canada in 2026?

Ans. No. From January 1, 2026, master's and doctoral students at public DLIs are exempt from the PAL or TAL. Diploma, certificate and bachelor's applicants still need one. Quebec students need a CAQ instead.

Ques. Is SDS still available for Indian students?

Ans. No. IRCC closed the Student Direct Stream on November 8, 2024. All Indian applicants now use the regular study permit stream. A GIC is no longer compulsory but remains the strongest proof of funds.

Ques. Is a GIC compulsory for a Canada student visa?

Ans. No. IRCC lists a GIC as one of several accepted proofs. Bank statements, loan letters and sponsor letters also work. Officers trust a GIC because the money already sits in a Canadian bank. Expect a processing fee of CAD 200.

Ques. Can I work on a Canada student visa?

Ans. Yes. You can work 24 hours a week off campus during term and unlimited hours in scheduled breaks. On-campus work has no cap. Since April 1, 2026, required co-op placements need no separate permit.
