The University of British Columbia Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Statistics is a 4-year, full-time, on-campus BSc combined major at UBC’s Point Grey campus in Vancouver. Class XII students with 85% to 90% aggregate (CGPA approximately 8.5 to 9.0 on 10) and Mathematics with Calculus qualify; tuition runs CAD 212,328 (INR 1.47 Crore) over four years for the September intake.

The combined major trains graduates to build machine-learning systems backed by statistical rigour, sharing core courses with both Computer Science Honours and Statistics Honours streams. Indian students who like algorithms and inference equally, and who target quant or data-science roles, are the ideal applicants.

  • Joint degree co-administered by UBC’s Department of Computer Science and Department of Statistics with no extra credits beyond the standard 120-credit BSc load
  • The new AI Option launched in 2026 and a Software Engineering Option allow further specialisation within the combined major
  • Science Co-op terms pay CAD 18,000 to CAD 22,000 (INR 12.42 Lakhs to INR 15.18 Lakhs) per 4-month placement at Microsoft Vancouver, Amazon, Shopify, or RBC Capital Markets

Current Admission Status

Applications for the September 2027 intake are Not Yet Open. International student deadline: 15 January 2027.

Applications open on 15 September 2026 through UBC’s central admissions portal. Indian applicants targeting major scholarships should aim for the 1 December 2026 scholarship-round deadline rather than the regular January cut-off.

The University of British Columbia BSc Computer Science and Statistics Admission 2027

UBC’s Faculty of Science admits the Combined Major in Computer Science and Statistics through the general first-year Science intake. Indian applicants declare the combined major at the end of Year 1 after clearing CPSC 110, MATH 100, and STAT 200 with strong grades.

The September 2027 cycle is the next live application window, with a single September intake; there is no January or May start for this combined major.

Academic Eligibility for Indian Applicants

WES (World Education Services) or UBC’s own credential evaluation sets the official equivalence between Indian percentages and the Canadian 4.33 GPA scale. UBC reads the Class XII Mathematics grade more strictly than the aggregate for this combined major.

UBC’s overall position at QS World 40 and Computer Science at QS 27 reflects the academic depth Indian applicants are admitted into.

English Language Proficiency Tests Accepted

UBC accepts five English-proficiency tests for the BSc Combined Major in Computer Science and Statistics. The thresholds below apply to all international undergraduate applicants for the September 2027 intake.

TestMinimum OverallPer-component Minimum
IELTS Academic6.56.0 in each band
TOEFL iBT9020 in each section
Duolingo English Test125Not specified
CAEL70Not specified
PTE Academic65Not specified

Note: TOEFL iBT moved to a 1.0 to 6.0 band scale on 21 January 2026. UBC currently lists the 0 to 120 requirement shown above; both scales are reported during the 2026 to 2028 transition. Verify the current requirement on the official admissions page before applying.

  • Most Indian applicants clear IELTS 6.5 inside one to two months of preparation; 7.0 raises the scholarship odds materially
  • The IELTS 6.0 per-band rule trips up applicants weak on Writing Task 2; budget extra preparation time for the essay section
  • Students from English-medium Indian schools may submit a school principal letter to request a test waiver in limited cases
  • Re-taking IELTS for a 0.5 band gain costs less than INR 16,000 and is cheaper than delaying the application by a full year
Tip for Indian students: UBC reads the Class XII Math grade harder than the aggregate for this combined major; a 95% in Mathematics with 87% aggregate beats 92% in Math with 92% aggregate.

The University of British Columbia BSc Computer Science and Statistics Application 2027

Indian applicants apply through UBC’s Online Undergraduate Admissions portal for the Combined Major in Computer Science and Statistics. The Faculty of Science admits to first year only; the combined major is declared after Year 1 prerequisites are complete.

The Personal Profile, a structured short-answer essay set within the application, is where dual interest in algorithms and inference must be visible.

Application Strategy for Indian Applicants

The single most decisive lever is the Personal Profile. UBC weights it heavily for Combined Major candidates because the joint structure rewards demonstrated breadth across both fields.

  • Lead one Personal Profile prompt with a quantifiable project that mixes code and statistical inference, not two separate examples
  • Apply by the 1 December 2026 scholarship round to enter the International Major Entrance Scholarship pool automatically
  • Submit the Class XII pre-board results if final results are not yet declared; UBC accepts predicted grades for early review
  • Verify the supporting documents deadline annually because UBC sometimes shifts it by two weeks
Application tip: The Personal Profile carries real weight at UBC for this combined major; a single quantifiable hackathon plus one math-olympiad mention beats two CS-only references because it signals dual fluency.

The University of British Columbia BSc Computer Science and Statistics Scholarships

UBC offers automatic-consideration entrance awards and competitive nominated scholarships for Indian students entering the BSc Combined Major in Computer Science and Statistics. Most awards are administered at the Faculty of Science level, not at the combined-major level.

  • The Major Entrance and Outstanding International Student awards need no separate application; UBC automatically considers all admitted international applicants
  • The Karen McKellin Leader of Tomorrow Award requires a school-counsellor nomination by 15 November 2026 and demonstrated leadership beyond academics
  • Indian applicants must submit the UBC application by 1 December 2026 to enter the scholarship-round consideration pool
  • Year 2 in-course awards specifically target Combined Major students who maintain an 85% average through the first year of Science

Scholarship reality: The full-tuition International Scholars Program awards fewer than 100 seats worldwide each year, and Indian applicants typically need Class XII above 95% plus a documented leadership story to compete.

The University of British Columbia BSc Computer Science and Statistics Salary 2027

Combined Major graduates command software engineering, data science, and quantitative analyst salaries because the dual training in algorithms and inference lands strongly at fintech and ML-heavy employers. UBC’s Faculty of Science reports a 90% placement rate within 3 months of graduation for Computer Science and Statistics streams.

The dual transcript designation lets graduates apply to both Software Engineer (NOC 2174) and Statistician (NOC 2161) job postings under Canadian classification codes.

  • Microsoft Vancouver, Amazon, Shopify, EA Vancouver, and Lululemon Data Science recruit Combined Major students directly from Science Co-op terms
  • Banking and fintech hires through RBC Capital Markets, TD Securities, BMO Capital Markets, and Wealthsimple lean on the Statistics half of the degree
  • NOC 2174 (Computer and Information Systems Professionals) qualifies graduates for Canada’s Express Entry skilled-worker pathway after 12 months of work
  • Take-home pay sits around 55% to 65% of gross after federal tax, BC provincial tax, CPP, and EI deductions

Check Out: UBC Vancouver Placements Report

ROI reality: A graduate starting at CAD 85,000 (INR 58.65 Lakhs) recovers four-year tuition inside three years on take-home pay alone, before any sign-on bonus or restricted stock from large-tech employers.

Canada Visa BSc Computer Science and Statistics

Indian students need a Canadian Study Permit before joining UBC; the financial-proof requirement is CAD 75,000 (INR 51 Lakhs) plus first-year tuition. Apply at least 12 weeks before the September start to clear biometrics and document checks.

  • Study permit application fee is CAD 150 (INR 10,350); IRCC also requires a Guaranteed Investment Certificate of CAD 20,000 (INR 13.80 Lakhs) for the first year of living expenses
  • The PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit) allows up to 3 years of open work after graduation, with no employer sponsorship and no language test required for issuance
  • Express Entry under NOC 2174 (Computer Science Professionals) opens the Federal Skilled Worker pathway after 12 months of skilled Canadian work experience post-graduation
  • Permanent Resident status is reachable within 3 years of starting work; spouses can apply for a Spousal Open Work Permit while the student is enrolled

Visa reality: UBC’s strong India intake means consulates approve a high share of UBC study-permit applications; thin financial proof and a weak Statement of Purpose remain the two main rejection reasons.

The University of British Columbia BSc Computer Science and Statistics Ranking 2026

UBC ranks in the global top 50 for both halves of the combined major: Computer Science at QS 27 and Mathematics (which houses Statistics) at QS 40. The UBC Vancouver profile places it in the small cohort of universities ranked top-50 in both fields, drawing on faculty and curriculum from both top-ranked departments.

QS Mathematics 2026 (covers Statistics)4034

Source: QS World University Rankings 2026.

  • UBC sits second in Canada for Computer Science behind the University of Toronto and ahead of McGill and Waterloo in the QS 2026 cycle
  • The 7-place jump in QS overall (47 to 40) reflects sustained research output gains across Computer Science and Statistics
  • The Mathematics subject ranking dropped from 34 to 40 in 2026 but remains comfortably within the global top 50
  • No QS subject ranking exists for the Combined Major specifically; the figures above apply to the parent departments
Honest take: Indian applicants choosing between UBC, Waterloo, and Toronto for CS plus Statistics typically pick UBC for the joint major’s structural integration; Waterloo wins on Co-op scale, Toronto wins on AI research depth.

The UBC BSc Computer Science and Statistics suits Indian students who want a single 120-credit degree that opens both software-engineering and data-science career tracks, without the compressed schedule of a full double major. Four years at INR 1.47 Crore tuition is steep, but the 90% placement rate and CAD 75,000-plus starting salaries restore the math within three years on take-home pay. The deciding question is dual interest, because the joint structure rewards students who genuinely want to write code AND reason about probability, not those who tolerate one to get the other.

UBC BSc Computer Science and Statistics FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between UBC BSc Computer Science and Statistics combined major and a standalone BSc Computer Science at UBC?

Ans. The combined major requires both CPSC core (CPSC 110, 121, 210, 221, 304, 310) and STAT core (STAT 200, 302, 305, 306, 406), trading 12 to 15 CS elective credits for statistics depth. Graduates receive a single 120-credit BSc with both majors listed on the transcript.

Ques. Can Indian applicants declare the Combined Major in Computer Science and Statistics directly in the Year 1 application?

Ans. No, all Faculty of Science applicants enter undeclared and complete first-year prerequisites; the Combined Major is declared at the end of Year 1 with a minimum B grade in CPSC 110, MATH 100, and STAT 200.

Ques. Is the Combined Major in Computer Science and Statistics eligible for UBC Science Co-op placements?

Ans. Yes, students apply to Science Co-op in second year; Combined Major students compete strongly for data science and quantitative analyst placements at Microsoft Vancouver, Amazon, Shopify, RBC Capital Markets, and Lululemon Data Science.

Ques. What Class XII Mathematics score do Indian applicants need for this UBC combined major?

Ans. A Class XII Mathematics score above 90% with Calculus or strong Pre-Calculus content is the safe target; scores below 85% in Math typically force a pre-calculus catch-up sequence (MATH 110) in first year.

Ques. Does the new UBC AI Option apply to the Combined Major in Computer Science and Statistics?

Ans. The 2026-launched AI Option is structured for the standalone Computer Science major; Combined Major students cannot stack it but can take the same underlying AI courses (CPSC 422, 425, 440) as electives within their 120-credit programme.
