SGPGIMS PhD FAQs
Ques. Can a DM graduate apply for SGPGIMS PhD without sitting the written entrance test?
Ans. A DM graduate can bypass the written test only if they hold a valid CSIR, UGC, ICMR, DBT, or DST JRF at the time of application. Without an external fellowship, even DM holders must appear in the SGPGIMS aptitude test. The fellowship exemption is about funding status, not clinical qualification. DM holders typically perform well in the personal interview regardless of the route they follow, given their research exposure during clinical training.
Ques. How does SGPGIMS PhD in Medical Genetics compare with research positions at NCBS or CCMB?
Ans. SGPGIMS PhD in Medical Genetics is built around clinical genetics including chromosomal disorders, prenatal diagnosis, and rare genetic disease clinics. NCBS and CCMB focus on molecular biology and evolutionary genetics in laboratory settings. If your interest is translational disease genetics tied to patient cases, SGPGIMS provides access that pure science institutes do not. If your goal is basic molecular genomics, NCBS and CCMB offer better international collaboration networks and core lab infrastructure.
Ques. What happens if an SGPGIMS PhD scholar cannot complete the thesis within 3 years?
Ans. SGPGIMS allows up to five years for thesis submission from the date of registration. Scholars who need beyond three years must arrange continued funding since the institute does not extend stipend automatically. The thesis can be submitted between three and five years once the supervisor certifies readiness. Registration lapses after five years without academic board approval for extension. Extensions are reviewed individually and are not guaranteed.
Ques. Is the SGPGIMS part-time PhD open to all candidates or only to institute staff?
Ans. The part-time PhD launched at SGPGIMS in 2022 is available to faculty members and researchers already working at the institute or in extramural projects hosted at SGPGIMS. It is not open to external candidates without an institutional affiliation. The supervisor certifies that the candidate’s primary work will not be affected. The degree awarded is identical to the full-time PhD in title and recognition. Programme duration extends beyond three years and progresses through individual thesis committee milestones.
Ques. Can a candidate with an MD from a private medical college apply for SGPGIMS PhD?
Ans. Yes. Eligibility is based on the degree, subject, and aggregate marks rather than institution type. An MD from any NMC-recognized private medical college with the required 55% aggregate in MBBS and MD is fully eligible. Selection is based on aptitude test performance and personal interview merit equally for all applicants. Holding an external JRF from CSIR, UGC, or ICMR removes the written test requirement entirely and opens a direct interview pathway regardless of where the MD was completed.
