SKIMS Admission Process

MBBS Admission

MBBS admission at SKIMS is entirely NEET UG-driven. There is no separate institutional test. Seats are divided between the State Quota (filled by JKBOPEE) and the All-India Quota (filled by MCC). Candidates domiciled in J&K are eligible for both pools.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology with a minimum of 50% marks (45% for reserved categories)
  • Age: 17 years minimum at the time of admission, as per NMC guidelines
  • NEET UG qualifying percentile: 50th percentile for General category (40th for reserved)
  • State quota process: JKBOPEE releases category-wise merit lists, conducts online choice filling, and releases allotment letters
  • AIQ: 15% seats filled by MCC through the centralized counselling portal

MD / MS Admission

Postgraduate (MD and MS) admissions are based on NEET PG scores. State quota seats at SKIMS are counselled by JKBOPEE. Candidates require a valid MBBS degree with a completed rotating internship. NEET PG cut-off at SKIMS for popular clinical disciplines such as General Medicine, Paediatrics, and Radiodiagnosis has historically remained competitive given the institute’s clinical infrastructure and super-specialty exposure.

DM / M.Ch Admission

Super-specialty (DM and M.Ch) seats are filled entirely through MCC via the NEET SS examination. SKIMS offers DM in Cardiology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, and Medical Oncology, and M.Ch in Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Paediatric Surgery, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Eligibility requires an MD or MS in the relevant parent specialty and a valid NEET SS score.

B.Sc Allied Health and Nursing Programmes

B.Sc Nursing admissions are NEET UG-based, per INC guidelines. B.Sc Allied Health programmes in Medical Laboratory Technology, Radiology, Anaesthesia and Operation Theatre Technology, Perfusion Technology, and Radiation Technology admit candidates based on merit in 10+2 PCB. Applications are typically invited directly by SKIMS with notifications on the official website.

SKIMS Placements and Career Outcomes

SKIMS does not hold conventional campus placement drives. Career outcomes for MBBS graduates from SKIMS are shaped by NEET PG scores for postgraduate residency, J&K government health service positions, and independent clinical practice. The institute’s reputation as the premier tertiary referral centre in the Kashmir Valley gives its MBBS graduates strong clinical exposure and competitive profiles for NEET PG.

The table below outlines the primary career pathways and indicative compensation at each stage for SKIMS MBBS graduates.

Career StageTypical CompensationNotes
MBBS Internship (Rotating)INR 15,000 to 20,000 per month (stipend)Mandatory 1-year internship at SKIMS hospital
J&K Government Health ServiceINR 56,100 per month starting (Level 10 pay matrix)Governed by J&K Pay Scales for Medical Officers

Note: MBBS graduates from J&K government medical institutions may be subject to a mandatory rural or government service bond obligation as stipulated by J&K government policy. Candidates should confirm the current bond terms directly with the J&K Health and Medical Education Department before admission.

SKIMS Campus and Infrastructure

SKIMS, Srinagar occupies a campus of approximately 125 acres in the Soura area of Srinagar. The 1,015-bed main hospital serves as a tertiary referral centre for the Kashmir Valley and beyond. Clinical departments span internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics, orthopaedics, oncology, cardiology, neurology, neurosurgery, urology, and transplant surgery, among others.

The campus houses the State Cancer Institute, a dedicated maternity hospital, and the Mader-e-Meharban Institute of Nursing Science (nursing college). The paramedical college conducts B.Sc and M.Sc programmes across multiple allied health disciplines. SKIMS Medical College, Bemina, established in 1989, functions as a second campus and contributes to the combined 150-seat MBBS intake.

The institute has demonstrated capacity for complex clinical procedures. In November 2025, SKIMS surgeons completed an 11-hour neurosurgical procedure to remove a rare holocord intramedullary spinal cord tumour, described as among the most complex spinal surgeries performed in the region. The institute’s research output spans clinical trials, immunology, molecular medicine, and pharmacology through its Ph.D. and M.Sc research programmes.

SKIMS vs GMC Srinagar vs GMC Jammu

NEET UG aspirants from Jammu and Kashmir routinely compare SKIMS, Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, and Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu when shortlisting government medical seats in the union territory. All three are NMC-recognised government institutions. The comparison below covers key decision parameters.

The academic session for the B.Sc. Nursing program at Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar, is scheduled to commence on October 6, 2025. This date aligns with the start of classes for the new first-year MBBS batch of 2025-26, as announced by SKIMS. As the B.Sc.
