KAPV B.Optom FAQs
Ques. What is the B.Optom course and how is it different from MBBS Ophthalmology?
Ans. B.Optom (Bachelor of Optometry) is a four-year undergraduate programme training students in primary eye care, vision correction, and optical equipment use. Optometrists perform refraction tests, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, screen for common eye diseases like glaucoma, cataract, and diabetic retinopathy, and assist ophthalmologists. MBBS followed by MS Ophthalmology trains a medical doctor who performs eye surgery and prescribes medication. Optometrists do not prescribe drugs or perform surgery but play a critical role in preventive eye care. Demand for trained optometrists is high given India's large burden of uncorrected refractive errors.
Ques. How many seats are available and who is eligible for B.Optom at KAPV?
Ans. KAPV offers 20 government-quota seats for B.Optom. All seats are in the government quota; there are no management or NRI seats. Eligibility: Class 12 pass with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology; minimum age 17 years; Tamil Nadu native with a valid Nativity Certificate. Admission is merit-based on Class 12 marks via TN DME counselling. No entrance exam is required.
Ques. What clinical training do B.Optom students get at KAPV?
Ans. B.Optom students at KAPV receive clinical training in the ophthalmology department of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH), a high-volume government teaching hospital. Practical training includes refraction, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, fundoscopy, visual field testing, and contact lens fitting. Students assist in outpatient eye clinics and eye camps. The high patient load at a government hospital gives students exposure to a wide range of conditions that private college students may not encounter.
Ques. What career options are available after B.Optom from KAPV?
Ans. Graduates can work as optometrists in government hospitals, private eye hospitals, optical retail chains, and vision centres. TNPSC recruits optometrists for Tamil Nadu government health services. Many graduates join corporate eye care chains like Sankara Nethralaya, Aravind Eye Hospital, or Vasan Eye Care. A few pursue M.Optom or MBA in Hospital Management for senior roles. Optometry practice registration allows independent private practice in Tamil Nadu after completing the degree.
Ques. What is the total fee for B.Optom at KAPV Trichy?
Ans. The total tuition fee for the four-year B.Optom government-quota programme at KAPV is ₹12,000 (₹3,000 per year). This is the state-notified rate for all Tamil Nadu government allied health courses. Hostel accommodation is optional at ₹24,000 per year. Scholarships from BC/MBC/SC/ST welfare departments and central schemes via the National Scholarship Portal are available for eligible students.
