CIET Ph.D. (Engineering and Technology) FAQs
Ques. Is the PhD at Chitkara University full-time only, or can working professionals also apply?
Ans. Chitkara University offers both full-time and part-time PhD modes in Engineering and Technology. The full-time program requires regular on-campus presence, while the part-time mode is designed for working professionals who can balance their job with research commitments. Part-time scholars are expected to attend periodic campus sessions, RAC meetings, and seminars, but the schedule is flexible enough to accommodate professional responsibilities. Both modes lead to the same doctoral degree and follow the same UGC-mandated standards.
Ques. If I have a valid GATE score, do I still need to appear for any test at Chitkara University?
Ans. Yes, partially. Candidates with a valid GATE, UGC-NET, or CSIR-NET score are exempted from the university's written entrance test. However, the personal interview is mandatory for all applicants regardless of their national exam scores. The interview assesses your research proposal, area of interest, and alignment with available faculty supervisors. So while you save the written test step, you must still clear the interview to secure admission.
Ques. What is the actual timeline to complete the PhD, and what happens if I take longer than 3 years?
Ans. The minimum duration for the PhD at Chitkara University is 3 years, and the maximum is 6 years as per UGC guidelines. The program is structured with defined milestones: coursework, doctoral seminar, research proposal seminar, three progress review seminars, pre-thesis submission, and final thesis submission and defence. If a scholar does not complete within 3 years, they can continue up to 6 years with RAC approval. Extensions beyond 6 years are generally not permitted under UGC norms without special dispensation.
Ques. Are the fees paid all at once, or are they spread across the program duration?
Ans. The total fee of Rs. 4,20,000 is not paid in a lump sum. It is structured milestone-wise, meaning each fee component is paid when the corresponding stage of the program is reached. For example, the enrolment fee is paid at the time of joining, course work fees are paid when each course work module is undertaken, and the thesis submission and defence fee is paid at the final stage. This milestone-based payment structure makes the financial commitment more manageable over the 3 to 6 year duration.
Ques. What specialisations are available under the PhD in Engineering and Technology at CIET, and how do I choose one?
Ans. The PhD in Engineering and Technology at Chitkara University covers five main specialisations: Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering. The choice of specialisation is guided by your academic background, research interests, and the availability of a suitable faculty supervisor in that domain. During the application process, you are required to submit a research proposal or statement of purpose that outlines your intended area of research, which helps the admissions committee match you with an appropriate supervisor.
Ques. Does Chitkara University provide any financial support or stipend to PhD scholars directly?
Ans. Chitkara University does not provide a stipend or assistantship directly to PhD scholars. However, scholars who hold external fellowships such as UGC-NET JRF (Rs. 37,000/month for the first two years, Rs. 42,000/month thereafter) or CSIR-NET JRF can continue to receive those benefits while enrolled. The university also supports scholars in applying for project-based funding from government agencies. For those without fellowships, education loans are available through banks, and the university provides the necessary documentation to facilitate the loan process.
