GSS Ph.D. CS FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between the Ph.D. in Computer Science (Science faculty) and Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering (Engineering faculty) at GITAM?
Ans. GITAM offers Ph.D. in Computer Science under two different faculties. The Science faculty Ph.D. in Computer Science is offered only at the Visakhapatnam campus and is suited for candidates with MCA, M.Sc. Computer Science, or M.Sc. Data Science backgrounds. The Engineering faculty Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering is available at all three campuses (Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Bengaluru) and is more suited for B.Tech./M.Tech. graduates. Applicants should choose the appropriate discipline based on their academic background at the time of application.
Ques. Can an MCA graduate apply for the Ph.D. in Computer Science at GITAM School of Science?
Ans. Yes, MCA graduates are explicitly eligible for the Ph.D. in Computer Science under the Science faculty at GITAM, provided they have a minimum of 55% aggregate marks. This is one of the few PhD programmes in India where MCA graduates are directly eligible without needing an M.Tech. degree. Candidates with M.Sc. in Information Sciences, Computer Science, or Data Science are also eligible.
Ques. What is the GITAM PhD Fellowship and is it available for Computer Science scholars?
Ans. The GITAM PhD Fellowship offers Rs. 33,000 per month for a maximum of three years to full-time on-campus Ph.D. scholars across all disciplines, including Computer Science. However, the fellowship is not automatically guaranteed to every admitted scholar and is subject to availability and university norms. Candidates who already hold a UGC-JRF fellowship will continue on their external fellowship and may be transitioned to the GITAM fellowship after its completion. Scholars should confirm fellowship terms at the time of receiving the offer letter.
Ques. Is UGC-NET in Computer Science and Applications accepted for exemption from GReAT at GITAM?
Ans. Yes, a valid UGC-NET score in Computer Science and Applications is accepted for exemption from the GReAT written test at GITAM. Candidates with such a score are directly called for the in-person interview at the GITAM Visakhapatnam campus. Similarly, a valid GATE score in Computer Science (CS) or Information Technology (IT) is also accepted. Candidates should ensure their qualifying exam score is valid at the time of application.
Ques. What research areas are typically available for Ph.D. in Computer Science at GITAM Visakhapatnam?
Ans. The Computer Science faculty at GITAM Visakhapatnam typically works in areas such as machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, computer vision, data mining, big data analytics, cloud computing, cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoT), and distributed computing. Prospective students are advised to identify a potential supervisor and research area before applying, as admission is subject to supervisor availability. Contact the department at phdsupport@gitam.edu for faculty profiles and current research projects.
Ques. What is the GReAT exam pattern for Computer Science applicants at GITAM?
Ans. The GReAT exam for Computer Science applicants consists of two sections: Section A covers Research Aptitude and Methodology (80 marks, common for all disciplines), and Section B covers the Computer Science subject area (80 marks). The syllabus for Section B can be downloaded from the GITAM PhD programme page at www.gitam.edu/research/research-innovations/about/phd-programme. The exam is objective-type, conducted in-person at the GITAM Visakhapatnam campus, and has a duration of two hours. Candidates who clear the GReAT are then called for an in-person interview.
