GSS PhD-ES FAQs
Ques. Is the Ph.D. in Environmental Science at GITAM available at all campuses or only Visakhapatnam?
Ans. The Ph.D. in Life Sciences (Environmental Science) is offered exclusively at the Visakhapatnam campus of GITAM. It is not available at the Hyderabad or Bengaluru campuses. Students who wish to pursue this programme must be prepared to relocate to or reside in Visakhapatnam for the minimum 3-year duration of the research programme. Candidates should confirm campus-specific seat availability at the time of application.
Ques. Can a candidate with an M.Tech. in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering apply for this Ph.D.?
Ans. Yes, the eligibility criteria for Ph.D. in Life Sciences (Environmental Science) at GITAM explicitly includes M.Tech. in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering, with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks. Similarly, B.E./B.Tech. graduates in Chemical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering with a 4-year degree and at least 75% marks are also eligible. This makes the programme accessible to both science and engineering graduates with an interest in environmental research.
Ques. What is the GITAM PhD Fellowship and is it available for Environmental Science scholars?
Ans. The GITAM PhD Fellowship offers Rs. 33,000 per month for a maximum of three years to full-time on-campus Ph.D. scholars across all disciplines, including Environmental Science. However, the fellowship is not automatically guaranteed to every admitted scholar and is subject to availability and university norms. Candidates who already hold a CSIR-JRF or UGC-JRF fellowship will continue on their external fellowship and may be transitioned to the GITAM fellowship after its completion. Scholars should confirm fellowship terms at the time of receiving the offer letter.
Ques. Which CSIR-NET subject is relevant for Ph.D. in Environmental Science admission at GITAM?
Ans. For Ph.D. in Environmental Science, the relevant CSIR-NET subject is Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences. Candidates with a valid score in this subject are exempted from the GReAT written test and directly called for an interview. UGC-NET in Environmental Sciences is also accepted. Candidates should note that CSIR-NET is conducted twice a year (June and December sessions) and the score must be valid at the time of application to GITAM.
Ques. What research areas are typically available for Ph.D. in Environmental Science at GITAM Visakhapatnam?
Ans. The Environmental Science faculty at GITAM Visakhapatnam typically works in areas such as air and water pollution monitoring and remediation, heavy metal contamination, solid waste management, climate change impacts, coastal and marine ecology, environmental biotechnology, phytoremediation, and environmental impact assessment. Prospective students are advised to identify a potential supervisor and research area before applying, as admission is subject to supervisor availability. Contact the department at phdsupport@gitam.edu for faculty profiles and current research projects.
Ques. Is a B.Sc. graduate in any science subject eligible to apply for Ph.D. in Environmental Science at GITAM?
Ans. A regular 3-year B.Sc. graduate is not directly eligible. However, candidates with a 4-year B.Sc. degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, or any Science discipline with a minimum of 75% marks are eligible. For PG candidates, any M.Sc. degree in Science (not just Environmental Science) with 55% marks qualifies. So an M.Sc. in Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, or any branch of science makes a candidate eligible, which is a significant advantage for students from diverse science backgrounds who wish to transition into environmental research.
